this Feb. Feast or famine?

Iowa's had a "rough time" 2 of the last 3 Februaries, which will it be this year. Will there be an Aaron white that comes to the rescue or will they peak too early again. Hey, it's slow, gotta have something to talk about.

I am of the belief that this next team should improve throughout the year. They are young and learning. There will hopefully be a lot of competition on the team, that will lead to some hungry players yearning for playing time.

That noted, it is still TBD how mentally tough these guys will be. How they handle a good beat down or two (which we hope won't happen) will be telling right away.

Hopefully, Iowa will be such an unknown that other teams will find it hard to prepare for them. The last few years there were a lot of knowns about the Iowa team, but this years team will have four new starters with different strengths than last years starters. It will be interesting, but if you take last years starters with this years replacements, its going to be a totally different looking team. If Iowa comes together as a team early, I don't see many beat downs.

What would be perfect is of we have multiple bench players step it up. So much so that any number of players can get hot, and score some significant baskets. That would make it very difficult to prepare for, when you do not know who the hot hand could be.

Uhl was that guy last year. Baer as well. But we needed more than those two. Jones was looking to be a good one, but then he got hurt.

If we can have 4 solid guys off the bench, that would be ideal. Last year there were times when our bench got destroyed by the other team's bench. Sometimes the starters were enough, but most of those games the bench held us back. This year will be different. We will be deeper, and more balanced. I'm banking on it/hoping for it...

This will be a year of preparation for the season after. A lot of growing pains with signs of progress and hope leading into the next season. You just don't lose the type of players we have in the last two seasons and not see a significant drop off. The B1G is one of the best, if not the best conferences in the country and expecting three star recruits to come in and make a significant impact right out of high school is simply unrealistic. Maybe in the big twelve but not the B1G.

I hope I am totally wrong as nothing would make me happier to be wrong but that is my honest opinion. I realize that we are not just playing freshmen and Joc should bring a lot of offensive punch to the offense but three or four others will really need to elevate their game. I am not saying it isn't possibly but historically Iowa needs experienced seniors and Juniors to be competitive in the B1G.

I'm leaning towards famine. Jok is going to get the best defender on him every game unless someone else steps up. Once they figured out last year he was the one to control and be physical with, was neutralized to a point.
