Thoughts, Observations on New Spring Depth Chart

Wins against teams named Penn State and Wisconsin.

Nate Stanley - 0 Wins in 6 Games
Spencer Petras - 2 Wins in 2 Games

I think the kids earned the job right now. I would be shocked if he isn't the starter...shocked. He needs to be more relaxed and work on accuracy...but he made some great throws in big moments last year. Played really well against Penn State on the road.

I will go on record and say if we would have had three warm up games prior to Purdue and NW...we win the West.

Oh I agree. We know KF's teams usually start slow for whatever the fudge the reason is and last year was no different except that the first two games were in the conference.

This year that Indiana game looms huge to start the season as they all count in the conf standings

Those weren't the same PSU/Wisky teams that Petras beat either to be fair. I didn't see that Barkley RB out there last yr jumping over and around and through us. Wisky was a shell of themselves last yr. I'm tickled as hell we beat them don't get me wrong. I'm just a realist and he'll have to show me still. I'm willing to let him do that. There's little doubt he'll take the first snap this yr. But if he struggles early like he did last yr the few folks rumbling about a QB change will get louder.

Wow...unfortunately...you play the team that is on the field....otherwise...you could never enjoy any win. Well...that wasn't the Juice William's Illinois team we beat...we can't take credit for that. See what I'm saying. Wisconsin's defense was solid. Penn State lost their first 5 ( a squeaker to Indiana who was a very good team, to Ohio State, Nebraska a game where they spotted them 21 points and almost won)...Penn State won their last four after our game...just saying.

I said I'm glad as hell we beat them finally. It'd been awhile and there's no apologizing for the wins at all. That's not what I'm saying. I'm just saying that Stanley wishes he'd have gotten to play against those 2 versions of them as opposed to the ones he went up against. And Petras to me hasn't exactly taken the bull by the horns just yet. I hope he does. But he's got some more proving yet to do. His leash won't be as long this yr as it was last yr...

Maybe a better way to think about this...it is not about beating a specific team (Wisc or PSU), it is about beating the best teams on our schedule. In many of the recent years that has been Wisc or PSU...but last year it was NW, and we lost to them.

I don't think we should pin wins or losses on the QB, that is about the whole team. But I think it is fair to point out that the coaching staff has not been able to consistently beat the top teams standing between them and a division title for 5 years running. I think we have gotten closer each year, and I think a great performance from the QB this year, with some more Phil Parker magic along the DL, can get us there. Hopefully the right guy emerges, whomever that may be.

And another point worth making...Stanley did play against a Wisconsin team like that in 2018, and he played pretty well (aside from one notable 4Q miss on a wide-open crossing Hockenson). But 2 special teams TOs killed us, along with Wisky killing us in situational execution.

Yeah that was the Shaun Beyer mess up... Had that not happened I liked our chances we shot ourselves in the foot that game

Funny...you guys seem to forget at game three years ago at Penn State? Stanley single handedly cost the team that game. It was by far his worst performance as a Hawk. That Penn State team was outplayed and we got beat because Stanley was terrible.

Let me help with the visual...Hockenson running down the middle of the field with no one within 25 yards of him after a 3rd and short fake...Stanley overthrew him by 20 yards. He missed wide open guys all night. Then...let's remember the goal line flub that cost the game...no timeout...no taking charge...no throwing it away...instead he threw it to Penn State while his receivers are still on the LOS.

Stanley had plenty of opps to beat Wisconsin and Penn State...he couldn't do it because he didn't make enough plays and the team didn't make enough plays. I'm not trying to bag on Nate...he was a solid QB and had a great career...and he certainly represented the University in an exemplary manner. Good dude.

Let’s make a deal. For one week, no re-hashing of past failures as if they have any cause/effect relationships to success or failure next season. We will play how we play. And how Nate Stanley played against PSU or WI will have zero impact when we play Indiana in Sept. we can yell and scream, positive or negative, or in between, after every single game next Fall. I don’t give a tinker’s damn about what happened years past. Waste of time.

What does Ind. have returning? What did they lose?

Their starting qb who was playing well but hurt his knee later in the year is coming back, very athletic and fast, not a super accurate passer but works well with their receivers. They throw a lot of jump ball type passes. Their top receiver could be coming back because remember they can all come back.

In some ways every team could have everyone come back.

Their defense was pretty good.

The hawks can beat them especially at kinnick

One week huh...seems a bit excessive...but I'll try for ONE WEEK.

Here the thing that bothers me about all the Petras criticism. Ok, so he looked out of sorts at times during the 6 game winning streak...and made some head scratcher throws/decisions. It happened...it was uncomfortable...and it sent the mind to those immediate judgemental thoughts about...this is not the guy.

Well...his numbers are similar from a completion percentage to what Stanley put up. He won six in a row...and 6-2 is similar to where Stanley would be. Are we being more critical of Petras because Stanley looked better while throwing incompletions to wide open guys? The result is the same...Spencer just didn't look as good getting the same result?

Yeah, I not sure about all the Petras bitching as he was probably 20 years old or so and in his first season. He didnt lose us the Purdue game last year and in the 2nd half he didnt have the protection to lead us back or win it.

Having him throw 50+ passes against jNW was just a bad game plan or something weird??
