The elephant in the room

several articles and video comentators have been calling out Iowa's offense and more than that they've been pointing out facts around the number of targets the WRs get at Iowa. They're asking the question, that we only thought before. They ask, why would a good WR want to come to Iowa. They won't get game reps or development and little to no shot at NFL.

Its out there publicly now. The risks of KF's approach have gone beyond not winning and become reputational where recruiting is affected... maybe its been affected for a while but now its part of public discourse.

Oh I'm pretty sure coaches that have been recruiting against us for WRs have been saying and using this sort of thing against us for awhile now... It's snowballed and now it's damn near bottomed out.

Yeah I'm not sure how "it's out there publicly now". It's been common knowledge for quite some time and I think the nail was put in the coffin when we became Tight End U. now that we've become a pipeline for TE's to get into the league its become the focal point of our passing game which is great, but does us absolutely nothing in terms of bringing in quality WR's.

It's at a crossroads because how are they going to sell it to QB and WR recruits? It's out there now for two years and no improvement is gaining this season. How are you going to have an effective program/team if this becomes more of a recruiting challenge?

Well, it's been common knowledge to Iowa fans (bubble) but not the entire nation. Now it's being discussed nationally on sports talk radio, etc..

An era may be coming to an end. Age takes its toll. However, sometimes blood is thicker than water. Also people and organizations can become paralyzed by fear of the unknown. All good things must come to an end. Every dog has it’s day.

All cliches I guess, but sometimes truth can be found in them.

I would like to see us go 3-4 TEs on the field every play at this point and basically stop recruiting WRs unless we can find actual studs. Recruit two of the five best TEs every year, we'll lose one every other year due to him sucking or injury. Force the defense to cover the next George Kittle with a corner. Just try to outsize everyone. There's literally no point in Iowa rolling WRs on the field at this point. We can't get dudes that are going to outrun decent corners and even if we could the line couldn't block long enough for them to get downfield anyway.

Load up with TEs and make it so Iowa has a middling offense that can control the ball and is very hard to schematically gameplan for. A quick passing attack where some corner has to try to play press coverage on a dude like LaPorta is our only hope. If we ran that sort of offense that showcased guys projected as NFL TEs we would have our pick of the litter of recruits. "Bro, we throw the ball to TEs 25-30 times per game. You don't need to look anywhere else." Imagine if Iowa's offense consisted of a RB, FB, QB, and then Brock Bowers, Lachey and All were lined up wide with one of them in the slot. The mismatches and motion would drive DCs insane. I believe we could have five or six legitimately talented TEs on the roster at a time.

I would even go back to occasionally having the guy on the end of the line standing up just like Hayden did. That man could coach.

It goes without saying.

I agree and that would be fun to watch. Hell, they don't throw to the WR anyway and Iowa's best recruiting pitch is TE's. Also, the benefit of having 4 TE's and Hayden Large (TE at FB) to run a power run and pass offense would be legit, and to be honest fun as hell watch. I would enjoy watching the opposing team's D coordinator cringe at trying to prepare for Iowa or deal with that in the game. Very few teams would have the personnel to deal with trying to cover 3-5 TE's (Large coming out of the FB spot) every play. They'd be too quick for LB'ers and to large for most D-backs. It would be the start of the next evolution in college and Brian Frayorentz would be at the forefront of the entire evolution and looked upon as this offensive football savant. None of this chit going on now will ever be remembered in years later and Kirk's legacy will never be tainted and live on forever. The offense could be called "The Iowa Power Attack".

The only thing you stated that I may not agree with is that Kittle was not really Kittle until he got to San Fran, so I will leave it at that. But, I like the 3-4 TE sets every damn play. Defend that Harbaugh!

Great idea!

Imagine being a 6' 190lb CB lined up out wide against a 245lb TE blocking you out of bounds every play!

Yes, they would be too quick for LB'ers and too big for CB's. Then after the DC tries to match up with bigger players, you throw Kaleb Brown in the slot every once-in-awhile and have him burn downfield.

And...............one would think there would be a boost in the running game at 4.5-5 yrds a pop.

The title of this thread cracked me up. As if there is only one elephant in the room for Iowa football right now. Ha.....

Kaleb Brown
Seth Anderson
Diante Vines

Convincing these guys to stick around will be really hard. Would anyone blame them if they did decide to bolt at the end of the year.

Honestly and I wish I was joking when I said it, but I'd be shocked if they decided to stay.

I like it.
Also have the benefit of some really big guys blocking downfield on running plays.

Duzey, Fedorowicz and Kittle played great in that game in Columbus in 2013. They combined to keep us in that game. I know that Kittle improved dramatically in the league, but that dude could ball out at Iowa as well. You have to remember the kid was playing in the Greg Davis offense. Honestly, if Brian Ferentz had three TEs of that caliber at his disposal for 80% of snaps the offense would be insane.

Hear a fair question. Brain goes 10-2 falls short of the 25 point average, but we win the WEST but once again get clobbered in the B1G championship.

Each one of you is the AD. YOU MAKE THE CALL.!!!
