This Week's Poll: The Most Painful KF Era Losses

Tolzein made some ridiculous completions in that 2010 game. I remember a couple of times our defense was right in his face and maybe even had their hands on him and he would sling some ridiculous pass and it would be complete.

I was at the wisky game also, you nailed, EVERYONE in the stands knew it was coming. We all said "watch the fake" cuz it was a perfect time to do it. Thats probably the angriest iv been at an iowa game. Uhg we shouldv won.

That was one of those games where everything happened in slow motion, you could see it coming a couple seconds before the players, KF’s calls were predictable, poor clock management at the end. On that 4th down, it was as if everyone knew what the outcome of the game would be as soon as that big-nosed punter starting running.

Wisconsin pretty much got every single bounce to go their way that day and Iowa had how many self inflicted wounds, botched xpoint, botched 23 yard fg, offsides on a kick that had UW buried rekicked and they returned it to the Iowa 45. You name it, Iowa did it that day. Then the Wisconsin center snaps it over Tolzien's head with Iowa still winning 30-24 despite all the **** ups. Tolzien, trying to throw the ball away as hes being pulled down, falls into a UW receiver's hands 10 yards downfield setting up the fake punt on 4th and 4.

2005 ISU. It was worse than the entire 2010 season combined. Coming off of that run of three straight top ten finishes, we were ranked pretty high going into the season. I thought that maybe, just maybe Iowa football had turned a corner and was going to take that jump from top tier Big Ten team to a nationally elite team. Drew Tate. Chad Greenway. Abdul Hodge. Man, we had some weapons. That game reminded me that while we can get some nice teams together and have decent runs when lady luck is on our side, we are just Iowa and we will never win a national title or Rose Bowl in my lifetime. That one stung.

i enjoyed that game immensely due to my severe dislike of Tate. I think he may be the only Iowa QB I dont like. As for the last sentence, I dont think you should dwell on that. You never know what can happen. 2005 was a nice assembly of talent. You just had a ******* QB. Its not impossible for Iowa to assemble a group like that again and take you to the top. KF has proven his ability to compete.

Tate was the least of the Hawks problems in 2005. He actually had better numbers that year than in 2004 when he led the Hawks to a share of the Big 10 Title.

The lack of a formidable defensive line was the main problem with that team. The offense performed above average that year.

Taking a knee at OSU when with the Rose Bowl on the line was difficult to stomach. It forever changed my expectations. Since that game I've accepted that the program, under current leadership, won't be a championship program. It will be a decent, hard working, developmental program that is capable of nice seasons and putting guys in the NFL - but it won't be a program the consistently delivers a kill shot in big spots.

agree 100% OldAlum remember telling the wife after that game, that KF and company will never play for a NC, and the way I watch Iowa football now is different, and it sucks.

’04 Arizona State; remember sitting by myself in the bar watching this WHOLE game while all the other fans had stopped at the end of the 3rd quarter, the wife would come in every 5-10 minutes and ask "why are you still watching this game, it was over a long time ago". I told her that watching this makes all the good games that much better, but dam that was a long game.

This was a really tough poll for me. The three I went with I was all at (I reallly wanted to pick 4) are
1) jNW 09 worst for me by far, such pure disappointment when Stanzi went down. And JVB could do nothing.
2) OSU 09, I was there and the sheer excitement in me and the other Hawk fans around me when Iowa got the ball back with 50+ seconds was amazing, then only to sit on it and lose in overtime was gut wrenching. Rose Bowl bid on the line, doesn't get any bigger than that.
3) Wisky 10, just miserable. Don't even want to talk about it anymore.
4) ISU 02. I vividly remember being in the concourse at half time having a blast as the Hawks were up big. Then the 2nd half happened. It was terrible. Caught so much flak for the entire season from ISU fans. Very painful loss.

Dishonorable Mention: WMU in 07, also at this game, that was the most disgusted I have ever been with a Hawkeye football team. I chose not to renew my season tickets in 08 strictly because of that game and effort. I was disgusted with the program at that time.
Also as a previous poster mentioned the entire 2010 season was very painful. Especially with the expectations the team had, only to have them squashed by late comeback losses. That whole season was just brutal on Hawk fans.

I don't have a problem with taking a knee at the end of OSU game. Vandenberg had thrown 3 ints and nearly another one. What killed Iowa in that game was the dropped TD by Stross, they missed a freakin 22 yard FG, and the offense absolutely sucked in OT.

I did a similar thing. Sat in the bar late by myself watching every minute of that debacle. I was disappointed, and I watched for the same reason. It made the other wins that much sweeter. It was not a real painful loss for me though in my list. Disappointing for sure, painful not too bad.

I can see why that game is on there. We were playing for the Championship and we lost in OT because we played it safe.

There is no question that we had two undefeated teams if we dont blow the 2002 game to ISU and the '09 NW and Ohio St games. They were all tough to watch them lose games on this list they should have maybe easily won but:

The 3 mentioned above cost us two undefeated seasons, one big 10 championship, one rose bowl game, a possible NC game, and who knows what as far as cachet, publicity, recruiting.

Anybody else really hating this thread about now?

Yes definately. I emailed the poll to a bunch of buddies, and they are all responding with how this ruined their morning, etc. Every post I read upsets me and reminds me of these games. Oh well, there were obviously some good ones too. Remember the good, forget the bad. Its an interesting topic though.

^ correct, how can slickwillard bash on Drew Tate. He helped win a b1G championship and he had us in contention to win many more games that the coaching staff's conservative playcalling and defense lost.

Also, tate had a ton of balls dropped in 05 but especially in 06.

I think Drew Tate was very frustrated especially in 06 with the drops and the coaches conservative nature.

How would an interception in that final minute have been worse than an interception in OT? The risks of an interception didn't change by sitting on the ball. We faced all the same downside in OT, but we reduced the upside of having the ball last with a chance to win. It was a terrible decision strategically. And I also think it gave a psychological boost to OSU and a psychological blow to our team.

The other stuff you mention was also big, but it's easier to live with physical mistakes than mental ones. That's what made that one (and the Wisconsin loss) so painful.

Isn't Willard an ISU fan?
