Three Positive Developments

Let's give Alex Padilla a little credit too for winning 3 games in 2021 and finishing and winning the NW game that Petras started.
He played well against NW. Then, he was back to being the worst QB to wear an Iowa uniform since Bob Cummings kid my fresh and soft years, so that's 45 season ago I think. One of Alex's TD throws against Minnesota was an overthrow that KJ somehow got high enough to bring it in, then break a tackle and run 38 yards. Alex made a good deep throw to Charlie Jones for a long TD. Charlie was wide open but Padilla did amazingly hit him in stride. Petras was a bad QBack but Iowa has not seen worse than Alex Padilla. Actually, few schools of P5 status have seen it.

DON'T LISTEN TO THIS GUY. HE WANTED DAN MCGWIRE TO TRANSFER OUT AS WELL.

Get Out of Town, Spartan Losers

Let's see, McGwire transferred and the other guy, Chuck Hartlieb, goes on to be All Big Ten for 10-3 Iowa. Think the right guy got the job.

WHAT DID THE NFL SCOUTS SAY ABOUT IT? WHO WENT HIGHER IN THE DRAFT? MCGWIRE GOES 13-0 WITH THAT TEAM.

If Cade and Hill both come back next season, I wouldn't be shocked at all if Labas and/or Lainez hit the portal. It's the way of college sports now. No patience, and money to be made.

I just hope that Resar sticks with his commitment and stays patient. He has a very intriguing and very athletic skill set, and could be that dual-threat guy that many of us have been clamoring for for years (that is, of course, if the coaching staff is open to it).

Labas for sure I could see bailing but not Lainez. I think he'd stick it out till his 3rd yr on campus before leaving if he doesn't beat out Hill then. But heck if I know. the QB game of musical chairs is always fluctuating.

That Resar kid is as athletic of a QB as Iowa's ever had commit. He'll damn near be the fastest kid on the team the day he steps on campus. Will be interesting come signing day if he still will be a Hawk. I haven't heard how his HS season has started out this yr but I assume he's running circles around highschoolers.

Why didn't he go undefeated in the much weaker WAC when he transferred?

Why are you screaming at me in 20-point bold font? About something 36 years ago? I haven't given that McGwire kid any thought in those 36 years. I could have been wrong, not conceding that but it happens a few times every decade. I know it seems like it shouldn't happen but, it happens.

We will run the same offense regardless of personnel.

Agree to disagree on Hill. I do agree that some guys are just gamers - which is why maybe Labas is the best QB on the roster. Embarrassment of riches lately at QB on this team. Remember when Labas had to sit behind Petras and Padilla last year? I mean we all got it, Hawks did nothing but win when those two started. If it ain't broke don't fix it kind of thing.

But I think we all saw the real talent when Kirk had to throw the freshman in last year. Total gamer - doesn't take a snap all year and then puts up 21 on the SEC's top defensive team before Kirk decided to sit on the ball and go home with a drama free bowl win. The way Labas carved up that D probably has something to do with why Hawk fans want nothing to do with any of the Stoops boys coming back to coach at Iowa. You don't take a beating like that and then get a chance to take over at Iowa.

And maybe Labas would have won the battle in camp this August if he hadn't been hurt. You can't keep a gamer like that off the field. But now Kirk is making him win back his spot at number 1, because we know he'd never just anoint a starting QB without making him beat out the competition.
Interesting post. Not sure I buy it, but credit is due.

That is what OKeef does. I have him blocked. Got tired if his nonsense.

I've been doing some other reading about Hill. Did not know he was a 4* out of HS. Someone said he would only have received offers from Iowa. He actually held offers from at least Kansas State, UCLA, Wisconsin, and Nevada. HS rep was a pure thrower. There is a reason to be optimistic about the injury development.

Yup. I think he was recruited for his potential to develop.

Well, I've been screaming for Labas since Game 3 last year. These terrible QBs are going to kill the year. This season is the end of Iowa football anyway, so I'd like to go away with 10 or 11-win season.

Correct. Hill is the first guy in years who has that "give me the damned ball" look about him. He's either going on the wall of champions or he is the sole passenger on a train to Chumpsville if this offense stays this bad the rest of the season. I'm going with the positive path for now. I see something in him. This guy ain't Randy Reiners or Jake Christensen.
I'm thinking a level below Reiners or Christensen.

Well, let's start with Jake Christensen. He started one year and threw 17 TDs and 6 Interceptions, with a few lost fumble. That is more TDs than all of the Iowa QBs have collectively thrown in the 27 games of the 22 and 23 seasons. Around 53% Completion Rate. The 6 interceptions is 9 fewer than all of QBs in all of the games for the 22 and 23 seasons. QB rating 87.4

Well, we gave Hill the damn ball, for 8 games. Here's what he did with it. Only 48.6% completion rate, 5 TDs and 8 Interceptions. Hill's YPA was 4.6. I'm much too tired to go game by game but I'm thinking at least 7 lost fumbles and -114 on sacks. He usually looked completely lost. He has no touch on his passes, making them hard to catch. He frequently missed seeing wide open receivers.

Jake C Threw for 2259 yards and a 6.1 YPA. Completion rate 53.6% We've discussed the TD/Int ratio. Talk about bad lines, Jake was sacked 46 times with a young and very injured line, much worse than the line this year, albeit that is not setting a high bar. JC's QB rating was 116.9.

So you're right, Hill is nothing like Jake C. Jake was better at every metric upon which QB's are rated.

Hill is terrible. He should never see the field again, barring injuries to at least McNamara and Lainez next season, and I'd gamble on Resar over Hill.

Lainez is obviously much more talented. First game jitters explain the missed passes. If Hill can get 8 games I'm sure we can be patient for a couple of games with Lainez in the throwing department.

Hey, sorry I didn't shit all over the kid who got foisted into a spot he was woefully unprepared for. Dude is on the train to chumpsville, it sucks, but we have seen enough to move on.
