Transfer Portal - Who Goes Shopping?

I would have to think Sargent and Toren Young both know that they will never make it to the NFL. So it's just the college experience for them. So to jump in the transfer portal to start over at another school for one year doesn't seem like a good move. It's not like they have 2 or 3 years left.

If I were Toren Young and Mekhi Sargent I would take a moment to sit down and review Iowa's RB usage over the last 5 seasons. For that time Iowa has successfully used 2 or 3 backs effectively rather than having one feature back getting 25 carries a game. Yes Goodson is a stud and has passed them on the depth chart but Young and Sargent should still get 15 carries a game between them depending on the game and what individual situations dictate. And as we know all too well, AIRBHG can rear his ugly head at any time. Young and Sargent should stay for the above reasons and as someone else mentioned, their NFL prospects are nill. Unless you're going to a MAC school for more playing time what are you truly gaining from leaving a Big Ten program like Iowa?

It makes me wonder how do the coaches handle it too. That position is big time stocked right now with bodies. With IKM, Byrd, Sargent, Young, Goodson all returning with 2 more true freshman coming in. Might the coaches 'encourage' any of them to look around? I think that goes on too. Coaches like to even out the schollys too and having 3 of them for upper classman with little chance of playing much... If there isn't any movement before/after the bowl game I bet when the 2 new freshman come in and they see how they measure up we won't have 7 scholarship RBs going into next season one way or another.

Merriweather should look elsewhere if he ever wants to see the field. KF has found his love story white walk on to play safety for the next 2 years. No matter how bad he is, Koerner will never, ever lose that spot. I thought players didn't lose their position because of injury, but apparently there are exceptions to that. Anyone that plays behind Doyle's kid might want to look elsewhere, as he will start the next 3 years no matter how bad he is as well.

Yeah I hope Jacobs doesn't go... I was kinda bumbed when McDonald left but then wasn't because we still had Jacobs. To me Jacobs is the most physically athletic LB on the roster. I'm glad he redshirted and got to get Doyalized some and learn. That dude from his tape just has a nack for getting to the ball carrier. And he seems tough to block with his speed and athleticism. I really really hope the coaches let him know how much he's needed and have a role for him to have.

for the life of me, i cannot figure out why jacobs didn't see one single play, let alone, his 4 games he could have played in. that's just a head scratcher that only comes with this program.

I thought he was injured early in preseason pract8ce.

It will definitely be interesting to see how the portal affects Iowa, both in who leaves and who might come in from elsewhere. With the inconsistency of the NCAA rulings on immediate eligibility, it's still a crap shoot, especially for guys who have already burned their redshirt.

I have to believe we lose a RB, or maybe even two RBs. I don't think any WRs who saw field time this year are candidates, but the guys who redshirted or saw no time, who knows?

Frankly, Nixon worries me a little. His name didn't seem to be as prominent the last several games. And he is, IMO, a guy we REALLY need for the next couple seasons.

The DB crew always seems to lose a guy or two each season. Most seem to end up at MAC or FCS schools, some to JuCo, and a couple who (apparently) drop off completely.

Frankly, it seems our bigger worry, these days, are the ones who declare early for the draft.

I don't know why Nixon would want to leave now. A starting position is just sitting there for him to take.

I think he got nicked up early on in camp perhaps. Then just once you get behind a few guys that were in and playing it'd have taken more injuries above him for him to see the field. I'm totally OK with having redshirted him. I'm just hoping we have a plan going forward for him to play. I don't want him to even think about the transfer portal

He came in undersized (weighed only 198 at the army all American game in January), and battled some injuries. He was also behind two guys that have a good deal of experience. Seth Wallace said he was starting to emerge and look better in practice. Iowa had a very good defense this year. This isn’t some conspiracy like you are trying to make it out to be, sometimes guys just aren’t ready despite being highly ranked out of high school.

That's true he wasn't the biggest guy either and needed Doyalizing. If he can get to 225ish and maintain his speed look out. And yeah there's absolutely nothing wrong with not being ready day 1/year 1. If you can get a kid to start/play a lot 2 solid years you've done well. 3 is usually gravy and 4 is pretty rare.

I did read that guys who enroll early cannot play in the bowl game and maintain a redshirt, even if they are under the four games. Meaning Jacobs can’t play in the bowl game.

how do you know what i'm thinking? did i say it was a conspiracy? that is a complete moronic statement from you. there is no law that says WHICH 4 games. and are you trying to tell me that you can't get the kid a series or two here or there? i call b.s. to that notion. and, there has been zero report that any injury he may have been fighting would keep him from playing. so..coaches decision. zero game action. zero game film for him to review during the offseason. zero game experience for him to review in his mind.

but, when your offensive output sucks and you can't attain any leads that are safe, yeah, i can see a situation where you don't play the kid. at least i'm being honest about the situation. our offense sucked and that prevented any leeway in allowing any kid to see the field. how about that, nike?

I didn't realize that. Interesting. I'm not a fan of that at all. Wonder what the 'logic' behind that is.

You say “for the life of me I can’t figure why he didn’t see on single play.” We’ve gotten into this same discussion before.

Here is what Seth Wallace had to say before the Purdue game. See the needs more muscle quote.

“And then there’s true freshman Jestin Jacobs, perhaps the crown jewel of Iowa’s 2019 recruiting class after the Hawkeyes fought off Ohio State down the stretch. Jacobs (6-4, 220) has been a part of Iowa’s travel roster and impressed coaches. Wallace said Jacobs’ fast development is similar to Campbell’s, but he probably needs to add muscle.

“When I say close, he’s probably not on the fringe,” Wallace said, “but he might be a sand wedge away.””

So there you have it. His position coach said he’s not there yet and needs to add more muscle. That’s why he didn’t play.
