Throwback games in the fieldhouse!

In the upcoming seasons I would like to see a few throwback games in the Iowa Fieldhouse. Combine these with homecomings for some of the great historical teams of Iowa's past. These could re-spark some much needed interest in Hawkeye Basketball.

I have a cool link for you, Iowa Illinois 1982 in the fieldhouse. Watch in the second half Bob Costas talks about how hard of a place it was to play that opponents came out of there with a loss, an ear ache and pneumonia.

Going to be a little bit hard to play a game in there.

And fit the 4000 people that usually attend them will be even more difficult.
Have you been to the Fieldhouse in a while?

Who is this Garfino guy?

Also, Herky looks to be copying Carfino's hairdo.

I have been there since CHA was built. I took some classes in the mid 90s, and I know it was gutted. It could still be done however with temporary bleachers. Put them on what is now the side courts and the upper track. Come on at least have an exhibition or something in there. Maybe the midnight start up for the seasons practices even.

Thanks for that video. I'm 27 so had never seen what the fieldhouse looked like. I had looked for pictures before but couldn't find any. It is pretty much what I had imagined.

Well, it'd be an excuse to sell out.

But seriously, if it was feasible, it'd be kind of fun. Bring back the old school unis.

I think it would be a neat idea.....they need to do it right. A game might be out of the question but a midnight madness type of event with seating for a couple thousand. It would be a little closer to the students.

This would be a good way to go. Midnight madness in the fieldhouse, sounds great!

Is the floor that is down now the same one that they played on?

The old floor has been placed in the north gym. The wrestling team had a multi-team dual in the north gym in 2008. They had so many people show up, that the bleachers were packed full and people had to sit on the floor.

I never got to see a game live at the Fieldhouse, but saw many on TV. That place would rock when the crowd got going.

The FH is nowhere near being capable of hosting a basketball event, not a chance to even get 2000 people in there with how it is set up now.

I think 2-4k is possible. They cut off the main floor at the pilers right? But there is a track up above so the space remaining is like that of the armory that was used before the fieldhouse and that held 4k with a similar setup. Temporary bleachers on the upper track, and a few down by the court. That building however was converted into a library and torn down in the early 1980s so I have little information on how it was exactly setup.

Helluva post, it really brought back memories; even got to see my Dad in the crowd. Just wonderful!

It really shows how much college basketball has changed since the three-point arc and shot clock. Notice how the teams set up their offense much closer to the basket than they do today and tried to pound the ball inside? Teams guarded the basket and not the three-point line!

It was good to see the four corners offense again; though I glad, it is gone from the game.

Oh, to be in my late twenties again!
