The realities of today's loss

Watching the game in Kinnick today the hawks looked sluggish, NDS looked faster and more agressive.

Both NDS lines were getting under the hawk linemen's pads and had more leverage. The hawks need to work on fixing this.

The hawks had enough stumbles, pass drops, bobbles, missed tackles, and missed blocks and missed blitz pickups in one game to make up for every good bounce they had last year.

NDS is a good team but the hawks played poorly. The hawks are not good enough, like in the Rose Bowl, to overcome these kinds of mistakes.

The defense only gave up 16 points and I think the offense needs to really look at their game plan and execution. I am not giving up on the hawks though and I think they can get back to playing better ball.

Any other thoughts will be appreciated.

The thing is, our defense can't get off the field to give our offense a chance to get a rhythm. They don't give up a lot of points because they give them up so slowly. How much better off would we have been if they gave up a one play scoring drive instead of an 8 minute scoring drive? When your the better team, giving up a quick score is the second worst thing you can do. Way behind the worst thing which is giving up a long, drawn out scoring drive. Take some frickin chances and get the defense off the field. One way or the other.

Here's the reality....

The chickens are coming home to roost from our pi$$ poor recruiting classes from 2012-2014.

We start two walkons and a converted QB at OL. A greyshirt is our top wideout. Our starting "rush end" is a slow 6'2" 245 recruiting after-thought. Our starting WLB is a guy who played so bad on one of the more disappointing teams that he lost his job only to resurface this year and our starting FS is a walkon who gets trucked by FCS RBs.

It's gonna be 2 more years before we're good again...

The biggest problem is when guys you mention get forced into action early. Because once the hard worker gets on the field, it's really rare for him to come off. That means we're usually stuck with said player until they graduate reguardless of who comes up behind him.

The other thing is, we had glaring weaknesses in the roster last year and we still went 12-0 and we're up 2 scores late in a lot of those games. Sometimes the perfect storm of bad happens and cost you a game. They happen a lot with Kirk tho. But this game was more about the perfect storm of suck than a reflection of how bad we are.

Difficult to win without talent...poor recruiting leads to gaps in positions...teams with talent could roll us...and even NDSU

Not NEAR as much as this year. We had Blythe and Walsh to stabilize the OL...nothing like that now. Fisher was head and shoulders ahead of Bower. Lomax v Snyder isn't even close. Tevaun gave defenses a deep threat to respect. Throw in a great TE in HKC and nothing like that this year. And, well, this is what happens.

The reality is we get to watch more of the same old crap for a few more Saturdays folks....our next really good opponent will beat us by more than two points.....more like 2 scores

Welsh and Daniels are those guys on the line but they were both out. Lomax had his issues to but was definitely better than Snyder is now. And the smartest guy on the board says Bower is good. And you know he's right because he was the first to enlighten us about how bad Beathard is. 16 starts later, Beathard finally proved he was right.

Sh*t, I was depressed before but now? Damn....

With the athletic director giving Ferentz a ten year extension, people on this board will have plenty of time to bitch about Ferentz coached football. The Ferentz way is to overperform when his contract is being negotiated, and to underperform when it is signed, sealed, and delivered.

I want to believe this is like an ISU loss during an otherwise great year. In those years it seemed the better team didn't win but luck and a fre great plays decide the outcome. Like then one team seemed more interested. Dif is that one team controlled the line. NEWSY was the better Iowa. I think its a lack of tak ent at key positions that can't be hidden from gamer coaches. CJ reminds me of Candy his senior year.

The union card is one of the bigger issues on this team. When Bower jumps up the ranks overtaking other guys you know we are in for major problems. Now you have Jewell out of position running around trying to cover his assignments and Bowers. Pretty soon you are getting gashed. The last time we had Bower on the field we had major issues on the defense on the outside now we put him on the inside and we have major issues there. Unreal!!!! Play freaking Mends like we should have from day 1 or Hockaday or Jones at the least.

Throw in Synder for good measure and teams are attacking these 2 players. How about playing Gair or Hooker instead?

So sick of the Union card and 'good story' that just bites us in the azz

How damn deflating 3 games into the season.Iowa didn't even get out of preseason without a loss. This is what happens when the coaches coach scared and tight. This shouldn't happen at home let alone against a FCS team. When you recruit against the North Dakota States and Miami of Ohio's of the world, this is what you get. YOu play at that same level.

I understand the comments about the in game coaching and I agree with some of the comments. The thing that concerns me the most is that with all the resources, facilities, and amount of money spent on strength and conditioning, we still were physically dominated by an FCS team. Ouch.

It's the way we play the game that leads to that in the 4th quarter. Defense is on the field too long because we're afraid to try to make something happen. At halftime I think they were averaging less than 3 yards per play. Other than the first 2 possessions, it looked like pure domination until late in the game.

So tired of watching games like this. The whole time it's playing out you're aware of the past but think this game is going to be different. Too much talent disparity for us to give it away this time. Then out of nowhere they make a couple plays to make it close but it's still not that big of deal. Next thing you know, the offense can't buy a first down and the defense can't buy a stop. Before you know it you're praying for a miracle and scratching your head wondering what the hell just happened. Fun times.
