This Years Ferentz?

I think most coaches are confident and relaxed before the season starts. This time of year, everyone's undefeated.

Let's see if we are saying the same thing about KF in late October (I hope so).

I still laugh at those that were shocked after last season. Kirk comes out preseason and before the games even started brings up the fact that last years team was the most inexperienced he'd ever had and one of the youngest, throw in new coordinators and that's not exactly a recipe for success. But then a good amount of the fanbase plays the "we play our best football when we're under the radar" and expect everything to be ok and are then outraged when it didn't go as planned. That said, I think Kirk seems confident and laid back because after 9 months of having to relive how bad of a season it was he gets the opportunity to be 0-0 and kickoff a new season to escape the past.

At least now the fanbase has come down to earth and realized that this year's team isn't "under rated" and is off the radar for a reason. Now we get to see what transpired to the young and inexperienced team that took the field last year. I think they'll be better, not expecting BCS or anything like that, but there may be some suprises now that they don't have all the expectations on them and have been seen as who they truly are vs. what most of us wanted them to be last year.

Another explanation is that he knows he has unlimited job security, even if he goes 4-8 again. The university literally can't afford to fire him. If I was in a similar situation, I would sleep until noon every day and schedule video game breaks for every hour on the hour.
And, therein lies the real issue: You, and probably others, would use job security as a reason to under perform and essentially take time off; the assumption that KF, or even the majority of people in this world would react as such, is a serious error in judgment. I happen to firmly believe that job security is a motivator to do your best; but, obviously you favor the lazy, negative, impact of said security. Have a good life.

You must have cleaned up in Vegas knowing that we were going to go 4-8 last year. LOL

not sure of OOTH was trolling or not, but i kind of agree with his line of thinking. maybe KF has taken a less hands-on approach with things and its allowed him to relax a little bit. i hope he's letting GD do what he wants with the offense and he just hangs back and watches more

No not trolling in this. I think this is the most change we have seen out of KF. The real test will be seeing a couple close games and how the staff handles it. Mistakes will be made lets just hope that its not the same ones.

I know most think KF is untouchable but I think his seat got plenty hot. We have no idea what the people with the money are saying for sure. Golfer doesnt count.

LOL by no means was I expecting 4-8, but at the same time I wasn't under the impression that because the media didn't have such big expectations and Kirk playing the inexperienced card before the season began that we were going to contend for a championship.

I honestly believe that there are some fans out there that as soon as a down season is projected feel that we're suddenly in title contention as a result of it, because we're now "under the radar" and a fires been lit. I just don't buy the mentality that Iowa plays its best football on a national stage the years it's under the radar. I think we've succeed in the past in that situation, but we're under the radar for a reasaon based on the assumption that it could be a rough year or things aren't necessarily in our favor.

I guess everybody is different, but I completely disagree with this. I don't mean to make blanket statements about ALL people, but I think in general, people are more focused and more intense when they have to go out and earn their keep, aren't being guaranteed anything, and know that if they don't get it done, there might not be another opportunity.

On the flip side, when you know you have a job and are getting a paycheck no matter what, can you say the same thing? Some people are naturally hard workers and give 100% no matter what (maybe you are like that doclee, and that's a great attribute), but I happen to believe it's human nature to reach for that little bit extra deep down inside when it's time to "do or die" more so than if you're in a comfort zone and nothing or no one is challenging you, or threatening to take away what you have. I don't think that has anything to do with being "lazy" or "negative".

Without any real motivation or some sort of fire lit under you, do most people give 100%? I mean you might THINK you are, but are you REALLY? I have my doubts about that.

Just my 2 cents.

Anybody else notice he seems a bit more comfortable this year than in recent past years? He seems a little more at ease when interviewed. He doesn't seem to have the "sense of urgency" that you would expect, especially when it's a must year for a successful team. This is good, IMO. He might know that he has a good team or at least better than what pundits out here expect. This is going to be a fun season & I think they surprise. He just seems calmer. That's all!
I thought everybody knew that kf took a head coaching make over course over the off season. That's why he seems so relaxed.

No, the soviets tried that and it didn't work out so well. Most people have to earn job security and keep earning it. This goes for business to. YOu have to earn business and keep earning it.

Of course, you could also get a multi-year contract with a multi-million dollar buyout to get job security. It's not Barta's money anyway.

So are you a communist or not? lol

I dont remeber anyone saying that. I remember people saying this is the easiest schedule in the modern era of hawkeye football and just about any team in the country should get no less than 7 wins.

Last year was an complete failure. Period.
