This one is on the coaches!!

You said it "perfectly" and that's what that play has to be to work. I'll take a 40 footer over what we got how bout you?

McCabe throws that ball 2 feet shorter and you have Gatens with a wide open three point shot from the wing. I will take my chances with an allstate high school quarterback throwing a ball to Cole over a 40 ft desperation three pointer to end the game.

But if we get a few defensive stops, maybe foul a little sooner we wouldn't even have to have this discussion.

True..I guess I have just seen this play way too many times, not just by Iowa, and it ends up the same way most of the time. At least I know Iowa basketball is getting better because these losses are really getting me frustrated!

It is what it is. Are we really complaining about losing right now? Jesus Christ fellas', this is Frans first year at Iowa and it's not like we've been setting the world on fire unless you count the all-time loss record last year or the mass exodus from the basketball team every year.

It's his first year. Mistakes are going to happen. He is working with a below average talent pool in one of, if not the, toughest basketball conference.

If, If, If....if Gatens made the free throws; if Basabe didn't pick up his 4th; if we could actually figure out how to guard the 3; if Gatens would stop dribbling into the damn paint; if we had more offensive weapons...the list could go on and on. With the cards that Fran has been dealt I think he's done a pretty damn good job. And always remember that the two best players on the team were recruited by FRAN.

+10000000 I agree 100% it was minor miracle Iowa was even in the game!

I am not worried about the coaching at all.. I am worried about some of the players but I am not worried one bit about the Coach!

Don't get me wrong. I agree with you 100%. I think Fran is a great coach and is bringing this program back! I just hate that last play at the end of game. It pisses me off when i'm watching a game I could care less about too.

Excellent post, and the last sentence there is the most encouraging part. Fran just needs to add a couple more pieces and have a year or two to work with them and we should be in pretty good shape.

Would be nice if Basabe could stay out of foul trouble so he can stay on the court long enough to score 20+ and grab 10+ boards like he is capable of.

Cartwright was also a great find. There's no doubt in my mind that Fran will bump the level of talent enough from where Lick left it to at least make us respectable in fairly short order.

Yeah? Tell me this: how many plays, with 3 seconds to go, down 3, no timeouts and full length of the floor to go (against a press) have you seen work with any sort of consistency?

Oh, you mean a team in that spot will lose 9 times out of 10? What a shock. I knew if Thompson hit either free throw we were pretty much toast. McCabe's pass was off just enough. But that really wasn't too far away from being a great play. Hind sight is 20/20, but that pass was the right move on his part.

Think about it, hawkeyescott.

We are down by 4 with 37 seconds left, and we lost. And you are blaming the coaches, evidently, for not winning, when we are down by 4 with 37 seconds left. They may in fact be culpable, but not for not getting a W when down by 4 with 37 seconds left.

Guys, we all have to realize that WHATEVER we executed from the 37 second mark when down by 4, going forward the chances to win were less than 20%. So it is tough to hang that on the coaches, although I can understand someone being disappointed with the outcome and even some of the execution.

I think something we all need to keep in mind is that when you don't have top line talent it is even harder to have something work just perfectly for you at the end of a game. I will grant you we weren't playing a UNC or Duke, so our chances of getting great execution were better. But, how could anyone think, with 37 seconds left, that we had a better than 20% chance to win. And if that is the case, you can't hang the loss on the coaches, at least not if your claim is that they lost it in the last 37 seconds.

The fan base is passionate, and we are in fact mad because we are in games and can't get over the hump. But if we recruit two guys every year that have the same impact as Basabe and Cartwright, along with two other guys that we will get in a given recruiting class, then things are looking up. I am not limiting our recruiting potential to that, but if that is all it was, things would still be looking up. And we got those two guys with less than two months of recruiting, although obviously they recruited Basabe longer than two months. But we should be able to pull a guy like him to the Midwest, based upon what we did with him, as long as our coaches can recognize the right talent.

Here is to the years to come. Things are looking up. There is no getting around that. And how about some kudos to me for having a positive post instead of simply ripping a guy that was wrong in his original post:)

+1 this one is on the coaches? COME ON! this coaching staff should be commended for even having us in the game at the end or not killing a ref when they reward NW with a timeout when no one has possession, I hope Fran does not have a stroke during a game and kills himself before he can recruit some big ten talent. I still think we double our big ten wins next yr. baby steps

Fran and staff were coaching their butts off the entire game. Our prior coach would have just sat there. Heck, we didn't have a TO at the end because Fran had to take them all before that since our guys apparently couldn't remember that NU hit 15 threes the first time.

Not fouling with 37 seconds left didn't have much to do with us not winning, it may or may not have given us a chance. I have no problem in that situation just playing defense more aggressively for about 15-20 seconds trying to get a steal or turnover and if you foul because of your aggressiveness then so be it. Once it got down to under 20 seconds and you didn't get that Turnover then foul, which we did. 15 seconds left in a game is 3-4 possessions, that is plenty of time.

Hoping that NU missed free throws, which essentially is what the OP is saying, is not our coaches fault we lost.

Well maybe Fran should be fired then. After all, he has failed to take the worst team with the worst players in the Big 10 to title contention in one year.

Tell me....who should Barta hire to replace him?

I liked the last play...could have been Bryce Drew and Valpo all over again if the pass is a hair better.

The players did not execute the foul well with 37 seconds, but it is easy to see why...Thompson and Shurna are solid at the line. Cobb did touch it briefly with 26 seconds left, and they should have gotten to him.

Good comeback by the Hawks, and nothing new losing at Evanston...it sucks, but better days ahead with this coaching staff, and our young players.

I'm not sure if this is directed at me or not since I started this thread, but get back to me when you find the part where I said Fran should be fired instead of the part where I said I think he will turn this program around. You know, like it says in the first sentence of my orginial post, but hey don't read that, just read the title of the thread then comment.

It was one game that I felt the coaches (just like players) made a mistake, that's all.

I understand your original point to a degree, but to say it was on the coaches is not accurate at all. The players have a lot more blame than the coaches. It may have been a mistake at the end (which I don't believe it was) but that is just one play and whether it was wrong or not it didn't cost us the game.

There were many plays throughout the game that had an impact. Like how about the 8 3's in the first half we gave up cuz we helped off our man, which is not how we were suppose to play it,. That is the players fault but you can't say that that is what lost the game either.

My post was directed at no one in particular...just those whining and complaining about Fran...like they expect him to take Iowa from the absolute dregs to NCAA tourney contention overnight.

I'm just getting tired of the b*tching and moaning. And all the armchair coaches who seem to think they can do better.

Instead of bashing Fran now...let's see where the program is in February 2013.

Actually I kind of like the ******** and moaning, it means people care again. Now on the football side it does get old.

I wasn't bashing him, I just felt he made a mistake in not having his team foul earlier is all, that late in the game you don't have a lot of options on who to foul and can't be choosy. I didn't have a problem with them trying to get a turnover either, but if that hasn't happened within the first 10 seconds then foul. Anyway it is over and done with now, so on to Michigan.

If anything, Mel should have received the ball. I like Cole, but he doesn't have good hands.

Good play though, if Cole makes the catch, Iowa gets a good look.

I liked the call. It was there, just wasn't executed. Reminded me of what Valpo did (who knows how long ago) to win a game.
