Things that are right with college football

Just wanted to throw this out there. We all know and have heard what is wrong with college football, the Big 10, the NCAA. I just wanted to see what everybody still really liked or something new that makes what we love to watch a great game (Iowa or whatever).

I want to start off with something new. What makes college football even greater is the fact that student-athletes now know they don't have to start for 3 or more years to get into the NFL. You can think of Iowa this year or Auburn when they had Cadillac and Ronnie Brown. They went to the same school. Didn't set any crazy records. They wanted to play in a great program and learn how to play it well.

They both get drafted in the first round. Ronnie Brown, not the starter, gets drafted and can now be a star in the NFL. Obivously as an Iowa fan, I think of our great Rbs. That is what I love. High school players now know they don't have to necessarily be "the" guy in order to help their team win while still going for their pro career. A great "new" thing that many thought not possible before. Helping out your team and college do well while you also help yourself.

Sans USC and Florida, players play for the love of the game, not money.

College FB will really be great once we finally get a playoff in place, and, pay FB players a stipend for generating the millions upon millions of dollars they generate for the colleges they play for and the NCAA.

I still love the overall atmosphere of a college game. I've been to just one NFL game, but the atmosphere there is TOTALLY different. It's not even something I can describe. There's just an intangible feeling to a college game that makes it so much more fun to be a part of.

I still love the Bowl Games ,which is why I strongly oppose the whole playoff idea.
As was said here, college football is not the NFL,which is a good thing. Playoffs make it more like a mini-NFL. I actually like the fact that some 25+ teams feel good about themselves when they pack away their helmets for the year....not just 1 team.
And that 25 fanbases finish the season feeling good about their program and their future.

The color, the pagentry....it is timeless. The bands. The Scottish Highlanders...oops,no more...but I loved them back in the day.
Traditions...all of them.

i respect the stance about loving the bowls (because i love them too) and not wanting to lose them if a playoff was added- but hate the argument. i seriously doubt the bowls go away just because a playoff has been added. it won't lessen the bowls either - because i don't see there being any chance there will be anything larger than an 8-team playoff.

What I love about college football is that a team like the Hawks can me a force in college football despite all the limitations that a school like Iowa has.

+1. A college playoff system strikes me as one of those "be careful what you wish for" things. What's better? Going to a bowl where you know going in the best you can do is wind up 6th or 5th best, or going to a bowl, playing your hearts out, getting national TV exposure and finding out where you wind up? Seems the current system provides much more fodder for end-of-season and post-season debate and discussion, which holds fan interest and in the end is good for NCAA football.

NFL teams have their share of passionate fans, but it's nothing like the almost spirituality that many college fans feel for their teams during the season and on game day. You will never see a "black-out" or "white-out" or "all gold" in NFL stadiums.

Also like that fact that on any given Saturday, the Davids can compete with the Goliaths and occasionally come away with wins. The greater "error factor" among non-paid, non-professional college athletes serves to somewhat level the playing field. That's what makes college football special, in my eyes at least.

College games do have a different feel to them. However, back in the day, Arrowhead used to rock like Kinnick. Maybe Moeaki can get that place going again. I think the atmosphere for the Michigan game this past season is the best I've ever experienced.

College cheerleaders...ahhh. Cute and bubbly, full of energy. Compare them to pro cheerleaders. Some of the pro gals are smokin' hot, but many look trashy, like they just came back from conducting a pole dancing class...or Big Earl's Goldmine.;)

#1--You can still have all of your obtuse, meaningless, 6-6 team vs 6-6 team bowl games with a playoff. Only difference is the #9 team and below won't be in the playoff. The playoff teams would be able to play up to 3 games.

#2--People say the tourney is what separates the NFL from the NCAA, in a good way. Have you forgotten about the NCAA basketball tourney?

#3--Give the playoffs (8 team) an honest 3 year run. If it doesn't work, you can always go back to the 'old way.'

Was always a huge bowl game supporter... starting to lean more and more towards some sort of play-off system....

Hey, do the OP a favor and take your playoff system vs. bowl system discussion to a new thread. This one is supposed to be the things we love about college football. So if your argument is: I love the bowl games! you're fine. If you're argument is: there should be a playoff system, then you're ruining the feel-good intent of the thread. C'mon guys.

That aside, I'm going to say: I love tailgating, meeting new people, making friends and most of all the passionate, loud atmosphere. Considering these players don't get paid (except by scholarship) to entertain us, it really is an American phenomena.

Rushing the field! Never see it at NFL games.

Sometimes see it too much in college games (yes you Iowa City) but it's a great experience for a big victory. Only time I have rushed at Kinnick was PSU '08. I have witnessed many others (some of which had me shaking my head, i.e. Indiana and Minnesota last year), but PSU was a good one. I'm hoping to get back down there after the OSU game this year

Agreed, and I have thought this for years. Under a playoff, every team but one ends their year with a loss. Every year, even if you were Ohio State or Florida, you could be nearly 100% certain of a season ending loss.
Ditto on the bands and even the Highlanders. This will be my 36th consecutive homecoming performance with the Hawkeye Alumni Band. Yes we are but a small part of the show, but it is fun, brings back memories and reunites us with old friends.

Overtime. College football overtime is the single greatest thing you can do (after 00:00) that doesn't involve farm animals.

Seriously, though. College Overtime is simple fantastic.

College football is special because young people are involved. You have youth in the stands, youth in the bands, and youth on the teams. Young people have a natural enthusiasm that is impossible to describe. And then the older fans, on game days, revert back to their younger days and act like young people on game days (they really do!). College football is special because we all feel like kids on game day. I know I do, and I am pushing 60. There is a happiness and care-free feeling on Saturdays and a nervous anticipation to see how your team will do. But win or lose, you have a certain joy during the day that is really hard to describe. You cannot beat college football - there is no leisure activity quite like it, in my opinion.
