The Breakdown: Michigan State Wears Down Hawkeyes

Rob, better days are ahead for JB, but I do think MSU had a lot to do with his performance. Now way and Izzo coached team is going to let a point guard with no real threat to drive stand out front and shoot threes. He also had only 1 assist. It is not hard for a well coached team to shut down such a PG. It did not surprise me that Williams had a better game. He is faster and more athletic and is threat to the hoop.

Wisky will do the same thing. Wisky and MSU are 2 teams that can shut down Iowas run game and force a 1/2 game which is the way to beat Iowa.

I don't agree with this post at all. If Bohannon and Jok shot 35% from wide open 3, it's an even game late. That's a bad percentage for wide open shots.

Those frickin refs from the Minnesota game cost us these 2 games. We should have won in regulation and would have been better off losing in it. Those overtimes helped wear our legs out in this game. Fresh legs and I would have liked our chances in pulling this game out. I think we'll give Illinois a similar ass kicking they gave us at their place. They won't hit all those 3's at our place Hope we can get 9-9 . I think this team would be better served playing in the NIT this year anyway.

I just want a prolonged season to help get through winter at this point.

When Jok and Bohannon go two for twenty, it isn't likely Iowa will win. If they didn't have the double overtime at Minnesota its possible they would of done a lot better.

You are entitled to an opinion. Great coaches take shooters out of their game. Jock can handle himself if healthy and complemented on the court. Pg play is easier to stop if not multi dimensional.
Wisky and MSU are top notch defenses.

The problem is it wasnt close late. Seriously, instead of watching the ball when those 2 shoot watch how both teams will close them out. Completely disrups the follow through ans landing. They also do or will close down JBs passing lanes daring him to go to the hoop.

Your entitled to your opinion too. Maybe they will play each other in the tournament.

It's a good thing Iowa has not faced any well-coached teams with great coaches who have figured out a way to shut down a one-dimensional PG -- that is until February 11 vs. Izzo.

I fully think Iowa can beat MSU. Several teams will more resdily expose the lack of a pont guard getting to the rim. MSU is one. It creates issues. Note that Iow had only guards with offensive rebounds amoung starters. That is directly related. MSU didnt have foul trouble among starters again directly related. I like JB and he should have a role. Winning championships will be very difficult with JB at point. Very difficult to run half court against solid teams.

I blame Bohannon's bad game on Fran's decision to sit him the whole first half. He missed way too many open shots to blame the defense. Especially since he is plenty good at making contested shots.

I will also add rebounding and defense. We're we out rebounded by like 15-20 boards? Aggressive defense by MSU, or any other team, exposes a lot of teams weaknesses...

Some interesting takes from you guys that I enjoyed reading. There were plenty of things that went wrong in the second half.

MSU figured out the press by throwing the ball across the court to the opposite of the pressure and it helped create easier scoring opportunities. And during the stretch when it took control, it took care of the basketball. Sparty also killed us on the glass. They did what they do better than we did what we do.

I will say, our best offense was when Jok figured out that they were doubling him and he found the bigs for easy baskets at the rim. I think had Bohannon gotten into a flow during this game, he could have delivered some dimes as well. He's done it all season.

Here is something that I don't understand. We usually pride ourselves on depth, and play 10-11 players a game. Why is it then that we have games like this where it seems like there is a hangover? Other teams can't/don't play 10-11 guys and are able to rebound quickly and yet this is the 3rd game this year where we had a previous exhausting game and come out with little to no energy....

Rob I thought the refs said a couple years ago that they were going to call fouls for hand checking and guarding to close. We all know how coach Izzo has his guys defend to force the refs to make the calls and they do it real well.

It's hard to keep up with the officials' points of emphasis. I never liked that approach anyway. The rules are the rules. Just call them as such.

I will say that the traveling call in college is starting to resemble the NBA more and more. I noticed it at the Iowa women's game the other night as well. Traveling isn't called near enough.

Being out rebounded was a by product of Iowa missing way more shots than MSU did.

Two reasons why Iowa lost yesterday.

1 - Shot 33% from the field
2 - Made only 4 three pointers in 21 attempts.

As Fran said in his post-game press conference, Iowa needed to go get more offensive rebounds with its poor shooting. It didn't. Rebounding was a sizable factor.

It happens to other teams too. It's really common in basketball to have nights with no energy. This one was easy to see coming. Not many teams would have won last night in that situation.
