The Pac-10 is Panicking

Seems to me the biggest $$ play is to bring Texas in the The Pac 10 and get a network established that would include the states of California and Texas.

If it truly about $$ then Fox Sports will spare no expense in setting up this up the way they want it.

What do you think sounds better? Joining a conference that MIGHT get a network that MIGHT be successful and then eventually earning almost as much as the Big Ten is earning now? Or joining a conference that ALREADY has a successful network and doubling an annual income that is even greater then the Pac-10's best case scenario?

And all of that is to say nothing of the shared research dollars the Big Ten spreads around.

Fox is driving the Pac Ten Big Six discussions. It is not a might, it is a definite that they are getting a network. They are also getting a network that has WAY more TV sets than any other conference and Texas gets to be involved in making the terms, not signing on to existing terms.

Fox wants the North, Northeast, Southwest, and West. They are sweetening the pot to make it happen. We are talking about the most powerful media corporation in the world.

So can you guarantee that the network will not meet a hitch and will absolutely launch? Can you guarantee that it will be anywhere close to as successful as the BTN? The Pac-10's TV contracts right now are some of the worst in all of college football - there is a reason for that. It isn't enough to have big markets, you have to have a fan base that gives a crap. If they were able to capitalize on their large markets as it were then they would have better TV contracts than the chicken-feed they have now.

There is, by no means, any kind of a guarantee that if they can get a network off the ground that it will be anywhere near as successful as the BTN. They have yet to convince the local cable companies to even carry the thing. Fox may well want UT in the Pac-10 - but I have a feeling Texas couldn't care less what Fox wants. And which do you think Texas would rather do, sign on to terms that gives it more money or help make the terms that gives it less?

"They also want to keep the extremely lucrative Red River Rivalry, which is played in Texas each year. But the research institutions of the Big Ten would really have to swallow a bitter pill to take OU."

The Rivalry is not relevant to the realignment discussion. People forget OU and Texas were in different conferences for decades and still played every year. This will continue regardless of where Texas goes.

Believe me, you people in the North don't get it.

What, this is a supposed Iowa Hawkeye fan that came up with this garbage line?

Yes, the Pac-10 is panicking, because they're rushing into this.

The Big 10 wasn't going to get Texas (or want Oklahoma), and the Pac-10 isn't going to want Nebraska or Missouri, so the Big 10 is taking their time and going about it the right way.

The thing is, Texas might be best where they are now: the Big 12. Any other conference, be it Big 10, Pac-10, or SEC is going to create a host of other problems.

But the Big 12 isn't going to survive if the other conferences expand beyond 12 teams, so Texas is going to go where ever they want.

Also note that Texas wants their own TV network; they don't want to share a network, and they sure as hell don't want to share the revenues. Just look at the current Big 12 contract: it's a joke in favor of Texas and Oklahoma; it's no wonder Missouri is gone at the drop of a hat.
