Thoughts on Horner or Stokes as an assistant?

First off, it doesn't matter if either one of them have "recruiting ties" or have coaching experience. There are no former Hawkeye players that have the qualifications to be Associate Head Coach or Top Assistant. A former player will come in and be the third assistant. Third assistants are NOT hired for recruiting ties. They are coaches who are trying to gain experience and understanding of the coaching profession.

I would think Kevin Gamble would.

Kevin Gamble is the one I am thinking will be the next assistant. Outside of Davis has the most to bring to the table.

I could see someone like Horner become a Grad Assistant. Not sure if Recker or Settles would want to go that route.

For me, I feel Jeff isn't quite prepared for this level yet, but I could be wrong. I like Speraw, Davis (Rodell), and Gamble as options before Jeff.

Horner was one of my all time favorite Hawks so hope he gets a chance to be an assistant or graduate assistant. Although it may be better to add a former hawk with more recruiting ties.

Horner is not going to get the gig. McCaffery needs to hire someone who not only has ties to the program but he has to make sure he gets his biggest bang for his buck. I just don't see Horner getting with his limited coaching background. Sure, all of these coaches have to get their start but to all of a sudden be an assistant in the Big 10 is a bit of a stretch to warrant bringing in Horner ...

I don't know if who they will hire and I am not saying they should hire Horner. I don't think many of you understand the hiring process of assistant coaches. In every sport at the college level former players come back to coach at the alma maters with NO experience. Having experience will not matter in this hire. For this type of position the candidate's personality and desire will be what is hired. :)

stokes is a great guy but doesn't do any coaching at Kwood so i am not sure that we would want him at Iowa. I think i would rather have coaches with experience and a history instead of giving a former hawk a job.

yeah. i mean he doesn't do a whole lot of coaching for being a coach. he taught some post moves and that was about it. Wags & Pint do all the coaching. So i hope he doesn't get a job at Iowa.
