Sure it will, because you'll be looking at a wholesale makeover of the team for next season. Lee won't be back next year, Ramirez has a player option at the end of this season, and this is the last year of Lilly's contract.
On the other hand, if they are in the race, I could see them making a move by renting Ben Sheets for a couple of months.

If Ben's having a good enough year, he'll already be a Yankee or Red Sox pitcher by the time the Cubs figure out that they need another arm...

The makeover was what I was referring to. It will also be interesting to see what young players they would deem ready to play.
I could see the player rental aspect if they are in the race as well. I am not a Sheets fan with his injury history, but he may be the best available. I don't want any of the good young prospects to be traded in a rental trade.

Neither am I, but it's not like the team would be locked into any long term commitment; he only signed a one-year deal with the A's anyway.
That's the thing, this is sort of a transition year for the team. They've got at least one big contract coming off the books next year, and possibly three. If they're out of it, they'll need to know what they have for next year before the end of this year. The problem with that is that it seems like this years team and last years team are very similar - just good enough to keep you interested, but not good enough where you think they might have a shot.

possible kerry wood from the indians? has had some back problems but if we can get him for the right price might be something to look into. also what do cubs fans think about Z being switched to a closer???
something also needs to be looked at is josh vitters with the daytona cubs. this kid is a stud tearing up and do we trade him for a pitcher or move him to a different position because we have ramirez for 3 more years i believe

We're two week in, everyone needs to chill. The bullpen issues aren't going away, and nobody is going to trade anyone. The Cubs decided to let Wood go after 2008 because of his history of injury problems. Turns out they were right. Why in the world would they want him back now, just over a year later?
There are some good arms in the bullpen - Marshall, Russell, and Marmol. The struggles that they have had would be helped if the rest of the guys swung the bat.
While I agree with the rest, the reason Vitters has been in A ball the last three years is twofold.
1. He got to Boise as a 17 year old, and has moved up in the middle of each year.
2. He missed a huge chunk of his 18 year old season, at Peoria, with injuries.
If he hadn't been hurt he'd be in AA ball this year. He's still a little young for his league even though he's in High A ball. He's 2-3 years away and would still only be 22-23 hen he made his debut.
Now, do I think he'll be a star, probably not, but he should be a decent ML 3B.
Also, as much as I love all Kerry tried to do for the Cubs...he's done. I doubt he'll ever be able to contribute more than 1 full season in a row for a team again.
Now, despite what I put in the post above, Vitters is not tearing it up in Daytona. In fact, he hasn't torn up much of anything. He's been pretty good in each 2nd half season he's played at each level, but not great. He needs to learn much better patience. If his eye doesn't get better, he'll never make it to the big Cubs.
I'm much more excited about 8-10 other position players they have in the minors, starting with Castro and Lee. I can't wait to see those two in the middle infield, Castro at 2B and Lee at SS, in about 2 more years. Brett Jackson and Kyler Burke are two more I can't wait to see in Chicago.

I realize you're talking about as a reliever. And I replied envisioning him as a reliever. He wasn't very good for the Indians last year.
There's quite a few guys currently in the Cubs system I rather have in the BP than Wood.
And Z going to closer is crazy talk. Marmol is just fine where he is.
