The Evolution of Rick Stanzi

Nice article and breakdown of Ricky's growth as a QB at Iowa.

Iowa's passing game has steadily improved since the 2008 season and I wonder if addition of Coach Campbell to coaching staff has helped in anyway.

Who is this Stanzi you speak of?

Iowa's Rick Stanzi is a nice serviceable QB that takes care of the ball reasonably well. He has great difficulty throwing the long ball (rarely does) missing many more TD throws than he connects. He does not have a very strong arm and has a pretty slow release.

Rick is a quality guy. RS is a solidly average QB....no monster season ready to emerge

He's missed on a few deep balls this year, but that was his strongsuit for his first two years. It's always been the shorter passes that he struggled with. Not sure who you've been watching, but it ain't been Stanzi (unless you just started watching this year).

Agreed, deep ball is a strength

Sorry you're just flat wrong. Stanzi has thrown 14 passes targeted over 20 yards this season. He's hit on 9 out of 14. He's thrown 4 of his 10 TD's on deep balls and has a 21.93 YPA on deep balls. That is a great metric for a deep balls by any standard.

Read much? this article is not about Jake Christensen.

Only thing I would disagree with is when the ball is placed on either hash an he has to make the throw to the opposite side of the field..... the balls to the flat, the out patterns to the sidelines, there is still something still not quite right. Its more of a timing issue than arm strength issue.

Fortunately, at the next level you are not throwing from the hashes......not a big deal and he is playing well so i have no complaints.
