Tired of people saying...

they are tired of moral victories and that the only thing that matters is a W.

If we were on the brink of the NCAA tourny every year where W/L counted then sure. But thats not what this team and the entire program is about at this point.

Rebuilding is about the little victories within the players, team, and the program that will hopefully set a foundation for W's on the court down the road. Sure we could be going balls to the wall for W's right now but wouldnt be laying the proper foundation for success in the long run. Moral victories are vital to this program and as a fan its ok to take joy from the little improvements.

Love,

I agree. I don't like moral victories either, but a W isn't everything right now with this team. A win would have been big, but I think they grow from it. None of us expected many victories this year, so this should not be a surprise at all. This team has definitely improved since game one of this year! They are rebuilding!

Is this loss to Wake a moral victory for the team? I'm afraid the team probably feels like the fans do:

We had a chance to be up 20+ points in the first half and closed out the 1st half poorly and alowed Wake to end on a mini run that led to the start of the 2nd half.

I would hope the team is pizzed for giving that one away and are ready to move on and take it out on Idaho State on Saturday?

I agree that moral victories are fine at this point in the program. Any time the team is competitive is pretty much like a win in a way. However I'm not going to be too thrilled when my team has a near 20 point win and effs it away.

I'm not "thrilled" but I'm also optimistic this team is improved and shows signs of going in the right direction. Probably won't reflect from a win-loss standpoint but much better to watch then over the last few years. This is a young team and the future is bright.

It's acceptable for fans to like moral victories. It's unacceptable for the players to like them.

I'm sure that's true. But unlike previous years, this serves as a great teaching tool. The team never learned a thing under Lick. I'd like to think Fran is a better teacher, he certainly has a ton more passion. He talks to his players, instead of turning to his assistants saying, "I just don't understand why they can't execute" (I imagined this is what our former basketball coach was always saying.)

This is Fran's first year as our head coach. The cupboard was about as bare as it could have been and Fran brought in a few players that could actually play D1 ball (Cartwright and Basabe). I liked listening to Kenyon Murray during one of the prior telecasts and he stated very clearly that the high school kids are going to like playing this type of ball. We have players on our team right now that in 5 yrs wouldn't have a chance of seeing the floor and for the first time in about 10 yrs I believe that to be true.

Fran's type of ball is fun to watch and has to be fun to play. The W's this year aren't going to pile up like most of us would like but we have to step back and look at the bigger picture. We are rebuilding. I like what I see.

What is a moral victory?

There is not a single team, at any level, that keeps track of "moral victories" in their record book. Not one.

Sorry. I will never agree with the term 'moral victory'.

Because, when someone is talking about a game being a 'moral victory' - it is always because your team lost.

A loss is a loss.

And, as far as losses go, last night's game was a microcosm of Iowa Basketball.

We lead by 18 points and lost because we cannot play defense on the perimeter (or anywhere else). We do not have a penetrating point guard. We do have a slashing wing (sorry, but May does not fit that mold for me).

Wake Forest is going to be a bottom dweller in the ACC. We had a chance to embarrass them on their home court and we let it get away.

There is no such thing as a moral victory.
The final score says: Wake 76, Iowa 73.

Wake won. Iowa lost. Nobody gets a moral victory.

Done right there. Any "moral victory" or "little victory" that there might have been was wiped away because of this and all that is left is a loss.

Agree- Any moral victory was completely wiped out right there. A moral victory would've been closing out the second half on the road. Let's be honest, Wake will probably be a bottom of the bucket ACC team and they should be considered beatable by a bottom of the bucket Big Ten team.

That said- there were a few bright spots, mainly in the first half.

This is a better way to look at things. Moral Victories are only when you win, if not, its a Moral Loss. Definitely some good things happened but no victories.

We are a developmental team. Did we see players improve? yes. marble and basabe looked more comfortable on the floor, made some shots and expanded their games...so within that context, which is all we have this year, it was a good game.
