scoring defense 9th nationally (only Michigan ahead of us)

scoring offense 47th (5th in conference - Purdue/PSU/Mich/OSU in front)

Both numbers better than I thought.

In conference 37 wins/29 losses since B1G created divisions

EDIT: 37/30 if you count the CCG

Here comes the obvious question....

If Iowa is 2nd in defense and 5th in offense, why are they only 4-4 in the the conference?
They've found ways to lose the close ones.

Win half of those and they're 6-2. Sounds a lot better than 4-4 amd explains much the frustration around here. They would also be 9-2 overall.

This is the conundrum when put up against these stats. People have been demanding a much better offense and these offensive scoring numbers are great.

But once again just like last year we are seeing highs and lows in scoring, 10 against jNW and then 63 against Illinois.

Too much variability, not making the key play is the problem both last year and this year.

Inconsistency in offense rather than a consistent juggernaut.

That will happen when you have no running game and when your best deep threat is riding the pine.

Kirk ball, beat scrubs, piss on your leg in the games that either make or break a season. In those big games, pre game and especially in game coaching and leadership float or sink the ship. We be sinkin
Gotta hope they go our way next year. Variability has always been the name of the game at Iowa, especially the last twenty years.

We have these things called turnovers. They usually kill you.

You know, when your offense has 80 plays in a game, one turnover won't kill you. Not saying that turnovers aren't bad, but I think teams like Oregon have shown that you can overcome them by just attempting so many plays. In a way, it is an acknowledgment of Parker's defensive philosophy - most college teams cannot consistently drive the ball, or have ball security issues. Let's just understand that randomness happens, and be super aggressive and cause the defense to make mistakes that lead to big plays. Go fast and break big plays. Yeah, you might have some short drives, but you will get a cushion of points because Johnny Defense is not perfect either, and he'll fall down a couple times.

If you go compile the stats for say the last 10 years, I would bet the team that turns ball over more is very highly likely to have lost.

This happens, weather happens, turnovers happen. Nebraska was averaging almost 38 pts. over their previous 7 games, were coming off hanging 54 on Ill. and could only muster 9 against MSU. Granted those 9 were enough to win. Unfortunately, as Kirk would say, that's football.

Is there an echo in this thread?

Alex, I'll go with coaching decisions, especially in late game situations, for $1,000 dollars please.

Hey, we must be improving....at a glacial pace. We used to lose at least once a year to the scrubs, too.
