Thoughts, Observations on New Spring Depth Chart

Good stuff, Rob. No surprise that our lines are the biggest question marks, and we live and die by our line play. I hope we're all pleasantly surprised.

Yea Defensive line is big question as well as RB depth. But QB will be the biggest difference. I am not convinced at all that Petras is the answer

We may have the smallest OL in all of college football. Including divisions 2 and 3.

I haven't seen a line where all five players are under 300 lbs, here or anywhere else, since the Fry era.

Secondary will be our strength. Not worried about them much. D in general should be solid. But our DTs hopefully will put on a few more LBs. Dline will have 3 new faces starting and playing alot so there's certainly some Qs there.

I hope to see a lot more of Campbell and Jacobs on the field. Those two are tall long fast athletic LBs. Benson isn't bad either. Kinda stinks we'll be playing so much of that Cash position. All 3 of those dudes can be pretty impactful I bet. But with more and more teams putting 3 or 4 WRs on the field every play it is what it is.

I wonder what young WRs will get in the mix. The guys we do have coming back are all 6'0 or shorter. I'd have to think one of taller younger guys will get in there some.

It's Plumbs time at tackle I'm excited for him to take that bull by the horns. New Oline coach will have his work cut out for him some but thankfully Linderbaum is back and that's as great a starting point as he could have.

I guess I'm in the camp that it's Petras job and he'll take the first snap next yr. Will he keep the job? How will the other 2 guys look and can they push him for the gig? I don't think Petras played well enough that he should just be cemented in it. He needs to be more accurate all around. It's pretty much that simple for him.

Phil Parker is now an elite defensive coordinator. He's proven on a yearly basis he can dial up as tough D. I expect this year's D to be tougher than nails.

There seem to be a lot of young WRs on the roster. I hope some of them develop and contribute.

Petras should really come into his own this year. I expect a good year from him.

Parker is the most under rated DC assistant coach in college football hands down. It's pretty crazy honestly that he's never really talked about as the best or even on the list but that is how he likes it though. Just wish he'd get more of the credit he deserves. He took over for Norm and only kept building off of that success and evolving with the times . We aren't even a 4-3 cover 2 team most of the time anymore. He has a 5th db on the field almost all the time now and mixes things up a lot more then people realize with different pressures and how the Dline rushes. It's way more nuanced then some realize.

Hope you're right about Petras it's kinda the fork in the road season for him. If he's going to take that step up this is it. If he's similar to what he was last yr the first 3 or 4 games that'll just open the floodgates to a lot of folks wanting the other guys to get a shot..

Compare that to Wisconsin who never seems to have an OL under 320. I would be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about our offensive line's size.

A zone blocking scheme doesn't require as much bulk as a drive blocking team. There is an argument that our line has been a bit heavy the last few years and our stretch runs have suffered because of it. That all said, how a 6'7 kid who has been on campus for 3 years is not at 300 pounds is puzzling.

I am much more concerned about the size of our DL. One guy above 280 in the entire 2 deep? I fear that group could get overmatched. Small, little experience, little depth. That is where my worries would be if I was KF.

Is it just a coincidence that the smallest lines any of us can remember is happening a year after Doyle is bounced?

Yeah, but as you said earlier, secondary is our strength. It is crazy to think that even when we play 5 DBs, we still might be leaving a potential NFL guy off the field (Xavior Williams).

The back-7 is crazy deep and talented. I actually like the idea of Campbell at DE, which is probably just stupid talk because he is our best LB.

Yeah well Parker can be creative. He had him rush off the edge a few times in passing situations last yr I think. That's the great thing about having versatile players you can have them do different things and lineup in different places situationally and just keep offenses struggling to figure out what your doing. Parker has been a lot less predictable lately. He's had Dbs and safeties blitzing more now and then. The more you can sprinkle in stuff the better.

Just remember. If you come to a fork in the road, take it.

Doesn't necessarily mean we will get pushed around. Leg and upper body strength.

W. C. Fields: "It's time to take the bull by the tail...and face the situation."
