Today's Performance Confiirms That the Best Players Weren't Always On Field in 2014

Re: Today's Performance Confiirms That the Best Players Weren't Always On Field in 20

If so, that's great. But doesn't it strike you as a bit strange....that a Coach with this much experience needs this kind of help?

I will spin it and say why did it take so long?

Back when I was a teacher/coach at the high school level I sat in coaching clinics with guys like Jerry Christiansen, Don Showalter and Gordon Rundquist, who were there taking notes and listening intently. These three guys won 1765 games in their careers so far, and they are still trying to get one more piece of information, one more drill, one more bit of knowledge that would give them an edge.

No, it doesn't strike me as strange at all. What would strike me as strange if he STOPPED trying to get this kind of help.

Ding, ding ding. This is exactly what I am trying to say. Belichek is constantly talking to guys on how to improve things that is why he constantly picks the brain of Urban Meyer and Chip Kelly. Saban is a stubborn sob, but he even realized how the sport was trending and acted accordingly.

Is anyone concerned at all with what appeared to be many open WRs yet again? Reece Fleming got turned around more that a ballerina at the Bolshoy!

Probably why he's second string.

Agree, intelligent people are ones who are aware of their weaknesses and are always trying to learn new things.

There were definitely some subtle differences in the way Iowa went about things Saturday, such as CJ turning and faking the screen pass then handing off the draw.things were less predictable and it was nice to see.

Is this a rhetorical question?

It took 9 games and 5 more losses to finally realize he should be playing the 1st string QB.

It might surprise you to learn that this is a common practice among the D-1 coaching fraternity. Fisher sent his staff from FSU to Iowa City to learn the nuances of the zone blocking scheme, a few years ago. It doesn't go on within conference but it's common.

I still don't think the performance against Illinois State proved anything.

One of our best defensive players was used as a punt & kickoff returner. King actually returned several punts for positive yardage. We went for it on 4th & 2 without a bruising fullback in the game and our field goal kicker is exceptional. We saw a nice screen play and a shovel pass play go for positive gains. Three true freshman played. Lots of backups including the #2 QB got in the game as well. We got the ball with :48 before halftime and took it down field and scored instead of running out the clock. The Hawks attempted a fake field goal too. The team seemed to play with an attitude. Overall, the Hawks looked pretty sharp for their first game. These were all noticeable changes from the past few years. The best thing to come out of this game was that the Redbirds were unable to find & exploit any weaknesses on the Hawkeyes. Last year, UNI provided a blueprint for Iowa's opponents to exploit all season long.

It's over and done with. It's a new season. Move along

For those saying Weisman shouldn't have been playing RB last years, will you at least concede that Canzeri having heel/ankle issues and Daniels missing 7 or 8 games gave permission for Weisman to be used? Or is that asking too much?

Weisman used to be the "poster-boy" for the Ferentz doesn't play the best players crowd!

Re: Today's Performance Confiirms That the Best Players Weren't Always On Field in 20

How many deep balls were hit yesterday? You'll have to remind me.

Who were the "better athletes" Kirk should have started at LB last year?

Players develop in college, often dramatically. A player this year is not the same guy he was last year.

Powell was rarely open, and when he was Jake couldn't hit him. Canzeri and Daniels were mostly hurt. Wadley did well before fumbleitis set in.

I grade your post "Fail".

Players improve every year. They get bigger, faster & stronger. Also, they learn more about the offensive & defensive systems. Because of this seasons are not connected. Last year Player A may have been bigger, faster & stronger than Player B and had a better under standing of the system. A year later the situation may be reversed. With kids in their late teens & early twenties the difference between one year & the next may be phenomenal.

tl,dr

Besides, iowalaw posted it. So we all know what it said

Ditto. Why people choose to take 1/2 hour out of their lives to write stuff people aren't going to read is beyond me. Seriously, people in are society today do not have the attention span for that anymore. Sad, but true.

coaches visit other schools/pro teams in the offseason every year, that's not anything new, and is not some sort of indictment of ferentz.
