The Gophers are a Joke

Why wouldn't you go for two points there? Strange call by Brewster. Now they are down 11 with four minutes to go instead of a chance of being down 10.

They just extended his contract. And I doubt they can afford a buyout after using up so many resources for that new stadium. I don't think Brewster is going anywhere for a few years.

That extension was only a recruiting ploy and while all of us would like to see him stay the fan base has already turned on him. I attended the USC game last week and after the game the entire student section was chanting "Fire Brewster" alternated with "We hate Brewster". Add in the fact he is 0-9 in Trophy games 0-6 vs. Iowa and Wisconsin 1-2 vs. FCS schools his days are numbered.

They seriously don't belong in the Big Ten.

Growing up Northwestern was always the joke. But they at least were a very good academically. Since then they've been to the Rose Bowl and now again are a very solid football team.

I'm 35, and in my lifetime the only time Minnesota's been good at football or basketball was when they went to the final four and that got taken away since they were dirty cheaters and got caught.

I say kick them out and invite Waldorf or someone instead.

Does anyone know the history of how the once mighty Gophers fell, never to rise again? Made a bad coaching change and never recovered; or was it something else?

Yes, they just extended his contract but the buyout in the new contract is much less than the old one. The AD's contract is up at the end of the year and they have a new President. With their perennial NCAA tourney hockey team in shambles the last few years, Tubby's bringing more negativity to the basketball program than glory, plus Brewster's inability to produce anything on the football field... I don't think Brewster will be the only one to go.

Good point. I wasn't aware that his buyout is only $400,000 per year now(through 2013). Perhaps Minnesota could afford that, even though I still think they are strapped for cash. Not sure how much they could afford to spend on a new coach in the event Brewster was fired.

Sounds like a pretty classy student section they have there in Minny. :)

Almost feel bad for Brewster. Almost.

He's been unable to manage a team who now consist of his own recruits. He talked a big game, recruited some good players, got a new stadium.... and then what?

He had a bad first year, and that was understandable. It's a new coaching staff, new system, etc.

His next year, they started out hot, going 7-1 in the 'easy' part of their schedule, with a loss to #13 tOSU (who would go on to play in the NCG that season). People were excited and things looked great for the Gophers. But then they lost in the last second to Northwestern, followed by a bad loss to a bad Michigan team...and things unraveled after that, with losses to rivals Wisconsin and Iowa (55-0!). Then they lost the Insight Bowl.

And then there was last year. They had a tougher schedule and they got beat up in all their games against ranked teams. And then they lost their second straight Insight Bowl. To Iowa State.

Gophers are as inconsistent as ever, and they've likely downgraded from Mason, instead of upgrading as they had envisioned.

and to think this all started because the goophers were sick of going 7-5 every year and ending up in the gaylord hotels music city bowl so they fired Mason. careful what you wish for. They got alford'd.
