Thoughts after Minnesota

#2 McDonough vs #1 Sanders

MCD has the upper hand in past matches but this year I think Sanders is a different wrestler and its showing in his previous matches this year. He is 19-0 and #1 in the country! Steele to a lot of Iowa fans hasn’t live up to his expectations but he still is one of the best Iowa wrestlers EVER. His winning percentage speaks for itself and I think fans just expect more from him and that’s a lot of pressure! I think his is going to be a tough match for MCD and I am a man of trends and I think MCD wins this one in a close match. MCD has only lost once in carver and don’t see it happening again. MCD increases his record to 22-1

If you watched this match it wasn't close at all. Steele controlled basically everything the whole match. He looked great on his feet and on top riding the dog out of Sanders. Sanders looked sluggish but I am hoping it just looks that way because MCD is that much better. He was back to his old ways and really should of got more points. Loved seeing MCD run off the mat and Sanders slooooowing walking across carver half dead.

HE'S BACK

#4 Ramos vs #7 Chris Dardanes

Dardanes is a wrestler a lot of fans haven’t heard about or know a lot about but he has a win over Steiber who we all know is a stud and comes into this match with a 17-4 record. Ramos is unbelievable at Carver and again see the crowd getting behind him in this match. Ramos is explosive when he wants to be and when he is aggressive and takes a lot of shots he has the ability to beat anyone in the country. I think this will be another tough match for the hawks but see Ramos winning by decision and also increasing his record to 21-2.

Dardanes i think wrestled a smart match against ramos. Ramos looked lost on his feet at times and shocked he wasn't taken down multiple times from some of those fakes Chris was doing. Ramos is Ramos and he did what it took to win the match. I think Ramos needs to look at every match like the oliver match I have a bad feeling he might over look someone.

#3 Marion vs. # 14 Nick Dardanes

Minnesota has been wrestling Dardanes and Lange this season with Nick getting the starting spot against the hawks. Marion to me is the tornado roller coaster at Adventureland. You want to believe the roller coaster is going to get you to the end but it has a few rough spots along the way that can make you think different and want to close your eyes. His record is 18-2 which obviously isn’t bad but it doesn’t seem like he has only two loses on the year. Marion I feel relies on his high crotch to much which he is amazing at but he needs to open up more from the beginning. Don’t leave matches up to the third period the third period is where Iowa wrestlers should be opening the gap. Dardanes could surprise Marion with a tough match here he has a 14-4 record. I do believe Marion is the decision here while having carver on the seat of their chair the whole match.

Well my prediction was pretty much spot on here. Marion doesn't open up his offense enough and its gonna bite him in the butt if he waits til the third period. Once again hit a high crotch and any of the top wrestlers are going to be able to stop this if he soley relies on it. Marion is a roller coaster and will continue to be one. Is it just me or does his body language look like he doesn't want to be out there?

149
Mike Kelly vs #11 Dylan Ness

The one thing I think we as Iowa fans got out of the Penn State dual is how Kelly wrestled the whole match. The takedown towards the end of the match gave me some hope for this kid. Apparently his work ethic is giving him a bigger tank than most guys in the country. Ness holds a 13-5 record and squeaks into the rankings around 10-15 range in my eyes. Kelly is only going to get better and I look for him take the Molinaro match and build from it. I think his confidence is going to continue to grow and think he wins a big match here that will be needed! Kelly gets his record to 13-7.

Mike Kelly had his chance to step up and didn't. This was a big let down for me. Just when I was seeing the upside he gets majored. Nothing more on him

157
Nick Moore vs Alec Ortiz

As carver is rocking their home town boy gets to wrestle basically a fill in Alec Ortiz who is 11-6 on the year. Moore to me gets the night off here from a top ranked wrestler and better perform or Brands and Co or Fans are gonna lose it. This shouldn’t be a tough match as Moore has wrestled all tough competition and his gas tank and confidence should be much higher than Mr. Ortiz. I see this as a decision for Moore and increasing his record to 11-7

Perfect match for Moore and like I said in my prediction I believe it was his gas tank that made the difference. These bonus points were huge for Moore and the hawks. Again this match should of gone this way and while I have nothing but positive things to take away from this match he just isn't on the level as ranked kids are at this weight. I think it was a mistake to have DSJ wrestle already and hope he gets to 100% soon!

165
#6 Mike Evans vs. #11 Cody Yohn

This is a big match for Mr. Evans he HAS to have a win if he wants a shot at the big tens. Cody is a wrestler that has the potential to make noise but holds a 13-5 record on the year. I can’t stress how big of a match this is for him and hope he watches some film on Yohn and finds out his weaknesses. As I typed this up I really didn’t see this dual going this way but I have gone back and forth and feel confident that Evans gets a decision here putting the hawks up 18-0! Some will think this is a for sure win for Evans but I just didn’t see it like when first going over these lineups. Evans makes his record 19-4

This was a great great match for evans and won us the dual. Falls are so big in D1's! Evans was prepared to wrestle Yohn and it was great to see. Evans has lost some matches this year that he probably shouldn't have but its only making him a better all around wrestler.

174
#9 Ethan Lofthouse vs #7 Logan Storley

If your anything like me Ethan has been a bit of let down so far at 15-5 but again Brands and Co is getting these boys ready for March so I am going to keep some confidence in this young man. Storley is 16-3 this year and has some impressive wins that will give him great confidence going into this match. I don’t see Ethan beating Storley at all.

Ethan did wrestle Storley better than I thought and I was just hoping he could hold him close to not give up the major. Storley wrestled ALL three periods and that was the difference. He kept attacking and attacking and it ended with his hand being raised in the end. So once again he gave us hope then the let down. Move on to the next dual

184
Vinnie Wagner vs #8 Kevin Steinhaus

Wagner has been wrestling great and just like Kelly I was impressed with how he wrestled at Penn State. Wagner to me deserves a big win but don’t see it happening again Steinhaus. Steinhaus holds a 18-4 record and comes up with a major against Wagner. Wish we could see a rematch with Gambrall oh well!

Steinhaus is a great wrestler and ended up with the major as predicted. His defense is either really good or Iowa wrestlers just can't take this guy down! Wagner is a hole in the lineup and I hope we get 184 and 197 figured out soon.

197
GG vs #6 Sonny Yohn

GG while I want to believe he has the strength to handle 197 I just don’t see it and we as fans will see this affect him the most against Yohn. Yohn is going to be a beast compared to GG. GG won’t be able to finish any shots if he can get even in a leg. I remember uncle Luke having a tough time with Yohn well all of his oppenents while on the legs. Yohn is 16-3 on the season and see him getting a decision for the gophers

GG wrestled a great match you can see he is really trying to work on his outside shots because going underneath a 197lber is clearly a bad idea for him. I was impressed with GG's gas tank and think GG can actually beat Yohn if they wrestle again. Hopefully they won't wrestle again because it looks like GG is on his way down to 184. He was clearly smaller than Yohn. For a tournament team GG has to be at 184

HWT
Blake Rasing or Bobby Telford vs #4 Tony Nelson

This is an interesting matchup because the Hawks would already have the dual locked up at this point but Bobby hasn’t been wrestling up to Brands liking and Blake has a win over Tony who is 17-2 this season. My hope for one the dual goes the way I have predicted and two that he puts Blake out there and gives him the confidence he will need to be our guy at HWT. No one can tell me who they want at HWT and I believe this could be the game changer for the rest of the season. Why not put Rasing out there who has a win over Tony? I think at the end of the day he puts Telford out there and Tony wins by decision but Iowa gets the W.

Well they ended up sending razor out there which i think was the right decision. telford lost to a naia wrestler on saturday who is good i won't take anything away from the kid but if telford is our #1 guy he shouldn't be losing to him. Rasing looked like a different wrestler this time against Tony and its sad to see the lack of progression from an Iowa wrestler. Clearly the hawks need to get some bigger coaches in the room or more bodies at these weights!

in the end THANK YOU Mr. Evans

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The University of Iowa wrestling team defeated No. 3 Minnesota, 19-17, Sunday afternoon inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes won five of the first six matches and used bonus points from redshirt freshmen Nick Moore and Mike Evans to hand Minnesota its first conference loss.

Moore scored an 11-2 major decision over Alec Ortiz at 157 to give the Hawkeyes a 13-4 lead and Evans followed with a third period pin at 165 to extend the Hawkeye lead to 19-4. The bonus-point wins proved to be the difference in the final score. Minnesota (9-3, 6-1) rallied and finished the dual with four straight wins but was unable to close the gap.

"The first thing is, this is a team win," said head coach Tom Brands. "Regardless of how pretty it is, it's 5-5, it's a team win. Sometimes you have to give credit for a team win, and I don't do a good job of giving team credit. There's a big team here and sometimes when you're in a fire fight, you have to give credit where credit is due."

Junior Matt McDonough set the stage for the dual when he scored a 7-1 decision over top-ranked Zach Sanders at 125. McDonough scored a takedown in the final minute of the first period and added a reversal to open the second frame, building a 4-0 lead. After a Sanders escape, McDonough added another takedown to build a 6-1 edge before riding out the Gopher for the entire third frame, adding a final point for riding time (2:56).

Tony Ramos and Montell Marion backed up McDonough with consecutive decisions at 133 and 141. Ramos started the scoring with a second-period escape and added a takedown with three seconds on the clock to build a 3-0 lead entering the third. Minnesota's Chris Dardanes then cut the lead to 3-2 with a reversal before Ramos escaped to extend his lead to 4-2. He finished the match with 1:03 of riding time to earn the 5-2 decision.

Marion extended the Hawkeye lead to 9-0 with a 3-2 decision over Minnesota's Nick Dardanes. Marion scored a third-period escape to tie the frame, 1-1, before scoring a takedown with 49 seconds on the clock to build a 3-1 advantage. Dardanes added an escape to make the score 3-2, but Marion held on for the victory, the 80th of his career (80-19).

Minnesota's Dylan Ness cut the team lead to 9-4 with a 15-7 major decision over Michael Kelly at 149 before the Hawkeyes answered with consecutive bonus-point wins.

Moore scored a pair of takedowns at 157 and added three nearfall points to build a 7-1 first period lead against Alec Ortiz. He then rode the Gopher the length of the second period to take a six-point advantage into the third period, where he added one escape, a point for stalling and another takedown to build a 10-1 advantage. He surrendered a late escape but piled up 3:26 of riding time to earn the final 11-2 decision.

Evans kept the Hawkeyes rolling and scored what would eventually become the difference in the match when he flattened Cody Yohn in 6:02. Evans built a 7-0 lead entering the third period before he turned a half-nelson into three nearfall points and secured his sixth pin of the season.

"When Nick went out there and got bonus points, that pushes me," said Evans. "It makes me think I've got to get bonus points too. I think we rolled well off each other."

Trailing 19-4, Minnesota mounted its rally with four straight wins starting at 174. Sophomore Ethen Lofthouse had built a 3-0 advantage before giving up a late second period takedown and surrendering a reversal 40 seconds into the third frame. Minnesota's Logan Storley then rode out the period and earned a point for stalling to finish with a 5-3 win.

Minnesota then cut the team lead to 19-11 when Kevin Steinhaus recorded a 12-4 major decision over Vinnie Wagner at 184.

Iowa's Grant Gambrall had a chance to clinch the dual when he took a 3-2 lead into the third period at 197, but Minnesota's Sonny Yohn tied the match with an early escape and secured the win with a takedown in the final 10 seconds to earn a 5-3 win and trim the Iowa lead to 19-14.

The dual ended in Iowa's favor when Tony Nelson was unable to score bonus points against Iowa's Blake Rasing at 285. Rasing had never lost to Minnesota's fourth-ranked heavyweight, but Nelson was able to score a pair of takedowns and accumulate 1:22 of riding time en route to a 7-2 victory.

The Hawkeyes (10-3, 5-2) return to the mat Sunday, Feb. 5, at 1 p.m. (CT) when Wisconsin visits Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The contest will be broadcast by AM-800 KXIC and streamed online at btn.com and hawkeyesports.com via Hawkeye All-Access.
NOTES: Attendance was 9,511... Iowa has won its last seven duals against Minnesota... Iowa has won 19 straight Big Ten duals inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena... Tony Ramos is undefeated in 14 matches inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

McD completely dominated that match. 3:00 of riding time against the "#1". Great way to start the meet and get the crowd going!

It looks like Marion just woke up when he walked on and off the mat. I don't know if it's his personality or if he's just not interested. I think he'll come to around Big 10s and D1s.

I love Evans! That kid is going to be a national champion before he's done here. He is always moving forward, being the aggressor. I love his attitude.

Steinhouse = stud.

All in all, I thought it was a pretty good dual and I'm glad we squeaked it out.

let me start off by saying i will eat the crow that was my prediction of Moore losing and GG getting Majored by Yohn. Both wrestled well above what i expected. I also thought GG looked very lean for 97. I agree with pin and told someone a few weeks back that MM just looks like he could careless. I was disappointed in Ethan. My prematch thoughts were that he wrestles well at home and if Evan's had a big win, which he did, that Ethan would ride the wave of emotion to victory. I guess the wave crashed a little early.

I feel that over all we wrestled harder that in previous weeks. If you put together all of the what if's with this years team, we could be a special year but i am afraid there are to many of them. such as if St J. will get 100%, if Byers was wrestling 97, if GG was at 84 (which he mayb), what if MM wrestled like it was his last year. I know a few are a bit far fetched, but most what if's are.

It was a good day to watch our Hawks beat the gophers. Favorite quote of the Day, my son who is a senior at Iowa came and sat with us and he told us that on his way in he ran into a gopher fan who told him "I Just got thrown OAT of the Meet". Loved it!

Pin, I have the same concerns you do in regard to Ramos and MM specific to the Big 10 tourney and Nationals this year. Either one could make it all the way to the finals or get beat out in the 2nd rd or Qtrs.
I honestly have no idea what's going on with MM. If the high crotch is not there then he is not going to shoot. Can't figure out why he is not doing single/double legs or ankle picks. Hopefully he'll get it figured out prior to Big 10s.

I'm still concerned about Ramos if he faces a wrestler who is a dominant rider.

GG definitely looked much better yesterday. He will be very competitive again if/when he gets back to 184.

I don't think Ramos has an issue, i think you guys just don't respect Dardanes for how good he is. That kid is a stud. People talked about Devin Carter being the strongest 133 in the nation earlier adn that is false. Carter might have the most powerful hips, but Dardanes is a beast. I thought Tony wrestled a good match considering how powerful Dardanes' hand fighting is. It's not easy to score on a guy like that at all. Don't forget get, he has beat Steiber this year. He's the real deal.
yeah dominant riders give Ramos some trouble, but that's been the case from day 1. 133 is deep. any one of the could lose in the quarters. My opinion about Ramos hasn't changed at all.

I agree. No need to panic about Ramos. He's a top 5 wrestler at a very tough weight. Very few easy matches from here to the end of the season

I actually think both Dardanes and Steiber are studs and agree that 133 is wide open at both Big 10's and Nationals. I think the only way Ramos gets beat is if he gets matched up with a good rider such as Steiber and is unable to escape.

I think i was giving Chris more respect than lots of ppl

but i don't think anyone can disagree with me about how he looked on his feet. against oliver he was pressing action and controlling ties and against chris it was not there

Marion should of been tagged with another stall call with 10 sec. left in the match when he went backwards on the whistle.Ethan giving up a takedown with 10 sec. left in period.Gambrall to small needs to be at 184.Long haul before Big 10's.Need to clean some things up.JMO

Ramos possibly getting beat the second round? Must not have much confidence in Ramos. Marion, maybe.
