This year still up in the Air but Next Year

We really need to win at least 2 of the final 4 and I think we can, but if Basabe is the difference what happens when we lose Marble next year? Without them we are a second division team this year. So who steps up? I really thought Uhtoff would be a major factor late in this year but so far it hasnt happened. I just dont see anyone on this team or an incoming player able to fill those gaps? We have some good players, but you really need someone who can take a team on his shoulders. Thats been Marble at times this year. Next year?

I don't think losing Marble hurts the team as much as we think it does. He has been below average many more times this year than he has been good. I feel as if sometimes he ruins team chemistry with his inability to hit the open man and turnover the ball in the lane. No offense to him but if you shoot 20 shots a game you need to be scoring 30 points. He only scores 20 so a 1:1 ratio which is not good. I think his loss with be negative in a way but also brings a positive.

You're out of your mind if you don't think losing Marble will hurt. He's one of the few guys on the team who can create his own shot.

Disagree. He has a skill set that noone else on the team has. We're going to struggle next year without him and Basabe and I'd predict a second division finish unless Fran somehow gets a couple of athletic juco guys to come in here but who knows if that's even possible.

The offense will look different next year, but as a team, I feel that we may actually be better. No one can wait around for a marble bail out shot late in the shot clock.

Agree 100%. While it appears he takes so many shots as Waterboy indicated, how many of those are at the end of the shot clock when the ball ends up back in his hands because no one else will shoot. I get that his role is to be the #1 option, but the fact is the rest of the guys need to step up. I'm sorry but Marbles shot totals are going to be up when White has games like he did vs. Wescy and takes 5 total shots. IMHO Marble's shooting because no one else is.

I don't see how it can be said that he's "been below average many more times this year then he's been good". He's the only player in the B1G that has been in double figures every game this season. If the "been below average more than being good" criteria is accurate then we're in trouble as he is without a doubt one of our more consistent players and definitely not someone that I'd consider "below average" most nights.

I whole-heartedly disagree.

next year 9-9, maybe 10-8

the rotation will have to be cut down

jok or uhl will end up getting 15min/game -- best case scenario, both

starters: gesell-oglesby-woodbury-white-utoff

bench: clemmons-jok-olesani

deep reserves: meyer, ellingson

in the extremely unlikely event fran lands atwood, he'll be the first frontcourt reserve ahead of uhl; dickerson would get some time at the 1 and possibly the 2.

in the event fran doesn't get either (which is looking more and more likely, then any remaining 2014 signings would be deep reserves)

only going 8 deep next year looks likely, unless ellingson is a super sleeper surprise

you really can't be serious about this.

I've said before this year is THE year. I don't see us being as good next year. This is the year to make a run.

I agree... we needed this to be a springboard year for recuiting.

I think we will be a bubble type team next year. Next year I expect this to be Mike & Woody's team. They will be uppper classmen and I expect them to be the best 2 players.

I really worry about our defense next year. White isn't a terrific defender. Uthoff is long but misses blocking out assignments and I think will lack the quickness to stay in front of 3s and the same thing for Josh ogelsby and the 2s.

No no no. I never said losing Marble wouldn't hurt us. I agree it will but not as much as people making it out to be. But sometimes I do get tired of Marble trying to be the hero and not converting at the end of games and not hitting a wide open man on a drive because he wants the points. He just plays a little selfish to me at times. I do like his skill set tho.

Only problem with next year is who breaks down the D. Limit transition, put your best defender on gessell, get right in everybody else's shorts and take your chances. Nobody at this point requires help d.

I think Iowa will be about the same next year as they are now. Roughly about a .500 team in the conference. Middle of the pack. Hopefully Barta & Fran will put together a tough schedule because losses to good teams especially on the road/neutral sites don't hurt too much in the eyes of the selection committee.

What I don't care for is NO one is really developing for next year, outside perhaps Gesell.
White has taken a step back. Uthoff is lost right now (damn shame too). Clemmons gets no minutes, Jok sits. Who is going to pan out?

Marble is currently shooting .419% from the field. Not from 3, FROM THE FIELD. Some guys shoot that well from beyond the arc. If you put up that many shoots per game, some of them are bound to fall. He also averages 2 turnovers a game, and seems to have them at the worst times. I'll be glad to see somebody else get a chance at the end of games next season, because time and time again, Marble has proved that he is NOT clutch, whatsoever. The guy has never made a game-winning or trying shot at the end of regulation, but Fran keeps going to him at the end of games for some reason.

I know I'm not in the majority here, but I'm not that worried. I won't miss his terrible shooting percentage or terrible turnovers very much. At least somebody else will be given a shot, because Marble has proved that is just doesn't have it (being clutch).

Have to hope that some guys take some steps in the offseason. Many examples of guys across the country and a few at Iowa in which they don't contribute much over the course of a given season, work hard in the off-season, and are completely different players or very improved players the following year (Gabe & MG).
