The Potentially Dancing With Myself, Stand Against Site Apathy Game Thread

What is a realistic expectation for this team moving forward? Getting 9 wins in conference play seems really hard.

It does. And Fran was PISSED when Jess was interviewing him post-game. Called defense "unacceptable except for the middle of the game"

Don't just say it. Do something about it. Pine time for the perpetrators.

I noticed that as well. I’m just not sure what it means, tho. In your opinion, what do you think the odds are that Fran comes back next year? I’m 50/50.

That's fair. I'm just concerned that we're going to get eaten alive physically in league play. And that after nearly a decade and a half in this league he still refuses to recruit the type of players who can move people off their spots and force people east and west in halfcourt sets.

Neither....it is a morgue. Ask Gretchen, Betty was almost falling asleep.
Were you there?

Harding/Bowen in a battle for minutes. We need them both. Were you at the game? Probably not. Look up Patrick’s stats. Oh, wait, never mind. You won’t care.
Patrick played 30 mins and had 2 rebs... The one thing we'd really need his size out there helping out with against a smaller team is that. I could pick apart PMs game all day. Bottom line is he's not a smart player (like his bro) or an aggressive one. His shot selection and decision making are often not good at all. He hasn't gotten noticeably better even though he has put on some weight. He deserves some mins for sure I'm not saying bench him totally. But he shouldn't be playing 25-30 plus mins.

This season is a rebuilding yr they aren't going to the dance they have no delusions of grandeur of having a great yr. So what they should be doing is playing the youngsters who are going to be the cornerstones of the future. Harding should start PM should sit. This should be the starters getting the most mins

Harding
Perkins
Sandfort
Krikke
Freeman

Bowen can back up Harding

Dix can backup Perkins

PM can backup Sandfort and or one of the other bigs if they want to go small

Dembele when he's back should get time as well he's burned his RS so let him play through his struggles he's got some big upside I think.

Little Sandfort should get some time as well to me it's between he and Dix whichever one is playing better.

Brauns should probably be playing a little more then he is too. That would let Freeman play harder while he's out there and not let him worry about getting into foul trouble too much.

Desonte should see more time. Cold tonight but a huge net positive.

Brock's court vision really is unreal.
How Fran is handling Bowens mins this yr is really head scratching. He needs to play him more and turn him loose. I like when he and Harding are both out there. But Bowens time is so sporadic he isn't given any rope to make mistakes or get in the flow of the game.

To me that's what could get a kid like him to transfer back home after this yr more then anything. Teasing him with being a starter for awhile yet not playing him a ton and having an undefined role for him frankly. Hope I'm wrong I think he has great potential

If this is a “rebuild” like everyone says it is let Harding and Bowen battle it out for the point guard spot.
I'd love to see both on the floor together on occasion.

Not sure about this ... severely lowers scoring options. Now - Harding at point and Perk at 2 ... YES!

Said a few weeks before, Harding needs to start! Quick, energetic, already a floor leader, focused, better D than the entire rest of the team. Can NOT afford to lose him (or Freeman) in portal so get them minutes!

I agree with every point you wrote, exactly to the man in the rotation.
Not quite as high on young Sandfort and would lean much heavier on Dix.
I'd might even go with Dembele over P-Mac ... FAR more athletic and (in the most simplistic terms) very similar production.

I wouldn't completely write the dance off for this team, but setting your expectations as that being the goal is fair still imo. Iowa has a lot of winnable games left on the schedule, and just high enough level teams to continue to build their resume (Nebraska, Wisconsin, Purdue at Carver, Rutgers, Minne, Northwestern, Ohio State, IL, Michigan State) - any wins in that pool are going to be good resume wins.

I realize it's looked bad so far, but Iowa is playing a lot of new pieces. Not that shocking that they haven't really put it all together yet and it leaves me a little hope that the team will see substantial growth as the season unfolds.

Their losses in hindsight don't look real bad.
Loss to Ken Pom # 4 Purdue
Loss to Ken Pom #5 Iowa State
Loss to Ken Pom # 8 Creighton
Loss to Ken Pom # 21 Oklahoma (who was #7 yesterday)
Loss to Ken Pom #71 - Michigan - who will likely rise

So, while it hasn't been pretty, Iowa has played one heck of a schedule so far. I am hopeful we come out the otherside better for it. One thing is for certain, Fran has gotten his younger guys minutes and we're better moving forward because of it.
