Things I wanna see this season, but likely won't

3 TE sets
Stanley punting from shotgun
At least 1 deep shot per quarter
Something other than white bread and tapioca pudding on offense

I'm probably wrong here, but I thought we saw almost all of those things last year, I am hoping that they are much more consistent this season at execution.

1 flea flicker EVERY game.

My logic is that it is a relatively safe "trick" play although I don't really see it as a trick play, stretches the field (making the d-backs honor). Think if you were a coach on the opposing team preparing for Iowa. You would have to scheme that it is going to happen at some point in the game but not sure when. This would loosen the back end of the d a little bit because would have to honor it. The team would have to spend time preparing for it. There are benefits for being unpredictable, EVEN IF THE PLAY DOESN'T ALWAYS WORK!

It is one damn play. Iowa has wasted worse plays in a game, like slant to the shortside after audible.

You are right. But I want to see more of it. Was it three seasons ago Iowa ran 3 TE sets vs Ohio St with success, then we never saw it the rest of the season?

I get ya, I do too... I just remember seeing some 3 TE sets vs Nebraska and definitely in the Pinstripe I think. I am not great with formations. I also remember Stanley punting, so I imagine he didn't do that from under center. I know we ALL talked about how Stanley over threw so many targets last year on the long ball, so it seemed to me that they were at least trying that play often even if it wasn't working. I feel like the offense looked a lot different last year, just wasn't very consistent... I mean, Stanley threw for 27 TD's.....that's different for Iowa.

This year I'd like to see - better protection for Stanley. I'd like to see him limit his mistakes with handling the ball. I'd like to see our YPC rushing increase by over a yard and lastly I'd like to see our LB's be better then advertised.

We actually have the opposite problem, everyone already plays us like we are going to run and dares us to pass.
Flea flicker helps to draw them up, thinking it's a run.

Yes, this is why they should implement it. I may also help loosen the running game up the middle a bit if they are worried about it. I think you were agreeing with me. lol.

Things I want to see
1 yards per passing att go up ( this needs to go way up)
2 yards per rushing att go up
3 sacks taken go down
4 a few more sacks from our D.
5 better punting
6 a lb group who is athletic, powerful and learns really fast. (Not much time for our secondary to get it's **** together before Wisconsin)

I just want to see an offense that can consistently move the ball and not go 3 and out in huge droughts. It's even as simple as not forcing the punter to be kicking from his own end zone regularly and flipping field position. Between the first half of PSU (when we somehow still managed to lead thanks to Jewell's INT and a short field), the entire Wisconsin game and the second half of Purdue, we had way too many droughts where we looked completely hopeless. And with Stanley being a huge drop off from Rudock and Beathard in ability to make plays with his feet, we find ourselves in too many third and long situations compared to the previous few years. In fact might have to go back to Matt Sherman to find a QB so much more likely to get sacked then at least get salvage something with his legs. Have to get back to controlling the clock on offense.

And block some punts, those are game changers.

You’ll be lucky to see two TEs.

Have you seen the latest two deep depth chart? IOWA lists 2 TE positions on its depth chart. Iowa is going to play a lot of 2 TE and 3 TE sets this year.

The real questions we should be asking.

Will Iowa play any 4 TE sets this year?

Will Fant and Hockeson both be all Big Ten this year?

I want to see a dynamic, fast offense. One that slashes the dline and secondary. Running backs that rip off 10 yard runs consistently. Receivers getting huge chunks of YAC.

On Iowa podcast has actually covered this quite a bit this spring and summer. Over the course of the full season, Iowa ran a considerably more diverse set of formations and better run/pass ration last year than most realize. for example, Iowa almost never ran out of a 3 wide/1 back formation, whether under center or out of shotgun. last year, that number ballooned up to almost 35-40%.

Brian had good games as a play-caller (see ISU, OSU), but some real stinkers too (see MSU, Wisconsin). Play-calling aside, what also held the offense back was inexperience at the skill position players outside of Wadley, and a much more inexperienced O-line than anyone anticipated, with Jackson and Wirfs starting at the tackle positions. On paper, this should be a much more talented and experienced offense than we had a year ago. Simple progression should count for quite a lot.

We’ll see how many times they’re both out. I’ll gladly be wrong but I don’t think so.

Daddy Warbucks would be the first one to tell you not to draw too many conclusions from a depth chart.
