Throw it in the endzone on 4th down from the opponents 30 yd line

every other coach in america would go for that even if it was 4th and 13. WTF. I was at Purdue in the great 2007 season when the Hawks ended the first half at midfield or Purdue 45.

It was 4th down and Kirk let the clock run down to 3 seconds and took a time out. I thought "yeah" hail mary time.

but no he punted. WHAT!!! The 3 of us thought why did we drive 9 hours to see that.

Why does it have to go into the end zone? How about the radical idea of running a 15 yard pass play?

You're 4-7 having already lost 4 home games, playing the #14 team in the country....yeah you go for it. PLAY TO WIN

I agree, I was being melodramatic and even going for a FG or throwing a bubble screen and trying to break a couple of tackles would be better than punting

Punting it sideways into the stands wouldve been better...at least that wouldve been entertaining

i have never, ever seen a team punt from the opponent's 31 yard line before. that was unreal.

How about when we had a second and 2 and ran into the line for a 1 yard gain, then on third and one tried the play action deep ball, pass incomplete, then came back on 4th and threw incomplete again? Why in the **** do you not try the play action on 2nd down there when EVERYONE knew we were going to run and if you don't get it, you have two more downs to get the two yards? I think this coaching staff tries to make things as hard on themselves as possible...

Ferentz's mentor, the old Sly Fox himself, would have done that, and did on several occasions that I can recall. Even if the play winds up in an interception near the goal line, chances are great that the opponent takes over deep in its own territory.

you people do realize they were punting into a 30 mph wind, when getting the ball to go more than 30 yards was a big deal, just as easily could have been downed at the 1 as it going into the endzone,
down it at the one and the coach made a great call. go into the endzone and everybody goes WTF

Yeah, punting it 30 yards really looked tough on that play. It is not like they were punting from their own end zone where you have to kick the ball into the wind. Where they were at on the field the wind had little chance to knock that ball down.

If they absolutely HAD to punt on that play they should have gotten someone to pooch kick it towards the sideline. Instead they had Weinke punt it regularly and the kick sailed into the endzone, netting 10 yards. I am with everyone else, you are 4-7 they had nothing to lose by going for it.

Iowa was 4-7. Why not play aggressive? We had every bit as good a chance to pick up a first down, make a field goal, maybe pick up a penalty call as we did downing the ball on the one yard line. It was a typically stupid, gutless call that has been a trademark of Kirk Ferentz era.

Redhawk. YOU STUPID!

Kirk doesn't know how to play to win. He only knows how to play not to lose. Unfortunately lose is still part of the equation.

Throwing in the end zone on 4th down, that's a moot point. JVB would have just sailed the ball 10 yards out of bounds or five yards short of a receiver. But let's never forget, he gave us the best chance to win...

Ferentz has done some unbelievable things on the sidelines...but this one takes the cake. It's almost as if he was trying to throw the game. If this was the NFL, the league would probably be investigating him to see if something fishy was going on.

At least 8 - 10 times every yr (almost 1 per game), KF punts when every other coach in America goes for it, leaving us fans speachless. Can remember losing 14-7 and 21-7 to NW sometime around 2006 or 2007, and KF, on 4th and 1 at the NW 36 yardline, punted into the endzone twice in the 3rd qtr. He is absolutely legendary in the in-game coaching head-scratchers. I swear a junior-high coach would be a better game manager.

Umm, Kirk, rather than debating message board poasters, shouldn't you be tending to something important, like hiring a new OC, filling the two running back slots you are going to have next year or even your Twitter account?

Not to mention LOCKED IN for another 20-30 million or so. What's wrong Kirk? Can't afford to be aggressive?
