No, it wasn't a perfect performance but after 24 hours of thinking about the game yesterday here are my top 10 positives heading in to week 2 ...

10) We had 15 people touch the ball on offense. When's the last time that happened?

9) D Line looked great

8) King picked up where he left off in the Outback Bowl ... he's a lock down corner and first team all BIG at the end of the year

7) Big improvement in kick offs with several through the end zone (coverage looked good also)

6) We do have some speed now ... Willies, Powell and Smith are going to be exciting to watch

5) No injuries yesterday

4) Bo Bower is going to be a stud ... he was all over the field.

3) Feels better than last year on Labor Day weekend ... I'll take a win over UNI over a loss to NIU any day

2) Clowns are 0-1

1) Hawks are 1-0

I believe Jake didn't throw a pick did he? I watched so much football yesterday I can't remember as I saw several picks from other games.

Nope, no picks for Jake. I think to continue to keep that from happening we need a couple of double moves off of the "Out Routes" that we ran yesterday. I anticipate corners and outside lb's who are covering the TE's to start jumping some of these.

Also, as disappointing as it was not to blow out an FCS team, at least we didn't get destroyed by an FCS team like the Clowns did. UNI and NDSU are both good teams, but a program in a major conference with it's resources shouldn't lose to an FCS team.

Yep, double moves by the WRs plus a pump fake by JR on the out move to get them to bite.

We also got points in the two minute drill at the end of the first half. Although, the clock management was awful. They wasted about 22-23 seconds by not calling that first time out sooner. I just don't get that. Were they only interested in a field goal? With 23 more seconds on the clock and one time out...that's a couple of throws in the end zone or at to get closer. Instead we do a 4 yard out on the sideline and go into the locker room with one time out left.

That was super annoying. I was screaming as loud as I could but I was 40 rows up. Horrible use of the timeouts before the half

11. I thought Mabin looked pretty good for his first time on the field in college. He's gonna be important this year as people realize they can't throw at King.

No fake punts were attempted by UNI, because it looked like maybe we were prepared better for that situation. Especially when the potential opportunity presented itself in 2nd half.

If they would have taken a TO right after the completion to I think it was Duzey (who was out of bounds, but called in bounds). Either that, or they just need to run up and spike it after a 1st down. To get the play in, the line set, it take 10 sec. before hiking, and that is too much time to lose at that point.

The rest of the drive the TO situation is fine, they had plenty of time til they wasted that 15 sec or more there.

Taking a few days to think about it, I feel that UNI might be the 4th or 5th toughest team on Iowa's schedule this year behind Wisconsin, Nebraska, Pittsburgh and Minnesota. Iowa showed plenty of potential, and plenty of room for improvement....all things that can be corrected.

No worries. As far as opening games go, aside from the score it was a good day. No injuries, plenty of experience for the new players and we saw some new wrinkles with the offense (and sadly some old ones as well).

No picks for Jake Rudock on Saturday.

Jake.......a very cerebral QB who is learning to dissect Defenses
& take what they give you. Hawkeye fans are goin to come to
appreciate Jake's smart play.

Cannot agree that there are no worries. The Linebackers, mainly Spearman & Q really need to improve their
pass coverage. Bo Bowers, the RS Freshman, in his first game experience, did a much better job than the other
2 in pass coverage. This is going to be a huge factor, this season. It may be the biggest determinant of how
successful IOWA is in 2014.

I think it was well before the Duzey throw. The first timeout should have happened at I think 1:15 or so...we went through the normal play selection and by the time we snapped the ball there were like 50 seconds or something left and we still didn't call the timeout after the next. Why take the clock down that low when you have three timeouts. Call the first one at 1:15 and go from there.

It was good to get points...but we should have had 25 to 30 more seconds at their 25 yard line and had an opportunity to get into the end zone or at least take a few shots. Baby steps I guess.
