Thoughts on the game tonight

Man I FREAKIN HATE Todd Lickliter.

But on another note a few positives:
-Gatens is looking much better
-Brommer continues to improve
-McCabe played tough tonight
-I like Marble's 'knack' for the game

On the flipside:
-We still need a major upgrade of talent in the front court
-May looks like he's lost his confidence
-Archie has to be gone after this year, he doesn't have enough talent to play on this team and we need his scholly
-Tim Doyle is a complete ******, how does this idiot get a tv job?

First half defense lacked a bunch. Second half start doomed the team in.

Bassabe didn't see the court much at all and when he was in was lost and very ineffective.

Pretty much got what your going to get from many of the players. Iowa's inside defense was pretty good the whole game, but Illinois got way to many open looks beyond the 3 point line.

Any big man that is 6'9" or taller that wants to rebound, play defense and get a lot of playing time would be welcome!

Recruiting came most to mind with me tonight. Other than defending the 3 ball, I believe in Fran's style of play. But, defending the 3 ball I think is an extension and reflection of getting more size and athleticism at Iowa. It will come down to recruiting for Fran. There are certainly positives they can take away from this, but we are going to take our lumps this year in the Big Ten. Just don't have enough size and athleticism.

Yea it was good to see Gatens hititng them tonight hopefully he keeps that up the rest of the season.

Iowa really needs to work on Defense though it was just horrific and FT shooting as well of course... SMH

32/48 - 66.7% Total FG %
13/18 - 72.2% 3 point FG %

You are going to beat anybody with defense like that.

Not really related to game thoughts from tonight, but it doesn't get much easier over the next 6 games...they showed our upcoming schedule.

OSU x2
Purdue
Northwestern
Minnesota

One other team...I think NW was the only one that wasn't ranked, and 3 of those games are on the road.

They just don't seem "very smart" on perimeter defense along with lacking closing quickness on shooters. Our guards lose track of their man and where the ball is. Our perimeter defenders don't rotate well on ball reversal. Way to many open shots. And not hitting the free throws is just killing this team.

Iowa was down 19 early in the second half and played as well as Illinois the rest of the game. They lost to a top-25 team by 10 points or less for the fourth time in last two seasons. The Hawks seem to be one player, even just a few plays, away from being able to beat top teams.

Still can't guard the perimeter or hit free throws. If do both those things we win this one. If we've been doing it all year we have a pretty good record.

Oh well, I think the potential is there for us to be good again. Hopefully we can get good players.

We won't win for awhile. Just a brutal schedule to start the year. It'd be nice if we faced Penn State, Michigan and Indiana to start the year instead of being thrown to the dogs.

We can't guard the perimeter because our bigs are not big enough to guard the inside. We need to seriously upgrade our C and F positions. McCabe and Brommer are both good enough in my opinion but we need taller players.

Overall good game. We kept it close but made some seriously dumb mistakes with the ball. Too many open shots were passed up and the ball didn't swing fast enough. I like what I see and hopefully the talent will come in the near future.

We are short on talet to win in the big ten. I know we just want to compete at this point and that's a start but the next step is to win. Recruiting will be the difference maker.

Cully being inured has been a blessing in disguise. Cartwright is our starting PG this year and next.

Gatens and McCabe aren't athletic enough and don't have enough talent around them to make it in the big 10. My comparison is Blake Hoffarber for Minn. He's not that athletic but has a quick release and has enough athleticism around him that can penetrate and kick to him to get him the shots.

Cole- love his heart but not tall enough

Basabe- I like his potential... but he's a freshman and there are games like tonight where this presence is not felt.

May- He is athletic but he still needs to work on his ball handling skills and basketball IQ. He uses the baseline frequently but steps out of bounds frequently on these drives.

Marble- He might be the player of the game... He's still playing out of position at PG.

Overall... I expected us to lose tonight by 10 or more so not much suprise.

On a side note I don't understand the "baby steps" or we have "turned the corner"

Recruiting is the key. Fran's uptempo style can work but he has to get the athletes in the program. He's trying to run this style with Lick's recruits so he still needs a lot of time but I'm not ready to say Fran will get the job done just because he has changed the style. I would be glad to have a slower style (Wisconsin) if we were winning.

Imagine Jake Kelly running this show...

Anyways in real life, Basabe has the flu still which is why he didnt play much or well. Also, I was at the game and the crowd was nice but the play where May was on a breakaway and was intentionally fouled ended up being the killer.

I think the young guys on this team are a good base to a decent team in 3-4 years

Basabe is still fighting illness. Yes, he was ineffective because of that, but don't be saying he was "lost".

I wish the players would just forget standard free throw shooting "form", and shoot their normal jump shot when taking free throws... should never shoot worst for the foul situation than from the field. That or use bank...

I'm really impressed with Illinois' offense. They have a lot of weapons and really move the ball well and spread it out. I see them getting 25 wins this year and doing well in The Dance.

Basabe did lose his man a few times. He tends to lose his man from time to time when the ball is on the opposite side of the floor. His recovery from sickness probably did not help things but Basabe has been "lost" at times this year on the defensive end. I think he tends to lose focus, the ball reverses quickly, his man slips behind him too far for Mel to recover and scores. It tends to happen a few times a game so far this season. I think he will stop making this error but just needs more practice and a bit of a helpful reminder from time to time. I think at times he forgets he is playing guys just as tall, long and athletic as him more frequently and he cant rely on this length/athleticism to make up for a blown assignment by blocking a shot.

Hope he starts feeling 100% over the next couple days and is ready for OSU

Love the new tempo, Cartwright and Marble will continue to improve, Gatens needs to keep asserting himself in the 2nd half, Baasbe is young but has great upside, I hope Fran doesnt have a heart attack before he turns this around, I love his intensity and fury. If every Hawkeye played with the effort and heart Cole does we would be fine. Hawkeye fans have to be patient, we have a great system and coaches but we need to upgrade the recruiting in the next 3 years otherwise we will be stuck with moral victories like last night. Illinois has no inside game if they dont shoot well they will get beat, but they have a lot of really talented perimeter players.
