The Good son could be special!

Iowa football: BTN high on freshman RB Tyler Goodson

by Ryan Sikes1 day agoFollow @RoyalCub1

Big Ten Network is very high on Iowa football true freshman running back Tyler Goodson and indicates that he will see significant playing time.

For a freshman to get significant playing time in a Kirk Ferentz led Iowa football team, you know he has to be special. However, what can quickly end those hopes of making an impact is making mistakes in key situations (see Jonathan Parker in 2014).

That being said, Hawkeye fans should be really excited about Tyler Goodson, the former North Gwinnett High School standout.

The three-star running back came in ranked in as the 43rd best running back in the country but Big Ten Network’s Gerry DiNardosays he’s being disrespected with that ranking.

Mekhi Sargent and Toren Young figure to be the primary backs in Brian Ferentz’ offensive scheme but Goodson can certainly make his way into the conversation. Right now, Ivory Kelly-Martin looks to be the third-string running back but he faded down the stretch last season due to a combination of injuries and key mistakes (i.e. fumbling against Northwestern).

Henry Geil and Samson Evans were not listed on the 110-man fall camp rosterwhich, if history has indicated anything, indicates they are transferring out of the program. This leaves the door wide open for another young running back to step up in their place and no one should be surprised if Goodson plays in more than 4 games this season, forfeiting his redshirt.

Brandon Wegher was really the last true freshman Iowa running to have a huge impact, rushing for 641 yards and 8 touchdowns in 2009. Let’s just hope Tyler Goodson’s fate turns out a little better than Wegher’s.

I don’t know the origin of this article, but I don’t sense that Goodson is in line for much playing time this season based on what BF said Tuesday and I saw at Kids Day.

I get the sense that Iowa's practice was so different and controlled (due to injuries and Kirk's nature) that they don't have a lot to go on, and as such are just throwing stuff at the wall and hoping it sticks.

I’m not sure who the writer is. I think he may have a blog of some kind. I think the blog is called “Dear Old Gold” or something like that. I try to clean articles up and remove all adds before posting an article.

Here is a link. https://dearoldgold.com/

Who the hell is Ryan Sikes anyway? I agree with Rob's view. I'm not getting the sense he's going to jump on the scene that fast.

Everyone that watched his tape has been high on him. No news there. We all have high hopes of a bigger faster Wadley
As for the 4 games? I don't know. I won't say never, but if he goes beyond 4 games, either we had a bunch of attrition or he is the next Shonn Green.

Greene barely got a sniff as a freshman and he ended up being an absolute unit of a RB. Unless you've got a Maurice Clarett type of guy on your hands, it's pretty hard for even a really good freshman RB to be consistently better than an above average guy who is a little older.

I did hear some positive things about Goodson coming out of camp. With that said I have no feel for if he will be able to get any touches.

I do know we need improved play from our RBs whoever is getting the ball.

I believe (hope) that between Goodson and Tyrone Tracy you are looking at two skill type players that we really haven’t seen very much of at Iowa. Guys that have big play ability whenever they get their hands on the ball. I’m hoping BF finds ways to get Tracy 5-10 touches a game this year. I was hoping we would put in a jet sweep series for Goodson or find creative ways to get him a few touches but that may have to wait until next year.

I wonder about Goodson as a kick return guy. That is what IKM did as a true freshman. You know people will try to kick away from Smith-Marsette, so if we can get other guys back there (Goodson, Tracy, Roberts) with a bit of juice, it would be a good thing.

edit: of course, IKM is a great option as a second returner as well

I think I’d stick with ISM on KR. :)

Gotta have someone else back there for when they kick away from him. Last year it was DeVonte Young. This year, we will see, but we have some exciting options. That secondary guy goes need to be heady and physical, so it can be tough for a young guy. I would think IKM or Terry Roberts might be good bets.

Shonn Greene had significant playing time as a true freshman. I believe he got injured so then he didn’t play as much after that. It was evident immediately that he was going to be special.

Played 11 games as a freshman and had 37 carries and 10 games as a sophomore with 32 carries. Freshman year Young got most of the carries and sophomore year Young and Sims were the featured backs. That's my point, though. Young and Sims were above average guys, maybe Sims was right on average, but they were older and they were far more productive than underclassman Greene. Greene showed flashes, but the physicality of the game is such that it takes a very rare talent to be an impact freshman on a team with some decent upperclassmen at RB.

Interesting to see Kirk mention Goodson in his press conference and how he could see some playing time. Of course that’s because the kid simply doesn’t have any talent.
