Things I wanna see this season, but likely won't

On Iowa podcast has actually covered this quite a bit this spring and summer. Over the course of the full season, Iowa ran a considerably more diverse set of formations and better run/pass ration last year than most realize. for example, Iowa almost never ran out of a 3 wide/1 back formation, whether under center or out of shotgun. last year, that number ballooned up to almost 35-40%.

Brian had good games as a play-caller (see ISU, OSU), but some real stinkers too (see MSU, Wisconsin). Play-calling aside, what also held the offense back was inexperience at the skill position players outside of Wadley, and a much more inexperienced O-line than anyone anticipated, with Jackson and Wirfs starting at the tackle positions. On paper, this should be a much more talented and experienced offense than we had a year ago. Simple progression should count for quite a lot.
Slightly off topic, but after listening to several podcasts recently it appears that folks have forgotten that Epenesa was a 5 star that got quite a bit of playing time last year. Also, Dochterman & Morehouse apparently believe Amani Jones is a Heisman candidate the way they gush over him.

Jones is certainly an athlete. He can move and bring the boom. If he can get a feel for the game quickly, LB may turn from a question mark to a strength pretty fast.

I would like to see just one thing this year and that is 2 more wins... but I probably won’t

I would like to see the coaching staff go for the kill and not let a lesser team hang around in a game. But Kirk likes to go for the kill about as much as Sonny Corleone likes toll plazas.

For the TE lovers out there I don't say this on anything other than a hunch and the fact he got early reps in the bowl game but I think Beyers will more than get his feet wet out there this year and should add to what we do. He's just a long athletic guy that's bulked up from where he was like 215-220ish when he first got to Iowa to 230 something or more now. Plus Weiting will be out there blocking a ton so we'll have our fill of TEs out there no doubt about it. BF can't say he don't have toys to play with offensively

We got considerably more conservative in the games where we got killed. Should be the opposite of that....

A power running set, extra OL, 2 TEs, with passing plays out of the same formation. Dialed up especially for Connie. Run the ball right down their throat with drive blocking, until they abandon the 3-4 defensive scheme or have to crowd the line with so many defenders, we shred them with Fant and Hockenson. That would be a true throw back to 3 yards and a cloud of dust.

Yes, this is why they should implement it. I may also help loosen the running game up the middle a bit if they are worried about it. I think you were agreeing with me. lol.

The audibles got a bit predictable the past few years. Maybe for the Northern Illinois game, one of the audibles should be the flea flicker so we end up running it like 4 or 5 times. Sure, we wouldn't hit on them all, but giving up the 1 yard we would gain running the same run right into the back of the left side of the o-line is well worth it to give future opponents something to worry about in film work.

Well, depends on how well our line is coached. Last year we couldn't block 4 with 5 and there were a number of plays with a defender running unabated after the snap. Unless you tighten that up no formation is gonna fix that glaring problem.

I'm not talking about running a zone blocking scheme with that formation.

I like the way your thinking!
