The fine edge - hawks almost beat the champs

The hawks controlled MU for the first half, played tough to comeback in the second half, and were a razors edge from beating the eventual tourney champs. This hawkeye team can be much improved with better handles and fewer turnovers and improved defense. They are very close and I hope they can do it next year.

Man some people just won't give an inch. Iowa was close to beating the Big Champ, lost a close one to MState. Team's like Iowa don't reload, it takes time. My hope is players get better, a few new and healthy players play the way we think they can, and this year is a blip on the radar. If woes continue next year that's the time for evaluating Fran's job.

Sometimes you'll post something that makes me think you're a pretty bright lad, then you'll post something like this.

The bottom line is this team was God Fing Awful. They won 4 B1G game, that is Lickliter bad, there is no sugar coating it, and really no reason to even try to sugar coat it.

I just listened to Beilein on a BIG show interview. It was interesting how he stated he has completely stepped out of coaching the defense and solely concentrates on the fast break and the offense. He said he has learned over time that he just can't concentrate on both and do them both well at the same time. He admitted his brain just doesn't work like that. He stated he has designated defense soley to another individual/coach and he doesn't even look at it or instruct on it. He went on to say how this has benefited the offense even further because of all the attention he can give that.

Of course that helps when you have a Billy Donovon or other solid coaches on your sideline. Made me think of Iowa's and the coaching staff's struggles coaching defense at Iowa. Maybe hire that good defensive coach and put your confidence in that coach to handle the defense, like a defensive coordinator.

His interview was really a good listen if you can find a streamline of it.

I knew a thread like this was coming, the only question was would the OP be satire or straight.
My OP is straight. You know I have seen a lot of teams over the last 10-15 years who didnt have a great point guard use less dribbling and a three many weave with lots of screens to get guys wide open on the perimeter.

I have to admit I didnt watch much Iowa bball this year which is rare for me and the last time I did it was Lick's last year. I saw the last 10 minutes of the MSU game a couple weeks ago and both games in the tourney. The hawks will have the offense again I hope and as I said they need to clean up the turnovers and get just 10% better on defense.

I think they can do it whether they get a new defensive guru asst coach or what.

I am talking next year. If Cook stays he needs to cut down on his easy turnovers which are caused by what I see are his careless hands, they need to use their bodies better and rebound better, and of course the need to play better defense.

One play late in regulation in the last Mich game comes to mind. The first 3 pointer Mich made was when a hawk sagged way off that Duncan guy who was in the corner and sagged off for no reason except that the ball handler was coming off a high screen way out by the 3 pt line. Why leave your guy who is a good shooter wide open by 15 feet to stop the ball which is 30 feet from you.

That is needless help defense and not the best defense.

What say you and everyone about the defense the hawks play and how they can improve it.

Even if everyone comes back, Conner is healthy, and with adding Joe Weiskamp, this simply IS NOT a NCAA team. Or at least I just don't see it. Now if we get a good Grad Transfer guard, Joe comes in and is a 10+ PPG scorer, and Cook also comes back and is motivated to play D, then we could be a NCAA team. That is A LOT of ifs, and I just don't bank on that.

We almost beat Rutgers, too.

Oh wait. We lost by 16 to them.

I don't bank on all the ifs either. But I do use them as hope.

I don't think we will sniff the NCAA tourney next season either. I do fully expect JW to average over 10 points a game. Even 15 wouldn't surprise me. He is going to be a baller.
