Thoughts on game tonight

I've read enough about Fran throwing chairs, Barta throwing Fran under the bus and herby throwing the big JD (Delany) testy email. This is a HUGE game tonight in West Lafayette.

- Mackey seems like another place we never play well. I remember Horner scorching them for something like 34 points back in 2006 the first game he got his knee brace off.

- Cant let them hit a couple 3's right away as their students are very close to the court and very into the game and that place could get loud.

- Hopefully May can duplicate the defensive effort he showed against Hummel in the first meeting. Let the others beat us, even though they did beat us last time, chances are they cant do it again.

- Gatens is playing the best basketball of his career, need another great all-around game from him.

- Hopefully Basabe can get a couple garbage buckets or easy putbacks before the first TV timeout. An active Basabe is huge for us tonight.

Iowa MVP tonight: Devyn Marble- 17 points, 7 reb, 6 assists and 3 steals

Iowa- 78

Purdue- 67

Game is closer than the final score but we make our free throws down the stretch to widen the gap.

I would be surprised if the Hawks didn't leave it all out on the floor tonight since they get a good long rest when it is over. Sure they just did that Saturday which worries me a little but suck it up you are young.:) You are right this would be a huge win as 4-3 sounds a hell of a lot better than 3-4. Then they get a break and a little break in the schedule down the stretch. I know I'm jacked to watch it.

Purdue shot lights out last time and it was still close. I like our chances and will be watching for White and McCabe tonight. They've played very well since getting their haircuts:)

Depends on how its officiated. If the officials let Purdue grab and hold on defense like they usually do, Iowa will struggle. Hopefully Iowa D's up the same way on the other end if thats how its being called. I do think Iowa has better players and I think in IC, Iowa let some average Purdue players get some offense, which cost them the game. Iowa wins this one.

We need to defend better than last game and attack the hoop like last game. If we do we win.

It's just great that we can discuss the keys to winning a game on the road against Purdue. 30 days ago this was not a realistic discussion.

I'm not sure I can predict a W in this game, but I do like our chances. Iowa is a better team than it's been the past few years, and Purdue not quite as good as they have been. So it wouldn't shock me if it's close.

my thoughts exactly

This game will be the indicator of whether or not we are on the bubble.

Purdue is beatable and are currently sitting at #7 in the Big10 power rankings (Iowa is #8). I don't see Iowa or Purdue finishing in the top 6 of the conference but its probable that the Big10 will get 7 in the tournament this year.

If we lose then Purdue is in the drivers seat for the final conference bid (if the Big gets 7 in) as they will have won both head-to-head meetings. Yes NW and Minny still have a shot of moving up the rankings but NW has 7 road games remaining and two of their home games are against top 20 teams. Minny only has 5 road games remaining but they play five ranked teams. We have 6 road games remaining and only play 2 ranked teams (IU twice and Illinois).

This is the game of the season boys.

Barta is a tool...really annoyed with.....oh wait wrong thread.

I think the Hawks will be playing some Bob Marley in the locker room after this game.

Redemption time hawks win by 7. GO HAWKS!

Interestingly enough the game line is Iowa +10.5 That's a pretty big number considering we've already won on the road twice in conference and PU is 1-2 in their last three games.

Hawks should have some confidence after the last game, and it took some ice-cold shots by Hummel down the stretch (and a handful of Hawkeye defensive lapses) for Purdue to win in Carver.

BUT...

The Wisconsin and Minnesota surprises didn't suddenly make it easy to go on the road, especially in the middle of the week.

Purdue 81, Iowa 73; could go either way down the stretch, though.

i think we need to put wax on balls and pull them out and screams like in 40 yrs old virgin. that would wake us up and play better.

I predict Fran will do a Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka flying leap off the scorer's table, with an elbow to the head of Ed Hightower at 10:50 left in the first half. The team will be so inspired and go on to win by 8. Afterwards, Fran will say that the good refs, of which he thinks Ed is one, will not hold this against him or the program. Further, since Barta did not define his line, Fran will suggest that he thought the Barta's line involved picking up objects and throwing them, not throwing himself, so he will not offer an apology.

Hawks are big underdogs on ''Jimmy Buffett Nite'' at Mackey Arena... at least 11 pts,as much as 13 pts.
Purdue had won 26 straight at home until last thursdays loss to Wisky, 5th longest streak in the country. Will they lose 2 in a row? Highly unlikely, especially with a 5 day layoff to prepare for Iowa.

Iowa hung in there vs Purdue at home due to 28 trips to the line vs only 8 for PU.
I doubt Iowa will get the benefit of the calls in Mackey.
So, the key for Iowa could be adjusting to the refs, unlike at MSU,where Iowa did not match physicality of Sparty.
John Hart and Byrd really hurt Iowa at Carver with 4 of 6 3-pointers. Byrd has gone off of that performance to play strong offensively ever since. Must guard him at the arc.
In fact, the Hawks have got to get in the grill of Ryne Smith,Hummel,Byrd, and Hart at the arc,and make the rest of them beat us out there.

A Hawkeye win would be more improbable than the Wisky and Minny road wins,as Purdue is a much tougher venue on this nite with students in full throat, fueled by umbrella drinks for Buffett nite. This is a big test of Iowa's poise, and maturity. I doubt the Hawks can pull it out,but if they did, it would be the biggest win of the year by far. And yes, it could propell Iowa to a strong second half, that could put them on the edge of the bubble at years end...which would be a miracle, and should win Fran Coach of the Decade consideration.
