Things I Think We All Agree On.

"Just to be clear - You really think a new coach will take 5 years (OR MORE) to get us on track? 2-3 years, yes. But not 5-6 or more. NO WAY."

How do you know a new coach won't take 5-6 years? Based on the challenges a new coach would face, it's much more likely it would take more than 2-3 years. One only needs to look at the last 10 years as a barometer. People need to face facts: Iowa basketball is currently a coaching graveyard.

How do I know that it will take only 2-3 years? I don't. On the flip side, how do all of LIckliters supporters "know" that it will take upwards of a decade for us to have any sort of success again? I would wager a guess that they don't KNOW this either, and it's just a number people are throwing out there. I've never seen any specifics, just generic, blanket statements saying "It will set us back many years". NO specifics whatsoever. So please, lay out these challenges, and why it wall take the better part of a decade just to get us back to the postseason.

Given a lack of talent left behind, it won't be instant turnaround like with UK or what Tom Davis inherited. But are you seriously going to tell me that if a new coach comes in, and is a GOOD coach who can RECRUIT, that those early recruiting classes aren't going to pay off in any way whatsoever, and it won't be until years 5 or 6 that we see results? In other words, that the new coach's first recruiting class will come and go and we will still suck the entire time? Again - NO WAY. Not if we make a good hire. Yes, it will take some time, but not the time frame you are suggesting.

I'd like to know where this estimate of "5+ years" comes from that will be just a complete waste.

It depends on what coach is hired and how his system fits the personel on the team. But nothing should take 5 years. 2 years top to get things going. 3 years for a tourney run. Unless a coach is coming into a situation that with unusual circumstances. Such as reduced scholarships.

It's up to the AD to hire the right coach. Like when Davis was hired. That took a long time to see results didn't it.

Seriously? I don't think any sane person can look at the current state of Iowa hoops and compare that to what TD inherited. Burky, you are smarter than that. Rebuilding Iowa the right way is going to take time. Complain about the style of play all you want (I agree it is too methodical right now), but it is highly unlikely that ANY coach would succeed in year 2-3 at Iowa unless they are given a full cupboard to start. We have crap facilities, few D-1 caliber players in-state and a fan base that isn't very forgiving.

Wow, Shane are you a psychiatrist? That is pretty heavy-- analyzing all of us who complain about Iowa BB. I didn't realize that if I didn't complain here I would have to look inside myself and at my own life. Is Iowa bb really that important? I don't even watch the news or read newspapers so I guess your analysis of me doesn't fit? what now.

Maybe some of us complain just because we are sick and tired of having the worst Iowa run in history of Iowa bb and a coach that just happens to be in charge of all that. Also, when we see games like NW we aren't fooled into thinking that Iowa is just around the corner of being a very good team again and that the Iowa team we see is more like the Purdue game.

Oh sure, it is fun to talk about how we beat up white NW and how we were just as athletic as they were and how good of a game it was but again, when was the last time you saw 10 white guys on the court at the same time for most of a game in the Big 10? And you don't think that might matter just a little?

We beat Indiana but I guarantee you that Crean will have that program turned around quicker than Iowa. It didn't help having their best player hurt, and I mean their best player--perhaps freshman of the year in the Big 10."

NW and their "whities" just beat Minnesota.

First, I'd say it's no guarantee that Lick will be coaching next year. I'd say more transfers are a real possibility and I think most think that would bring the end of Lick at Iowa.

Second, so it's not o.k. for the whiners and complainers to whine and complain, but it's o.k. for others to whine and complain about the whiners and complainers?

Yes, who would ever think a message board would have tired opinions. I agree some of the arguments on both sides get old, but from what I've viewed it appears this has been brought on by the Lick lovers, as you can't even question his recruiting, slow pace of play, lack of changing defenses, etc. without being called names.

It'd be nice to question any of the above and actually have someone defend Lick on any of those points being wrong and why what Lick is doing is right. For instance, I'd love for someone to explain why Lick didn't try a zone defense against Purdue, after they started to abuse our inside players and also got them into foul trouble....but, if you dare bring up that question around this board, your told that "Lick was coach of the year and your not"...."he's forgotten more about basketball this week than you'll ever know"....etc. Instead of having a civil discussion on the merits of a man to man vs a zone in that game, the above is the crap you get.
