The Jim Bain Fan Club Thread

Jim Bain was a ref that called a bogus foul on Kevin Boyle when Boyle was nowhere near the player Bain said he fouled. Boyle was furious and was in Bain's ear as he walked off the court. Later that night Bain was in KC working the Big 8 Tourney. The Jim Bain Fan Club was formed shortly after.

and now...refs can't work more than one game in one day....and Kevin Boyle is doing color commentary on the radio for the best team in the state

That's really cool how you can look at the old newspapers like that. It's like being at the library without having to wear pants.

It's amazing how long his name has lived on. He was the first official that I ever knew by name...this goes back to my earliest memories of Iowa basketball. There were little dolls that were sold of Bain with a hangman's noose!

As I recall the call was less atrocious than the fact that Bain got it on the wrong player. It was such a heated game that any mistake at the end of the game, especially one perceived to have led to Purdue winning, was going to be magnified 100 times. Some Iowa fans felt he made the call to avoid overtime because he had a plane to catch for the Big 8 tourney that night.

Iowa fans were justifiably upset, although the death threats were out of line. Bain's lawsuit against the T-shirt merchants was of questionable merit.

I'm one of those who believe Bain did call the foul to catch his flight. Though there may have been a foul, it was definitely not on Boyle. I agree the death threats were way over the top. It's an intense game, but it's not that intense.

Lute was furious. In the post game presser he said that Bain should be in Jail.

Bain Ref/ Bain Call created from that game. 1982. my, how time flies.

Interesting article on the same page about Tommy John. and to think the guy was an actual pitcher - just didn't give his name for a surgical procedure! :) for those interested - yes, he got his trade from the yankees to the angels that year, but finished his career there from 86-89...so it must not have been that bad! :)

The officiating in that game, particularly towards the end, was among the worst I've ever seen. Not long before the phantom foul, Kenny Arnold was driving for a layup and was absolutely hammered....no call. Had the foul been called (as it should have), and Kenny made the free throws, Iowa likely would have won.

Oh? I thought he was doing UNI games. And by almost any standard you care to choose, they are the fourth best team in the state.
