The core issue

I tend to agree with this take.

I suspect that if Brian/KF are allowed to stay at the helm and they change nothing over the next two years except the QB, this offense will be very good using the exact same system. Imagine the OL with two more years under their belt and Proctor folded into the mix. And with the young RBs we have. The schedule also turns more favorable.

But, with the natives this restless, the band may not get to stay together for the next couple years unless Barta can keep a leash on the boosters. Time will tell.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. And if KF does nothing, like I expect. Things will go back to Iowa Normal which is 17 points a game and 7-9 wins per year.

But the program will not advance. The depth of the conferrence will change when we add UCLA and USC. This rising tide will not float all boats. Iowa will now swim in deeper waters and less chance of missing the really good teams in a season. And this offense is not built to beat the better teams. Its a risky proposition to just think a ho hum offense and excellent defense will deliver anything close to a championship.

Please clarify what you consider to be a VERY GOOD OFFENSE. You mean by Kirk standards? Ranked 80th?

We haven’t had a top fifty in over twelve years.
By KF standards. Look, we are never going to have a highly ranked offense. We huddle, we run the ball, we control the clock and we play field position. We also play other poopy offenses in the West. That is what KF wants out of his offense. Its also why Phil Parker has such a straight path to being a great DC. Iowa shortens the game and plays field position ball. That makes coaching a defense a hell of a lot easier and coaching offense a lot harder.

I think next year if we can find a Nathan Stanley type QB we can have a pretty good offense given the OL we will have. But, yes, good is a relative term. Iowa just needs an average offense to be pretty dominant given the defense and specials.

I think the past several years we have seen KF's idea of a real football team. A couple of adjustments in his mind and the Hawks are back. My eyes don't tell me that, but one thing is clear. Never underestimate or over estimate KF.

I don't give a shit how good USC or UCLA is, if they have to play against an Iowa team with just a mediocre Iowa offense and a typical Iowa defense they will have a helluva time beating Iowa in Kinnick the last week of October or any time in November. The Big Ten is turning into an utter shit show. Ohio is the only elite team in the conference.

I wish I had a $ for every time in the last 10 years someone on this board said “our OL will be good next year”.

Ofer Stanford 16 ND 14 South Bend Indiana. Oct 14.

Stanford's other win? Colgate. On most days in late Oct/Nov, speed kills. On snow and ice.... not so much.

Extreme cold and wind negate speed quite a bit as well. It doesn't necessarily have to be snow or ice.

you are right. Can't help but think of that terrible QB in Green Bay. But my point is that this scenario doesn't happen very often. Can think of only a partial handful over the years that come to mind.

Memorial Stadium in IL always has wind it seems.

I wouldn't want to see Iowa playing Reggie Bush or the Stanford dude in any conditions.

Look, you're better off playing Reggie Bush in his first ever cold weather game than in 76 degree weather. I've seen Iowa pull so many games out of their ass late in the year with a weather assist it ain't even funny. That one game against Michigan is a prime example. Michigan was highly rated, Iowa hit a long pass out of halftime and then the defense forced a late fumble because it was so damned cold guys could barely hold the ball. Penn State in '08 was another example. Sash kept working that kid over the middle. Just hitting him in the ribs and finally dude was like "I've had enough" and got alligator arms, setting up a Greenwood INT that led to the winning kick. Iowa's defense is very, very, very good at subtle "cheap" shots in the cold that pay dividends late.

You are correct!

Or in the media... I bet if we look back at this off season we'll find that they were trying to sell that hard too... "The young guys all got experience and another yr in the weight room' yadda yadda. Well come to find out I just don't think they are all that good... Maybe that's what it is. Individually and most certainly as a unit they just can't figure it out. How that group won 10 games last yr is beyond me. How last yr happened will probably be a mystery to me. But this yr no. This yr it's as obvious as it gets.
