Things To Do In and Around Tempe

I have some family that lives in the area so I've been down there. I'll list some of my favorite places when we go down. I figure it will give some of those that are going some good ideas. So if you have other suggestions, throw them up!

Sonoma - Your basic hippie town. Really pretty scenery, but has really become more of a tourist attraction. The ride on the way out is real pretty though. Charge your crystals here. (Eyes rolling)

Church in the rock - which is on your way to Sonoma. Really amazing piece of architecture.

Jerome - I was real resilient about going to this town. Its an old copper mining town that sits on the side of a mountain. Once we got up there, I immediately fell in love. Awesome place to just park and walk around. Wine in the Verde Valley is supposedly the "next big thing".

If you are a TOOL/A Perfect Circle/Maynard fan, apparently this is the town where his wine shop is...and where he lives. He is often in the shop running it. We kinda went there by mistake. We saw a big group of people going in so we decided to check it out...pretty cool experience. Another one of his bands (Puscifer?) has a shop across the street.

Obviously Mill Ave is the place to be for New Years.

Others feel free to post some ideas!

did you mean Sedona? Pretty sure you meant Sedona, I lived in Gilbert, AZ for a couple years recently, lots of great places to eat and drink. As well as visit for the "tourist"

I know Phoenix better and a couple suggestions:

Alice Cooper Town.

Heard Indian Museum.

I saw Cooperstown on Man V Food. Looked awesome! It's too bad I don't have the money to make the trip. I haven't been to Phoenix since 1995/96. Our high school marching band was in the Fiesta Bowl parade and held the flag on the field for the Florida/Nebby championship game. I don't remember a whole lot anymore and unfortunately the pics I took there got overexposed so I don't have much reference. I do remember stopping at Organ Stop Pizza and it was pretty interesting.

Organ Stop Pizza - Wurlitzer Organ - Pizza Restaurant - Mesa Arizona

Also, last year when ISU was there they had the team rally out at Rawhide western town so I'm assuming the organizers will be doing that again this year as well. I also remember a ton of golf courses in the Scottsdale area.

I did....sorry, I was in wine mode thinking Sonoma

Yeah, Sedona is cool. It is also about 2.5 hours from Phoenix. Might as well say to go to the Grand Canyon or Vegas for that matter. Also, it will be coollllld up there. Just down the hill from Flagstaff, where you can ski, although it is crappy.

But the OP is onto something. Really nothing to do in Phoenix. Unless you like strip malls and driving 20 miles an hour.

Old Town downtown Scottsdale is pretty cool. Great golf everywhere. I think the Cowboys are in town on Christmas day.

Definitely stay in Scottsdale if you are going to be around Phoenix. But keep an eye on the weather. I was there a couple to a few years ago over the holidays and it was too cold to golf. I still tried and ended up with golfer's elbo from hitting frozen Titleists.

Definitely do the Grand Canyon/Sedona loop if you have the time and means of transportation. Hellacious natural splendor.

PHX has great golf.

Tempe has spectacular scenery of the coed persuasion.

Stop in and thank ASU for beating Arizona.

Then, you can also ask who the hell scheduled them to play two 1-AA teams this year. Invite them to your tailgate....they'll appreciate it.

Mill Ave is great, but there is also the Vine (if it is still there) on the corner of campus if you want a little piece of Iowa City. If you golf, some of my favorite courses are Gold Canyon, Las Sendas, Raven, Ocotillo, and Greyhawk. There are alot of local courses but you are in Arizona, may as well play something that you cannnot get in the Midwest. If you drive and bring a Mt. Bike, there is some great riding all over the valley. We lived in Tempe from 94' to 97' and Chandler until 04', Great times.

Loved these courses as well! Haven't played Las Sendas yet though, but I hear it's great. Greyhawk is a beast and it's one of the 5 toughest courses I've played and Ocotillo is one of the 5 funnest courses I've played. Gold Canyon has great scenery. If you're looking for a course that is more midwestern for a decent price play McCormick Ranch in Scottsdale.
