The New commit for Hawkeyes

Really surprised that there hasn't been more on HN about the commitment of
Anthony Nelson. Almost certainly, Anthony will be a future starter on the
Hawkeye Defensive line. And from I'm hearing, he has the potential to be an
All Big Ten player at Iowa.

Pretty high praise for a fallback recruit that was only offered after we struck out on several higher-profile targets. He has a grand total of two offers from Power 5 schools, one from arguably the worst major program in America (ISU), and one from about the 9th best school in the B1G right now. This kid is as far away from a can't-miss prospect as you can possibly get.

Undersized Big ten DE is what I see in him, he will obvioulsy gain a lot of weight. I think he is a diamond in the rough who will actuall add some speed to our defensive front.

at 215 lbs right now? He would need to put on 80-100lbs. Not happening, sorry. I could see it as well if he was anywhere from 240-260.

Ike Boettgers was 220 pounds. Pretty sure Robert Gallery was around that weight as well when he came to Iowa.

I have no idea if that's the plan for Nelson, but he's certainly got the frame to add that much weight if they want to go that route.

He can still be a Hawk OT. Just gotta get to 260 which is where they like em.....

The sad thing is there are actually people happy about this type of recruit. Its a perfect example of what is wrong with our recruiting. 4 year project, hope he gains about 50 pounds at the very least and doesn't get slower in the process in the hope that one day he might have a B1G ready body. What a great get.

In my opinion from the highlight films he doesn't look any sort of lineman. I think he has the build of like a tight end.

He is an Iowa kid that could help the program. We simply don't know for sure right now. Robert Galery was a skinny kid when he got here. Wadley and Parker were lightly regarded prospects we got at the last moment who appear to have potential. I am as peeved with kfootball as any,but there is no reason to disparage the kid who has not played a snap yet for the Hawks.

No the sad thing is there are people insulting this kid.

I don't think anyone is trying to insult or disparage the kid, I think some of us have put the black & gold kool aid away more so than others. The culture around this program has denigrated to the level where many accept "The Story" > "The Performance" (I should know, because I was right there myself just a couple seasons ago).

I would love to see this kid turn out to be an all-conference performer and would love even more to see his name on Mel Kiper's board before his senior season - the next Dallas Clark/Bob Sanders/Robert Gallery/etc...

...but realistically, you gotta be honest with yourself about what he is. He is a fall back recruit... not that there is anything wrong with a "fall back recruit" - even O$U signs fall back recruits; no one gets their top choice every time. But not only was he not our first choice, but we stole him from ISU - who, despite what you might be led to believe by us losing to them more often than not, is easily one of the worst programs in the history of ever.

So sure, hope for the next Dallas Clark/Bob Sanders/Robert Gallery, but don't expect it. Sometimes it feels like we've gotten to the point as a program where we perversely think the less unheralded/more unlikely a recruit seems, the higher the likelihood of success...for every Dallas/Bob/Robert, there's any number of duds whose names you never bothered even learning.

No one is insulting the kid. We are insulting the state of this program and the man who drove it down to this level.

Agree..........what Hawk fan wants a recruit to not be a big contributor? However, you can't build a team with exceptions and occasional breakout recruits. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see more and more of our recruits having suitor lists that are "quite limited". Personally, I'm not insulting the program or the man but I do have to shake my head every time someone cites a lower rated / recruited prospect that becomes a star at Iowa and uses that as the grounds for this staff's ability to put together the necessary talent that it takes to contend consistently. You can't build a contending team on exceptions and we seem to be in that position more and more in recent years.

Best of luck to all the verbals and welcome aboard.

With a few exceptions, here, the dark negativity of a lot of posters, make me think a
BAD case of SAD has set in on some 'fans'.

I recommend getting out of the basement, into some Sunshine, for a while.
