Tracking 2012 Class Offers

Simeon QB/ATH Robert Gregory (no Iowa offer yet) received an Arkansas offer today.

I think iowa needs to take a shot on him. He's athletic, he could be a Brad Banks type, but if not take the Clinton Solomon route (I don't hink we'll see another McNutt switch). That could only help with Diamond.

Ferentz is honest. He won't lead a kid on, and say he thinks he can play QB here if he doesn't. The easy way out would be to offer him and QB with the intention of moving him, but that's not KF's style. He'll offer him at QB only if he thinks the kid has a good shot at staying there. The good thing about a kid like Gregory is that he's already getting a taste of IC, of interest by Iowa. He has friends committed to the program and others considering it, and so if he plans on waiting if Iowa offers later at QB he'll realize it's a legit opportunity to win a QB job. This isn't some ethically messaged offer at QB with little belief he'll make it there he might get at some other schools. Hopefully, at an age of 17-18 he'll get the distinction.

Not what I was saying. I think he could be a QB, more of a dual threat, but if for some reason he doesn't he is still an athlete that could change positions. Wasn't saying trick him.

If Gregory gets an offer it needs to be genuine in it's own right. I'm not sure he and Diamond are as much a package deal as is popularly thought. Diamond's other top option appears to be Michigan and they haven't offered Gregory yet either. My guess is the coaches know they don't have to offer Gregory to up their chances with Diamond and if they do offer they want it to be because he's the right guy for the program.

I think that Iowa is still in the process of trying to evaluate Gregory. A big part of that evaluation will come off of watching his early season SR tape and seeing what sort of progress he's been making.

I think that folks have to remember that Iowa has a lot of genuine interest in Gregory ... but they also have a lot of genuine interest in Charles Rogers ... among a few other guys who have similar skill-sets. Both of those guys are "dual threat" guys who are the sort of athletes who could project at other positions.

The issue is that Iowa needs to see where these guys are at AND see if one of the guys can distance themselves from the others enough in order to merit garnering an offer.

This may have already been posted.

Iowa commitment Maurice Fleming continues to show that he is one of the best athletes in the Midwest. A high school quarterback, he is headed to Iowa as a cornerback, but worked out at receiver too at this camp. He is a well put together kid with great explosiveness, speed, and change of direction. He is very natural with the ball in the air and catches it very well. For a kid who has not played other positions a lot, he is not as raw technically as you would expect. He picks things up quickly and his physical attributes allow him to learn on the fly.
I think the Hawkeyes are getting a great one here and he is a kid who should continue to see his ranking rise. He has been impressive all summer and it matched what we saw on tape.

Johnson is a big man, so on some of the edge rushing drills, it just wasn't his forte, but put a man in front of him and that's when you see why he's so sought after. The Iowa commitment plays with good leverage, and is very powerful. He's going to be a plugger in college, but he's athletic and light on his feet enough to penetrate and disrupt. He still has technical work to do, but I think he's just the kind of guy you want over the nose in a smashmouth conference.

Hopefully we can end up landing some of these uncommitted guys from Chicagoland. It would be pretty wicked if we could land Coleman, Gregory, and Diamond. That would end up giving us an absolutely HUGE recruiting haul from the great state of Illinois.

Diamond posted on Twitter a few hours ago that he had a blast in AR and is looking forward to going back there again. For what it's worth.

I would think we would have seen an EJ tweet. Also, there are a few safeties left on Iowa's board that they have high interest in and it's reciprocal, so it'll be interesting to see.

I could easily imagine a few scenarios occurring ...

- Iowa offered and the kid wants to commit but hasn't yet committed (hence, he told his buddy ... but hasn't yet notified the coaches)

- Iowa offered a conditional offer and is waiting to hear from some other prospects before they're willing to accept a commitment from the kid.

- The kid is anticipating an offer from the Hawks and he intends on committing once he gets it.

- Some kids are just good talkers.

That would be great. Wondering how interested Diamond is in Arkansas. Apparently, he was Gregory's clear leader going into their visit there, and Diamond said he loved his visit and may take another one. One thing that may help us there is proximity for once...take that S-E-C.

Proximity helped us with Coe. Of course, he's now having to go the JUCO route ... but the point is that he was a highly recruited guy who still stuck nearby.

Hopefully proximity helps us with the current guys. Furthermore, having a bunch of buddies potentially joining him on the Hawk roster could provide even more of a "pull."

Just remember, part of what helped Iowa land Christian Ballard was the fact that he was friends with Brian Smith (a guy who committed to Iowa, only to switch over to Notre Dame at the last second). Thus, friendships have definitely helped us in the past.

Iowa was the first team to secure a spot in Quanzell Lambert's top 5 fwiw. Has a lot of quality offers, and has named his other 4 that made the cut. Don't know who though.
