This Gam Will Be A Litmus Test.

Boy, we will really know what we have in this Iowa team about 1:30 this afternoon. We'll get an idea what kind of season Iowa will have, IMO. If Iowa comes out to have a stout D game, Iowa could improve expectations. IA State will be no pushover this year with a good offense. We will know a lot today.

......until next week. ( well, not next week cause that's N Texas and they are gawdawful) But we'll pretty much be saying "litmus test" every week. That just how it goes.

Expect ISU to pull out all the stops. We will be fine. I hope we start out hot, not conservative. Get the ball down the field, smackdown ball, run and run some more. Our D will make some plays also

Playing ISU at litmus test? How many times did we lose to them and go to a major bowl?

I don't think we know much of anything until we get to the conference games. ISU really is not a good football team. Their defense is bad. Offensively they are decent at times. We'll see how great our defense is when PSU rolls into town. I think its good, but not nearly what people think it is. Very concerned about our safety play, and lack of pass rush when we face better teams.

I get what Melrose is saying, but we should win this game. Outside of wr, and more experience at qb, we have more talent at every position. Unless we have multiple turnovers, I see no reason for double digit win

Penn State will be our Litmus test, even with a loss against them things could look solid for the season if the Hawks play well. The same cannot be said with a loss to isu.

I'm a big KF guy, but his record against isu is a huge negative... whoop their asss.

I think the key is the Iowa offense. If they can't move the chains and don't convert on 3rd down until the third quarter again, they will lose.

It is going to be hot today. Whichever defense is on the field the longest is going to wilt by the fourth quarter. This is where the Hawks can grind out a victory.

Whoever controls TOP will control the game.

Just 2002. The following excerpt is from this article:

Can one game help us predict how the rest of Iowa’s season will play out? Maybe. Kirk Ferentz is 9-9 against Iowa State in his career, including 4-5 in Ames. In the years Iowa has beaten Iowa State, it averages 3.1 more wins than during the years it loses to the Cyclones – 9.1 wins to 6 wins. Taking it a step further, Iowa averages 10.25 wins during years it beats Iowa State in Ames compared to just 5.8 wins when Iowa State defends its home-field. The only outliers are the 2006 season, when Iowa beat Iowa State but finished 6-7, and 2002, when Iowa State beat Iowa in Iowa City and the Hawkeyes finished 11-2.

We can do a lot of substituting on the D line so that should help us as the game goes on. I would agree that the Penn State game will be a good measuring stick for the team but I wish it wasn't the first conference game.
