The Only Way This Mess Can End Well.

There is only one way that this can possibly end well or in the best way. We all know that KF is not going to fire Brian. No way. The only way Iowa can possibly move on from this is if Brian announces he will be stepping down from the OC position at the end of the season. Is he man enough to do that to help save his father's legacy? That is the question. It's the unselfish thing to do. That's what it comes down to.

This program is going to be known for nepotism and Brian being in the wrong position, with Kirk supporting it. Is that how it is going to end? Boy, no doubt that KF is in a horrible situation, because of the decisions he made regarding having family on staff and in such a high profile position as the OC.

Again, would Brian step down at the end of the season?

KF has the keys to the car, like he always has, but Brian controls the path to Kirk's legacy at Iowa.

Before Saturday the last Iowa game I went to was in 2017 against Ohio. I actually don't think BF is a bad X and O guy, but the drop off in talent during his tenure is unimaginable. That offense is back to late '90's level of bad and with the portal I'm pretty nervous about this offseason. We could be on the escalator to purgatory.

I actually think Brian will resign at the end of the season. I have to think Brian has enough self-awareness to realize he is damaging the program and his father by staying on.
Kirk will call in some markers and find him and OC landing spot at an FCS school.

Yea, how at Iowa is the line play this damn bad as a whole? How does that happen at Iowa. Bullies of the BIG 10 we are not, and have not been for a decade.

Agree. And national ridicule of the program can only accelerate the trend.

I feel it's more KF will reassign Brian within the program, perhaps back coaching the OL.

Best case is O line coach for Brian. No school in their right mind would hire him at OC

The question is if we will see the love of a son for his father show through. I don't think anybody would look down on Brian if he did that and would respect him for it. It could actually be a very beautiful gesture in a dynamic situation.

And many of these FCS schools prob have a young coach running the RO or PO offenses we see today. Nobody is going to take a flier on a guy installing the 1980's power I offense with a fullback. Ain't gunna happen.

Dude, this guy lived in Section 8 housing when he was in college while his old man was earning close to $4 million per annum. To attribute any sort of normal morality or self awareness to him is pretty hard.

I actually dont think the problem will be fixed by getting rid of Brian. KF will replace him with somebody willing to run the offense Kirk wants to run. We need to get rid of Kirk. He is the common denominator in the last 20+ years of offensive woes.

Stoops, Stoops, Stoops!

I 100% agree. If fans, the AD, the President, the boosters, whoever "forces" Kurt to get rid of The Brain then Kurt will make his next hire in a spiteful mood and the next guy will make Greg Davis look like Bill Walsh.

We have two different things or topics going on here.

One is stepping down at the coordinator to help preserve his father's legacy, regardless if Iowa were to move on at HC. The other is what is the correct thing to do if Brian stepped down for the team to progress and compete.

I am of the opinion that if The Brain leaves it will be deemed a force out no matter what. And spite will be delivered in return.

I have thought about that, too. Bu really, I think this looks worse for BF. He becomes a quitter. I think it is easier for him if KF says the production simply hasn't not met the expectations, so even though it is not all BF's fault, a change is needed. But I agree with you, all indications are that he would never do that.

I would suggest a 3rd option...Barta stepping in.

If Kirk decides he wants to keep coaching (assuming he does), one long-shot option might be sliding Brian back to OL coach, and promoting LeVar to OC. And saying something along the lines of LeVar always being a creative, resourceful coach who is now clearly ready for more responsibility, and also announcing that it is only fair to let Levar install his own offensive system and hire his own QB coach.

Absolute worst case scenario, the offense is about the same, but fans are enthused with seeing something different and appreciate Kirk's willingness to change. And Kirk can say see, it wasn't about a new system, so you fans can stick it. Plus he would have taken the heat off his son and wouldn't have to answer endless questions about nepotism and stubbornness.

If the offense did improve, then you'd have the eventual transition plan to LeVar in place. Maybe that's not the way Kirk envisioned it, but at least it'd be one of his assistants and presumably Brian might have a chance to stay on staff and continue to raise his kids in Iowa City. And LeVar would likely keep much of the staff in place. I assume that's also important to Kirk.

This would take planning and foresight. The only event that required planning and foresight that this athletic department and program have successfully pulled off was the installation of Brian Ferentz as coordinator.

What a dynamic situation as it brings in the personal relationships to this whole thingy. What are future Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays going to be like? Sure, they would be cordial but it would always be known that dad and Grandpa Kirk had to fire son back in the day.

I've thought about the bold as well. It's Barta's responsibility to do what is best for the University of Iowa sports programs and university. That is and should be his interest. Now will he have the kohonas or balls to do it? Actually, he might be doing KF a favor in going into his office and stating... "Kirk, we really need to make a change at OC. I know he is your son and it's difficult but.................". This way KF can feel that admin made a call and might help preserve that personal relationship aspect. That might be the best move. But, I'm not sure Barta has the balls or spine.

Man, you can't make this shit up. Like a made for TV movie...........this shit!

It's time to shake up the staff

Fire the OL coach
Move Brian Ferentz back to OL coach
Move Jon Budmayr to new OC and QB coach.
