the KF salary debate....

No ticket prices will go down if the program declines. Supply and demand like what happened with basketball. Hopefully we don't get to that point. The point is if you are going to pay high prices for tickets, you want a good product.

So you think if the coach is paid less, ticket prices will go down? You really think that?

Ticket prices may not go down, but if we were paying a coach $2M to generate similar wins and that would stoke the football revenue engine, there would be more revenue for other sports. I can't remember for sure, but I think the total annual cost for non-football programs is in the $0.5M-$2M. So basically, you could fund an entire program for the salary you would save.

Kirk's paid because of market forces, but he could be overvalued when he signed the contract. The question is whether a different coach could keep football generating the same revenue. And of course, he's got a contract so it's not like you can just tear it up and stop paying him.

If he was making 1.5 million a year would it make a loss to Minny any easier?

Sorry the salary debate is just idiotic and some people don't want to hear this but all the other things he does off the field and the money he is able to bring into the state, the U of I, and the U of I hospitals and clinics not to mention all of his time and money that he donates are a big part of why he gets paid what he does.

Sure W/L are the bottom line but until the big donors stop writing large checks and people stop buying tickets he won't be going anywhere at least not by his own choosing.

KF earned the salary he is being paid based on past results. Did the university overpay? Perhaps, but it's about ROI and KF has been the only money maker for the athletic department for quite a few years. I don't have the numbers, but to pay him $3M to bring in probably 8-10 x that in revenue is a good investment.

I am extremely disappointed in the product on the field and yes, I do think he is failing to meet the expectations that come with a big check. However, I do not begrudge him for taking the deal that was put in front of him.

KF was offerred the contract and signed it. So, the money is his unless he quits. That said, Iowa is living up to its portion of the K by paying the money. KF is clearly not, by fielding teams worse than coaches making 3 times less. So, he is putting this **** product on the field and taking money ear marked for teams that don't lose consistently to some of the worst D1 programs in America. I think KF should have to answer questions about his salary every day until he either (1) quits (2) takes a voluntary reduction or (3) earns it.

I guess the argument is that he fufills number (3). He earns it because he's a key cog on the revenue generating machine. That's the name of the game.

The point isnt the amount - it's the comparison to other coaches of the same pay level.

None of them could keep their jobs with 7 wins a season. The point isn't that Kirk isnt any good - it's that success in the early 2000's has somehow made it that he is beyond reproach.

I have never posted anything saying fire him ever - and I have never like his style or total lack of aggression and intelligent clock management - even in his early glory years.

I respect the man and when there winning it makes my disagreement with his entire coaching philosophy bearable, but when he is losing... boy it's tough to deal with

Well, its a very fine line there. You have people like myself who buy season tickets religiously b/c I like to support the University and enjoy a couple weekends in IC. But you have many, many others that will stop buying tickets, hats, shirts, etc., very abruptly (i.e.--next fiscal year) if the abysmal product on the field continues. I think you will begin to get a real taste of that this year if Iowa goes to a junk bowl game. Could be a real wake up call.

Iowa Football is a self-sustaining program, they can pay whatever the hell they want to pay the man.

He's a tenured football coach who has proven he's worth money based on past results.

For once, I agree with the KF apologists.

His salary is TOTALLY irrelevant, and not only that is as much of a statement to the next head coach as it is to KF, regardless of whether the next coach is hired in 2012 or 2022.

If there was a sustained down cycle, yes, this would happen. And if it happened I think KF would be gone at the end or near the end of his contract.

But, he has shown ability to turn things around in the past. So who knows.

Its self sustained only b/c of athletic department revenues and donations. I can assure you it does not have an endowment on the level of Harvard and will experience some very real pressure if the current state of frustration continues. People supporting the department are not dumb and they know how much KF is making. In exchange for that support, a baseline level of comptency is expected. It was not achieved last year given the talent level and is well below this year in my humble opinion.

I heard Dolph say that last year the football program netted $77m. That was enough to fund the rest of the athletic department. If these figures are accurate...pay the man!

I understand people saying he's overpaid for the amount of production, but the man makes the school some serious money.
