Time Crunch? What does the DC hiring time frame say about the decision?

What does the time frame of the DC hiring decision say about the process? The longer this goes does it make it more or less likely that the hire is made outside the program?

I can see arguments going both ways, but it my mind the longer this draws out the more likely it is that we are hiring outside the program. If there were a clear cut plan in place I think that plan would have been executed by now. A short time after the Norm gone press conference KF would have come out and said XXXXX is our new DC, there will be some additional staff changes that will result and we will sort them out after the bowl game.

The fact that didn't happen makes me think that KF is at least entertaining the idea of going outside the walls at Fort Kinnick. That doesn't necessarily mean he won't hire someone from within, it just means he want's to explore all of his options before he decides who's hands he's going to place his defense in going forward.

Of course you could just chalk the wait up to KF being 100% focused on the Bowl game vs. Oklahoma. If he’s anything like his “I’m just focused on next week†media persona privately that certainly could be the case. But again it’s hard to imagine he hasn’t given it at least some thought, and he certainly had ample time in the last off-season to think about this (I don’t believe for a second that both NP and KF didn’t know going in to the season that this would be NP’s last).

I don't think you can read into it too much. If I've learned anything about Ferentz over the years its that he's is going to do whatever it is he's going to do for his own reasons whether it makes any sense to anyone else or not. In this case he maybe holding off making the announcment because he wants to let Norm has his last moment and he might do that even if its not what's best for the team in terms of recruiting for this year. He's a fiercly loyal friend and I respect that.

I agree 100%, I think he is considering outside options. I also think regardless of his decision he will wait until 2012 to make any announcements.
I have a gut feeling it will not be Stoops, and that's ok as long as who we bring in from the outside is quality. Aiken would be my first choice if my opinion mattered which it doesn't.
On a side note, Duff why do YOU think recruiting has been down in the state of Florida as of late?

I don't think you can read into it too much either, but I will say this. If the hire comes from the outside and he is a recruiter, then why do we not do it now and use the Urban rule so he can be out recruiting for us.

Have to wait for the Cardinals season to officially be over to announce our new DC...at least that is what I am thinking will happen.

I think the recruiting angle, at least as it leads to the few weeks between the announcement and the bowl game is overblown. Regarding this years class the hay is in the barn. It would be a different story had NP been a recruiting guy and had recruits tied to him.

Maybe it's Aiken with the new rumors about Coach K and Nebby. Would make sense that K would want to move on if his predecessor was coming back to be DC and would also have DLine as individual focus.

It had never occurred to me that it was, and to be honest I don't really care. It's not my job to know and understand all the inner working of Iowa football. If some no name position coach ain't getting it done, on the field, or on the recruiting side cut him loose what do I care. I'm more concerned with the Macro, or what it looks like on TV on Saturday. I think there are much more pressing issues with this team than our Florida recruiting success, or lack there of.

I think any delay is mostly out of respect for Norm. It goes without saying that Kirk will consider all the options for DC and is probably getting phone calls and resumes as we type. I think Phil Parker is leading choice but Kirk will consider others. If someone else is chosen, then Phil probably goes elsewhere within the next year.

I am sure Kirk is more focused on Oklahoma now and we will find out the new DC some time in January. I dont think Norm's status or unfilled DC has any impact on recruiting for coming LOI date.

I think Kirk's only focus right now is the Oklahoma game. This is where he makes his money. Win the last game of the season and leave Hawkeye fans with something positive to think about until the following season.

I think it is Stoops and they dont want that to overpower the bowl game. I also think it gives KF a good out to rally the troops if they get pounded by OU.

I read that Barta said during the PC on Friday that they can't announce a replacement until at least two weeks after the job has been publicly posted, which it hasn't yet. That means it will be at least January 3 before we know who it will be.

This is interesting. KF eases the tension of a 7-6 season which concludes by getting pounded by Oklahoma in the bowl game by announcing a relatively big name (Stoops) and popular choice to replace NP as DC.

I don't know that I'd buy it as KF hasn't proven to be a very PR savy guy, but this would certainly be a good move, at least from that stand point.

This is a good point as well. Since it's a state job they probably have to post it on the website and follow strict guidelines in terms of the hiring process. Someone should check to see if it's posted on the Iowa website. I might have to apply.

I think it is a combinationof the above and they have their guy and it is outside. I think it is Aiken or Stoops.

The fact Stoops hasn't landed and turned down a few interests makes you wonder how strong those rumors are.
Add in the fact that Coach K is looking hard also tells you this hire may be comong from the outiside.
The more this drags out the more I think it is Stoops.

Actually, if true, it is the only point. If true, nothing else is indicated by the delay. Nothing.
