Time to move the students

One benefit from the lack of interest in Iowa Basketball might be that the student sections might actually be able to be move right now. If you have like 5000 season tickets sold, you can situate those fans one on side of the court and give the students the front section of the other side.

It is a freaking no brainer. Don't wait until excitement grows and you have to move more people. Also, if you have some fat cat donor who doesn't want to give up his courtside seat, have your new prospective coach call this guy and tell him he won't come unless he can get the right game day atmosphere, which includes getting the students courtside.

This is the type of commitment Barta needs to show to the program. The program needs to focus on getting back to winning ways, not satisfying the selfish aims of a few donors that actually haven't been all that supportive. Get the program turned and get some new donors.

The students have messed this up almost as bad as the AD. They could have taken the high road and continued to show up through thick and thin but when the going gets tough you can count on the students not showing up. It's a two way street, do you give primo seats to kids that pay tiddly winks and might not show up? Or do you sell those seats for big money and who cares if anyone sits in them they are bought and paid for?

All I have to say is get it done! I have said this for years...get em all the way around from one basket to the other and get loud.

The sad thing about the students is that these guys are their classmates and friends. Where is the love students? Anyway i think this would be a good time to make the students around the whole bowl, along the bottom seats. Make the students load and active thru the whole game.

Actually, the best college arenas I have been in have a section of SRO student seats on one sideline. Some places these actually are not even seats, but just risers.

Who cares if anyone sits in the seats? Well, anyone who wants a good game day experience. But again, there are so few season ticket holders now that you wouldn't have to move many.

For the UNC v Duke game I can remember them having a camera on the student section the whole game one year, the screen was split into 3 shots.

We need an active student section like that. Fan support at games absolutely makes a difference.

Really who cares whee the 75 students sit? It won't change anything. The ones who come just sit there. They certainly don't cheer. Even when let in free and given Pizza, very few show up. I have become ambivilent.

If Barta hits a home run with his hire, the students will be back....especially if it is a young buck like Pastner.

It would not surprise me if Pearl, Barbee, Drew, Pastner or Forbes are hired to see them get the student section moved.

I agree, something needs to be done to get the students closer to the action and on camera. As Hlas stated in his article, changing the entire gameday atmosphere should be a priorty.

Didn't Alford try to get something done with moving the student section when he first got here? I know they re-named it the " Hawks nest ".

Alford did a good job of trying to get the students involved. While he was here they moved the student section from a side/corner to behind a basket/corner and as you mention labeled in the hawks nest.

Alford also significantly reduced the price of season tickets for students. They are now so cheap that you can hardly afford to not go to the games...prior to that I don't even think there was a discount or it wasn't anything to speak of.

You would only need students on the floor on one side of the court...the problem right now is that the section of students who are on the side of the court do get loud and involved...but 90% of the student section is still behind the basket.

I sat in the student section in '05-06 and every game but two we got there early enough to get in that small section on the side of the court (which meant an hour and a half before the game)...and we went absolutely nuts. The two games that we sat behind the basket...we barely cheered and they were good games (Indiana and Minnesota I believe).

Get real! Blaming the students...really? Why should the students be held to a higher standard than...well...you?

If you give primo seating to students that accomplishes two objectives...number one it would go a long way in assuring that students are at the games (behind the basket really does suck)...number two it would go a long way in creating a winning environment. It would make us a much tougher team to beat in Carver...and even when the team is bad...if CHA is rocking (which it would be with students down front)...then the general public is more likely to come than when you've got a bad team and a boring arena.

So by saying that the students aren't showing up because of where they currently sit aren't you just proving my point? If they gave two craps wouldn't they show up just because they want to cheer for their school? I'm not blaming anyone, I'm blaming everyone take it easy. Are you an RA or something?

But why should the students be held to a higher standard than the general public? It still costs money for students to go to the games.
