The health of the people in our country

I got the shingles vaccine, after some thought. I had a couple of colleagues who got shingles and it's rather awful. You can also have some ugly neurologic and ophthalmic sequelae from shingles.

So, I got the vaccination series and I also had a 102 fever. I was informed of the side effects, however. Maybe complain that you weren't told about those side effects! You should have been told.
My first vaccine dose gave me a 102F fever that same day. They don't tell you about the side effects.
So when I schedule the vaccine I should get it in the winter time so I can crack my bedroom window when it's 20 degrees out?

Honestly I'd probably just take the afternoon and next day off and start taking ibuprofen preventatively. There's always netflix shows to catch up on and if I end up not getting a fever all the better.

After seeing people with shingles I do NOT want it.

That’s fine until you get older. The likelihood of bad complications once you hit 65-ish goes way up from respiratory infections no matter how healthy you are.

Also, not getting yearly physicals once you turn 40 is idiotic, especially if your insurance pays for it. I found out 3 years ago I was diabetic and had zero symptoms. Runs in my family. Don’t eat junk food, not overweight, don’t smoke/don’t drink, no soda. Had no behavioral risk factors and A1C went to 8.5 in the space of 12 months. I cut all carbs and got my A1C down to 4.3 with no other changes and it’s still there with no meds. If I hadn’t had my physical I’d not have known and maybe been dead now.

Had a classmate of mine this past year get his physical and had weird numbers on his blood panel, ended up finding out he had very early stage colon cancer. Zero symptoms.

It isn’t about what you need to do to stay healthy once you hit 40/50/60…it’s about finding things you don’t know while there’s still time to fix them. If you have kids you’re being irresponsible by not getting yearly physicals and blood panels. If it’s just you then let ‘er buck if you want.
Thats good to hear that blood screening from physicals can catch some early cancer. Anyone know if a blood screening only catches some kinds of cancer? It seems pointless to shove a finger up the ass if a blood sample catches prostate cancer so I assume it doesn't.

I've always hated going to doctors but since I had kids (and with a push from my wife) I do yearly physicals now. I agree with others who have said dying early because you don't go get physicals is dumb when you have kids.

Had shingles.
No. You don’t want it!

They didn't catch the cancer from it, they saw some weird numbers on his blood panel that made them look at a bunch of other things and through a bunch more testing they led their way to it. But his doctor told him if he hadn't come in for the physical he probably wouldn't have known about the cancer until symptoms started and it might have been too late to take care of it.

I understand. The blood work let them to catching it.

The PSA test (prostate specific antigen) is a blood test that is an indicator. However, it's not ultra specific as a higher PSA can also be caused by benign enlarged prostate, so if your PSA is high, they might have to do a digital rectal exam.

I've known a few older folks who've gotten shingles and holy shit they were miserable. After seeing that, once I'm supposed to start getting that shot you can bet your ass I'm going to be at the clinic when the door opens for the day.

My father-in-law nearly lost sight in one of his eyes. He was planning on getting the shingles vax, too, he was just putting off for a bit. He put it off a bit too long.

I believe you should get the Shingles shot as soon as possible, any time of the year

SHINGRIX is a 2-dose vaccine series (0.5 mL each) administered as an injection into the muscle in the upper arm. It is important to complete the 2-dose series to help prevent shingles.

All anti vaccine folk who get the shingles should seriously reconsider their options

There is something called Common Sense

After seeing people with shingles I do NOT want it.

My sisters have had it and it is extremely irritating and painful to one degree or another

One of my coworkers had shingles and had lingering eye issues, as well as some neuralgia, which she said was awful.

I hustled my butt in to the MD office and got the two series Shingrix. As with most vaccines, the minor inconvenience of the vaccination pales in comparison to the actual disease. I would think my last comment would be an obvious one, but in Merika today there is a lot of disinformation.

RFK literally said "there is no vaccine that is safe and effective." Lots of other things that only a nutter could love.

That's the Ticket

Anything else is ignorance

So it sounds like the FDA is banning red dyes over the course of the next few years. So the question is, why are they late to the party compared to other countries? It's either they are less competent, or they didn't want to and finally succumbed to the pressure. Is either one of those answers good?

Had shingles when I was 34. It felt like road rash on the right half of my body, not exaggerating at all. Holy hell did it hurt, even before blisters started to show up. Couldn't stand to have my shirt touching the affected area. After I got rid of it, I would still have the burning sensation off and on for several years. My father-in-law had them at the same time. He waited to go to the doctor and they spread up to the side of his head. He was miserable for weeks. Also had the sensation for years after.

Had shingles in my 20’s.
Agree with everything you’re saying.

Large food companies just have too much pull at the FDA. That is one thing I strongly agree with RFK, Jr. about: not letting corporate interests dictate our food policies. It's just that many other vastly more qualified public health advocates have also been making that point for decades, so it is not like RFK, Jr. discovered this problem and is the first one to suggest trying to fix it.

But I will say this...RFK, Jr. being brought into the GOP-fold might make some things possible that were not previously. The reason things like banning red food dyes were not possible previously is because of the desire of the GOP to make these large corporations happy and to push back against most form of corporate oversight/regulation. Now that corporate regulation is all of a sudden cool in some GOP circles (certainly not all), there might be opportunities to reach consensus that were not there before.
