I used to sit in the W section before they reconfigured the stadium and moved the student section. Here's the deal. Those vowel sounds are much easier to yell. They're one syllable and you can just yell I or O or A and hold it and when all of your friends join you it's loud as hell.
W is three syllables and unless like 19,000 people all yell it in complete synchronicity it's never going to sound as loud.
