There was once a thread on this board asking whether...

you would rather have an Iowa national championship in football or basketball, and I answered football. Looking at it now, though, I would MUCH rather have a basketball national championship. Winning the national title in football wouldn't mean anything, since that's a joke sport where fan support and media attention actually is a crucial factor in determining the quality of postseason you have.

In all actuallity, the NCAA tournament isn't the best way either. Loads of upsets (and don't get me wrong, I love 'em), but the best team doesn't always win. UNI was a very good team, and had more than enough talent to beat Kansas. But in a best of 5 or best of 7, Kansas wins almost every time. That's the best way to have a playoff: best of 7. In a series that long, the better team wins every time.

But I get your point about the basketball title holding more weight than the BCS.

There's maybe not a better sport in the world than college football. The way it is operated is the joke. JMO

If we can only have one, give me football. BUT...I have derived a great deal of joy from both Iowa FB and Iowa BB in my life and neither have won a national title...I think the only time in my life I have ever thought about a national title was in the first three Tom Davis years in hoops...I never got caught up in that last year when Iowa was 9-0 in football

Jon what about in early 2003 after the J-ville coaching position went away and Kirk spoke in a not-so-veiled coach speak about "unfinished business" making it pretty clear his goal was to win a National Title?

Football hands down. Basically because the 4 plus month ride would be absolutely incredible. Imagine last year times a million. Basketball would be great as well but its only a 3 week ride because the regular season isnt crucial. In football every play matters and makes every win (no matter who its against) very special

Football pays the bills right now and a national title would be huge towards more perks for all involved not to mention bring the basketball team some much needed hype. Not to slight how great our wrestlers and the domination that Tom Brands has brought back to our great program but if it were between basketball and football, football- no contest.

A football championship would be AMAZING for the U of I. But remember...we technically had a national championship in football in 1958.

I am sure that is their goal, and I hope it happens. But there is only one champ every year, and Iowa has to have so many things go right for it to be in the mix at the end...and typically, ALL of those things haven't happened...Fred Russell getting hurt and not playing the second half vs ISU in 2002 (and Banks' thumb), losing at Ohio State in 1985, Stanzi getting hurt vs NW last year, fumbling in the endzone and then losing that game, etc.

I started that thread awhile back and still think basketball. I think the NC in football would be better for the school, but I LOVE march madness and to have the Hawks in the mix would be great.

I am going to say Basketball. Because in football there are lots of meaningful games played in crowded stadiums. In basketball, teams play NCAA playoff games in empty arenas until the final four. So, everything in basketball kind of sucks before the championship level.

It's good for TV and for filling out brackets, but lousy for the actual in arena experience. My wife was watching the tournament the other day and she said, "It's Duke and there still isn't anybody there."

So I say give me a Cap One or Outback over a round of 32 anyday. I would take an Orange Bowl or Rose Bowl over a Sweet 16 However, the Final Four is so special because it is the only time in the tournament where the actual in-Arena atmosphere really feels like a championship environment.

I love basketball in general and Iowa basketball in particular so my heart wants to say basketball however...

It was sometime in the 80's when I realized that football had surpassed baseball as the national pastime; the sports world (at least in our part of the world) absolutely revolves around football and college football is much better than pro so I would have to say a football championship would be better. It's the dominant sport and it would give us bragging rights over a larger audience.

How about a choice between a football championship or back-to-back basketball championships?

The only true way to decide a champion in College basketball would be to have a series...because honestly while everyone "loves the underdog" they are not the best teams...Syracuse would beat Butler 8 out of 10 times...same with Kansas and Kentucky...the best team is not the team that wins the NCAA tournament usually....just some food for thought....

for those of you saying march madness isn't the best way to determine a champion, you are nuts. basketball by far has the best system to determine a champion compared to football. winning 6 games in 3 weeks is truly an amazing accomplishment, give me basketball.....
