Thoughts on the hawks...

Iowa was forced into a half-court offense, something they haven't ran much of at all this season. Transition buckets were slim to none and the press wasn't very effective.

Stormin that game reminded me of Tom Davis coached teams playing Duke and not being able to do anything being forced out to 20+ feet all game long. I was more upset about the lack of passion shown.

Not having Cole down low for boards and hustle really showed yesterday. Cole was undersized, but always left it all on the court. No way do we get punked in the paint with him on the floor. What was it at one time....something like 24-4 points in the paint?

Eh, we got beat by a wussy school that doesn't play football. Any REAL university plays football, the rest are just diploma mills for the dorks.
Discuss...

Iowa got beat by a solid Creighton team that played with the added chip on their shoulder of a roster filled with Iowa kids wanting to prove something while the hawks came in expecting another easy game and went ice cold shooting.

No transition if we don't make baskets and/or rebound well. Took us completely out of our game. We are/should be a better team this year. Only Cole is missing, as HawkIhoops said, but Cole wouldn't have made the game any better for that Hawks to any significant degree.

At the end of the season this will merely be another loss among others, hopefully not too many. :) We shall see how we respond to this discouraging game yesterday. I feel positive about Fran getting things together. Time to let this one go no matter how hard it is. Positive Vibes, Positive Vibes....Keep saying it.....Posiitve Vibes.....

lets face it this team needed a wakeup call and got it by a major beatdown by Creighton
if this didn't let the Helium out of their heads i am not sure what will
why Helium; not only were their head so swollen they were also in the clouds

As far as the whole assessment of talent. Creighton did a decent job on defense and took Iowa out of its transition game. Iowa failed to hit easy shots and then gave up. It was like this game was annoying for Iowa to come and play. I feel sorry for all the Hawk fans who showed up to cheer on the team because the team put in no effort to give fans anything to cheer about. It is very hard to assess talent when one team doesn't even show up to play. Iowa and Creighton had two of the same opponents for their first 3 games. They beat them by similar margins, so maybe that is where I look at it and try to forget this game ever happened. I feel betrayed that I got so excited to see this game in person and the Hawks never showed up.
A ton of material for the film room! Hopefully this is a good teaching lesson for the team and they can move on from here.
Okay I vented. I feel better now.

Echenique >>>>>>>> Archie
McDermott >> Basabe
Gibbs > May (slight)
Cartwright > Young (slight)
Gatens >> Manigat

Iowa's bench >> Creighton's bench in regards to depth and overall talent 6-10.

I would put another > between McDermott and Basabe but other than that you are right on. That's not a knock against Basabe either but the McDermott kid is good, has great body control and basketball intelligence that far surpasses all others on the floor.

They are a better TEAM with only marginally better talent from 1-5. They have players that fit every position from the PG to the C position. We have a very good PG, marginal wings and a terrible, TERRIBLE C position.

To me it all came down to one thing. Shooting. The Hawks had a lot of open looks and bunnies that just clanked off of the iron.

If they were making those shots, it would have been a different ball game.

hard to argue with this

1) Iowa didn't shoot well enough to beat a good team.
2) Iowa didn't rebound well enough to beat a good team.
3) Iowa didn't defend well enough to beat a good team
4) Iowa didn't hustle enough to beat a good team.

Have to disagree with you on a couple points here, Stormin. Gibbs is more than a slight improvement vs May in my mind. I'd take him over May in a heartbeat. He brings more to the table than May against good competition. Sure, May looks solid against the crap teams; but whenever he faces decent competition. his weaknesses are exposed. He can't dribble well and has a slow first step. This makes him a non-factor most of the time in our offense because solid defenders can completely shut him down. Our offense really stagnates when he touches the ball in the half-court. Plus, I don't see his defense making up for this on any sort of consistent basis. It looks like he should be a good defender, but I just don't see it enough.

Also, I don't see McDermott vs Basabe being the same difference as Gatens vs Manigat. McDermott's game is much more well-rounded than Basabe's on offense and he consistently puts up better effort on the glass and defensively. McDermott would be our best player by a wide margin. Shoot, I think he'd be a top 10 player in the B1G. He might even sneak into the top 5. Right there with Hummel after Sullinger, Taylor, Mbakwe, Green.

Creighton played a great game. Let's hope Iowa's performance is attributable to everyone having an off-night. Too early to tell one way or the other. It sure didn't look like the same team that beat Purdue at the end of last season.

Creighton has 2 really good players in McDermott and Young. Otherwise we had the better talent. For whatever reason "we" didn't show up yesterday...at all. Mel's best minutes were spent on the bench and we couldn't hit a free throw. I think if we hit those free throws and keep it a 6 point game it keeps the crowd and players into it. The game started slipping and we just folded. Thankfully it's early and we still have a favorable non-conference schedule to get the lineup figured out.

wow. I was at the game. Looked like Jr high kids (Iowa) playing against the high school varsity. Iowa does not have better talent at any position than Creighton.

Who on Iowa's team would have started for Creighton?

I won't argue that one bit.

Gatens and Cartwright.

I was at the game. The problem was many of our shots were contested, most of theirs weren't. Even the shots we had that weren't contested weren't going down. We also missed free throws in the first half when Creighton started pulling away which might have kept us in the ballgame. Once they pulled away we got demoralized most likely and it all snowballed from there.

my thoughts are that the position 1,2, and 3, go to Iowa the 4 & 5 clearly goes to Creighton, this is where Iowa lost the game on the inside, Basabe is a 4 in a 3's body, he is limited in shooting range, Archie is giving all he has, but would not start for another team,
I really like the effort he gives, there is no quit in the kid, i just wish Basabe would give the same effort this year
next year this will change Woodbury will be the mismatch at 7'1, Meyer at 6'10 will also present problems, but they too will go thru the growing pains of youth, White with a year of maturing and growth will also be a difference maker and a mismatch problem, i still feel Olaseni will make a difference just on height alone

Good observations. I would also add that we need to close out on guys after they make a couple of shots. Nothing dirty, just an assist to the floor and maybe even 3 free throws if necessary. Oglesby made what, maybe two shots, before Creighton sent him to the floor on the next couple? We allow guys to unpack a lunch before we get a hand in their face.
