Thoughts on Vandenberg

I only noticed a few bad passes he threw all game. The fades to Davis could have had a little bit more air under them, but the dback made excellent plays on both of those throws. Another one over the middle where a TE was open over the middle (Herman, maybe?), albeit in between two defenders. And there was a throw to McNutt down near the North endzone, where it was caught, but thrown behind Marvin. He was tackled at the 2, but if he would have been lead more it would have been six. Other than that, fantastic job for Vandy today. Looking forward to the rest of the season.

Wow...you people have some serious expectations. QB's first game, terrible weather, and he ends up 13-20, with 2 TDs. Granted the two throws to Davis, in particular the first, were not great, but he also had at least 4 completely dropped balls by his receivers.

Think about that 17-20 should have been caught and one of the bad throws, his receiver went up and got it.

All I have to say is "Ricky Who?".

Vandenberg will be better, and I think much better. He's already considerably more accurate. The question is, when the games on the line, can he make it happen. The only other issue is that he doesn't have the defense that Ricky had in 2009 and maybe even 2010. We will have to wait and see.

He looked pretty good. He made a few poor throws but I'm more concerned by the number of drops. Herman dropped at least two & the throw to Derby in the end zone was a perfect throw. Drops like Derby's could come up & bite the Hawks in the derrriere against a better opponent. Sort of like the missed extra point against Wisconsin last year.

For JVB solid first game nothing spectacular, but also nothing awful so should have helped him build some confidence going into next weeks game at ISU.

This thread is awesome. Guy has a 180 passer rating while the stairs in Kinnick turned into waterfalls, and people are saying, "he did okay."

Don't you realize we have a guy who didn't miss a beat replacing a guy who is in the freaking NFL?

As far as the two fades are concerned, that pass is really hard to execute correctly in the rain.

Agreed...it's funny how you can come to this board and feel like people watched a different game. Someone just said he underthrew a bunch...what? I've felt all along that JVB ability to convert the short throws in going to keep our offense on the field and our defense off it.

This game confirms that. Every one of those short throws was right on the money and right on time. Move the chains.

The only problem I saw is that our TE's underperformed in the passing game...Herman and CJ both had drops. That was disappointing.

He was just fine. And he will get better, which will mean he will be better than fine.
I love this kid. He has the ''Golden Arm''. And he has the rest of the package also.
With his footwork, I feel like he will never throw a bad pass, and he probably will throw very few.

He is a better pure passer than Ricky, but leading the Hawks to victories is the final test for a QB...a lot of victories...like 11 this year, and 11 next year, will do just fine.

Said this a while back, he will be far better than Stanzi.

We may be the only ones who think that. I keep hearing "better pure passer", but I think this guy is going to be a better clutch player also. It remains to be seen, and Stanzi was clutch as hell in 2009, but he came up completely empty in 2010. No game winning drives, other than Indiana in 2010, which I almost don't count.

Everything JVB has shown tells you he could be "destined for greatness" as Hayden put it. He now has to show what he can do with the game on the line against a defense that is coming hard. I think, based on what he did two years ago at OSU with the Rose Bowl on the line, he'll prove he can handle it and thrive.

We are going to be very tough to stop offensively. We can run the ball, and we can play ball control in the passing game. Young teams usually make great strides from game one to game two...I'm interested to see how they do on the road against ISU.

+ 1. However, how about some LOVE for the OL. I may have missed some but I can't recall more than one or two times that he was under pressure. Much easier to stay calm and confindent when you're not getting your *** handed to you. Hopefully that kind of protection continues.

Add me to your group.

I finally got to see the rest of the game after the rain delay and all I can say about the Iowa QB's is that they kept throwing to the wrong location......right in the receivers hands. Let's hope it was just the rain and the receivers (excluding McNutt of course) can learn to hang onto the ball. Both QB's looked good.

I don't count that. Indiana had a game losing drive by dropping a TD in the endzone. Either way I agree with your post.

Not counting Indiana is a complete logic fail. He led the team to a TD the last time he had the ball, that's all he could do. It's not like he had any control over what the D did.

I meant more of that it wasn't exactly a game winning drive like he had in 2009. It was a go ahead drive, which Indiana had the chance to win, and failed.
