Gopher here. Who hates Iowa, We hate Iowa. Now that I have that out of the way, I saw an article that really hit home concerning the worst teams in FBS Power 5.

The Gophers and Hawkeyes play several of these teams and it leads me to think that both our teams are in similar places and we could both very well be awful. Hear me out!

The worst (12) FBS Power 5 teams:
12. Vandy
11. UVA
10. Rutgers
9. MY
8. CO
7. Cal
6. Purdue
5. Illinois
4. Syracuse
3. Oregon State
2. ISU
1. Kansas

With that said, my Gophers play 5 of the worst 12 in 2016, plus a weak FCS (Indiana St.) and a crappy MW team (Col St.) So, the Gophers should have 7 wins. Playing the worst power 5 and weak FCS/MW just builds false confidence. Maybe we have a fighting chance against Nebby, NW, Wi, Iowa. Already lost to failing Penn St.

Along those same lines, Iowa plays 4 of the worst 12, plus a horrible MAC (Mi-OH) and the best FCS team (NDSU). We learned our lesson a few years ago not to play the Bison. At any rate, that should be 6 wins. However, it's just false confidence. 2015 told the same story for Iowa. Of the past 19 games Iowa has played (14 in 2015 and 5 in 2016) 11 of the teams have had losing records. When the Hawks play teams with winning records (Stanford ,MichSt, NDSU) they typically lose. Wins against Illinois St (FCS), NW, Wisconsin (10-6) and Pitt (27-24 last second FG).

Sorry for the bad news. Saturday, its the battle of the pretenders!

Well, let me get this out of the way also - we hate your guts, too. My wife and I will not vacation in Minnesota - only Wisconsin. Wouldn't spend a dime in your gopherdom..
But there are many Iowans who vacation, fish, whatever in Minnesota. You should consider that before you decide you hate Iowa so much..

Welcome to the forum Gopher. I have a question before we move forward. Is the "WE HATE..." reserved exclusively for Iowa. Please tell me that we have special status. I'd be disapoint if WE HATE is used for everyone.

Curious, but why do the MInnys hate us so much? Is it because we typically pound the gophers into the ground most years (at least in the modern era). All I can say, when wifey and I went to the last game up there, Minny fans were extremely rude to us. We had Minny fans kneeing us in the back in our seats. At our hotel stays, we almost always ran into a gopher fan with something negative to say.

All I can figure is it must be another little brother thing. Maybe that pig.

I always get a chuckle outa Goofers. They brag about how much they hate Iowa. The look on their faces when I tell them that no one in Iowa even gives mn a second thought is always priceless. :p:D:cool:

Its a little bro thing. We lead 23-13 since 1980. And if Iowa had done their job in 2010 and 2011 instead of embarassing themselves, it would be even more lopsided.

Gophs don't like getting beat by the Hawks all the time, so they came up with some dumb chant.

In my experience, living there for five years, it was only ever used for Iowa.

Are you talking about Floyd or the guys wife? :D

Actually, this is a great post. He makes a terrific point about strength of schedule.

The Minnesota-Iowa game is special. It is a great rivalry. Minnesota people are terrific. So are Iowans. Two great States, who love to poke fun at each other.

It will be another terrific game Saturday. The winner will be in the hunt for a bowl game. The loser? Watch out

Firstly, I attended UMinn, but chose to live in Iowa. So, that should tell you something. I pull for the Hawks when they aren't playing the Gophers.

Hate is a strong word. It's more about trying to make the rivalry with the Hawks bigger. Once it caught on a few years ago (The "Who hates" chant) then it became tradition. And, yes, the stadium chants it every home game regardless of if we are playing the Hawks at the time or not. Gotta admit, it helps the rivalry and agree, the primary reason for hate is that the Hawks have owned the game for the most part.

All that said, wish you all would have read past my first paragraph. The point was MINNESOTA and IOWA have very weak schedules (playing the worst teams in power 5, sprinkled with MAC and FCS). Both programs have built false confidence recently and both are at a cross roads. This is a huge game fellas! MN 31 - IOWA 28

I agree. I didn't take it as flaming or trolling. It's the facts and he merely points it out for BOTH teams, not just Iowa.

I did not take this as trolling at all, great points in the article... I'm the opposite, lived in Iowa my whole life and currently reside in Minnesota. My take on the rivalry is simple, Minnesota "Hates" Iowa so bad because truth be told they want to be Iowa in the worst way. I know right now the Hawks are on a downward spiral, but the modern day success Iowa has had is better than anything Minnesota has had in the past 30+ years. I still hear how great the 8-5 team with Maxx Williams was weekly around here. Sad really, could be a fun weekend with great tailgating... Instead the Squirrels and their passive aggressive fan base choose to ruin it. They were awful in Kinnick last year and expect more of the same in TCF this weekend.

LurkinGopher you seem like a good dude... Good luck to you this weekend.

GO HAWKS!

It's not just chanted during Iowa games, they consistently chant it while playing other teams like during the Minny vs Wisky game. Kind of funny when think about it.
That's not he meant. He was asking: do they say "Who hates [blank]? We hate [blank]!" where [blank] is teams other than Iowa. I do not believe they do.
