If you hear this stat being floated around, understand it is highly misleading, and here is why.
Iowa’s defense and special teams accounted for 48 total points, or roughly 4 per game (6 TDs & 3 safeties).
Iowa’s defense set up the offense for many easy scoring drives. Iowa had a ridiculous 13 scoring drives of under 40 yards (8 TDs & 5 FGs). That’s another 71 points or nearly 6 points per game.
All of this is to say that Iowa’s defense as we all witnessed was very good this year. In a normal year you may get a few non offensive TDs, but 6 is quite a lot. You will get some short scoring drives, but our defense set up our offense time and time again. The offense, under the leadership of BF, still has a very long way to go.
